ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — A Roanoke, Va., man and his wife were recovering after he accidentally shot himself and her during a firearms safety class.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that Michael L. Deel shot himself in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun. The bullet also struck his wife, Michelle, in the leg as she was sitting beside him.

The incident occurred Saturday during a firearms safety class at a residence. The instructor, Thomas Starke, told police he'd left the room and then heard a shot.

The Deels were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Michael Deel says the shooting was a "stupid accident."

There should not have been any firearms in the "class room". So I would say the instructor played a role in this accident.

There shouldn't have been any LOADED firearms in the classroom.

I just hope that the couple will continue their endeavor to own firearms and not let this accident scare them away from guns forever.

This is the kind of stuff that Anti's are made from. Hopefully they understand what happened and dont somehow let their brains convince them that it was somehow the gun's fault.

I wish for them a full recovery and a completely ingrained lesson to never again allow such a thing to happen.

If mankind had quit every time an accident happened we would not have much going on in this world like we do now.

When I took it every person had a gun. And we did not touch it in the classroom, it was for the shooting test afterwards.

Kinda like kindergarten.... cannot leave the room for 10 seconds without something dumb happening.

I am not sure exaclty what kind of class this was. If it was testing for HCP the students should not have any weapons in the classroom. There are people in those classes that have never even shot a pistol. You should assume the entire class is ignorant and wait until one passes the written and moves on to the shooting before letting students retreive their weapon. I know I would not want to be in a room full of strangers with weapons without knowing they can handle a pistol responsibly.

When I took my HCP course we had our weapons in the room, but all ammunition was to be placed outside the room. That was the very first thing we did as the class was beginning, per the instructor's instructions.

I totally "get" the spirit of your comments. I agree for the most part, but this is the kind of arguments the anti-2A crowd used when the Restaurant Carry bill was being debated. When I go shopping, out to eat, or to get my oil changed I suspect there are strangers with weapons that may not be as responsible as myself. God knows that class isn't gonna change them much.

I am new here and you will find that i "shoot from the hip" (pun intended). We are talking about a contolled enviroment here. I do not think anyone will be playing with thier weapons while standing in line at McD's. There are idiots like that guy that was showing his gun off at church and acidently killed a little girl. As long as people like that exist (and they always will). Our 2A rights are always going to be in jeopardy.

The class I took changed my whole world. I understand the great responsibility of being able to carry and I am constantly reading/learning everything that i need to know in order to be responsable HCP holder. I am 100% sure there are people carring leagally that have no buisiness having a gun. I can not control that. I think we all know these classes have a high if not 100% passing rate. I know I do alot of eduacting and correcting of misinformation since I got my HCP.

It is just sad that we need a peice of paper or a person with power to give us permission to protect our own personal life.

Side note: Our oldest daughter was sworn into the navy a few days ago. The first line is

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

As a citizen I should have the same comitment to this country without being connected to the military. As a citizen who supports and defends the constitution how in the world could ANYONE tell me I can not have a gun anywhere, anytime. (That sounds like Illinois)

I will be glad when/if this country get its balls back. Sorry i am ranting now :)
