Extension of Jobless benefits passes in opposition to Republicans

Voted on half an hour ago. It would surprise me if this doesn't pass the House. Complete win-win for the Democrats and a lose-lose for the Republicans. The President will speak soon on unemployment to put pressure on the House. 

 

I have no problem with people being able to eat and pay their bills in this "lack of" jobs climate. What interests me though is:

 

* There is no funding for this extension. Where is that coming from?

 

* The President talks about his continuing job growth and how many people "HE" has put back to work. If that is the case why does HE need to get unemployment benefits extended?

 

I think I might have it figured out. The President wants unemployment benefits extended "just in case" bad Conservatives get elected in November and cause his great economic expansion to fail, it doesn't need to be funded because, thanks to Obama the Almighty, everyone is working.

 

Yeaaaa...thats the ticket.

Called the "Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program". Been raised 11 times since 2008. House will vote yes on this. I think the Republicans game plan is to take on action that Dems. could use against them in Nov. Problem with this strategy is they will lose more votes than they gain.

You can't be on unemployment "for years". A year and 3 months is max from any state, and that's only 2 or 3, and that includes the federal extension under debate here. Then in most states you have to have worked x amount of time in last 4 or 5 quarters or have paid x amount into the fund from wages.

 

Years ago, you could work 6 months and be on unemployment for six months year after year, and a lot of seasonal workers did just that, but that got zapped years ago.

All but three states max out at 63 weeks, three go to 73. And that's with all state plus federal EUC and EB bennies combined (state bennies are almost all only 26 weeks).

 

Reason that totals vary in different states is because not everyone in all states gets the full duration of EUC, btw.
