Personally, I went this route.

I had never heard of misch metal before seeing it here, but that video pretty darn well convinced me of its utility. Anywise, the lanyard rides around on my knife, and I never really notice it is there. Not being a smoker, I would have no use for a lighter, so this falls in the nice middle ground. As for things to light... working on that, though I understand white-petroleum-soaked cotton balls make good tinder (and fit well in a cute little key-chain-mounted cylinder I just got).

Linoge, shame on you!

Always have a way to make fire and a cutting tool handy. Boy Scout law, I think... You don't have to be a smoker to need a lighter. Besides, what're you gonna do when Angelina Jolie comes up to you and wants to bum a light? :stare:

An old-timer showed my dad this trick when I was a kid and I've been starting campfires ever since. Take a soda can and cut it in half. Then take the bottom half of the can and fill it halfway with gasoline, or campfuel. Put it in the fire pit and stack kindling around it, and some smaller logs around that. Light up the gas with a long match or a lit stick. The gas will catch on fire, but will not explode or flare up. You'll get a nice 6" flame that will burn for 10-15 minutes. Works great if your wood is a little wet.
