  1. thanks for the replies....I am still learning about this pistol reloading (guess that never stops). The Winchester book did not give barrel length or COL. But since I was in the middle of their data thought I was being plenty safe....the velocities just threw me and made me wonder. Of course the temp was in the mid 80's as well which has a bearing. I was amazed at the SD as well......so I quit early .
  2. 124 gr. Montana Gold HP - 5.0gr. WSF - COL 1.130 - Fed Match SPP Gun S&W M&P Pro 5" bbl. (powder measurement verified with bal.beam and digital scale) My Winchester book notes 4.7 to 5.3 velocity 1015 - 1115, 6 shot string Avg.1240, spread 5.83, SD 2.0 1237, 1241, 1239, 1238, 1239,1243 No abnormal cartridge signs. Do I hold what I have or should I lighten up a little bit. Recoil does not seem heavy and accuracy is better than factory RN. Thanks
  3. 230 gr RN....that's what they are designed for and cheaper than anything else unless you reload. If the SHTF, grab your shotgun or rifle.

    1911's

I have a Remington R1 that I like a whole lot better than a Colt CC, 70 series. If I hadn't had it so long I would get rid of it..but just can't. Looking to get a Sig 1911 soon.
  5. I am loading a Delta Precision and Montana Gold 124 gr JHP. This is for range use, IDPA, etc. Also shooting in S&W M&P. I would like to find out what OAL others are using for this bullet. Thanks
  6. Glad you went. More people need to do so. Like you, shot all my life, but until you expose yourself to a formal training program, you just don't know what you don't know. You can repeat the same course every year and still pick up something.
  7. Great memories.....sorry for your loss, but happy for your experiences.......it's all part of growing up, and I don't like it.
  8. AND........if people shot as frequently as they drove, it would be a lot different. In the good ol' days, firearms were a necessity of life. Whether for hunting or protection from critters or two-legged predators, they were an everyday tool. Heck, growing up, it was a rare day I didn't shoot a BBgun, sling-shot, firecrakers or a regular gun in the backyard.....inside the city no less. It is a different world now, and firearms are rare items to most, therefore they have not grown up and learned to use them.....or suffer the consequences of improper use. Most who have taken the HCP class are either a. Unconsciously Incompetent= they don't know what they just don't know. or b. Consciously Incompetent= they realize they have some short-comings but live with it and don't bother to train; they feel they are good enough. Unfortunatelly for some, they don't find that out until it is too late.

  10. Thanks all. Ordered the DCAEK and RAM from Cheaper Than Dirt. All plus shipping right at $100. With video, believe I can get it fixed up. Will report later.
  11. The HCP is similar to taking your driver's test. It does not mean proficiency; you have met a minimal requirement (didn't wreck=didn't shoot someone) Both give you the state's blessing to handle something that can get you in serious trouble, or worse......and you gave them $$. The problem is too many people think this means competency. I am a big advocate of additional training. You owe it to yourself and others, especially if you are going to carry outside the home.
  12. OK, I put the RAM in my standard M&P and it did improve the reset. But I'm no 'smith. I want a trigger as close to a 1911 with 4-5 #pull, which it is close to now. I want a good reset and no grit in the slack take up. Anyone had this done by a gunsmith you would recommend?
  13. Have a Pro. Lousy trigger. Anyone had a trigger job done, and if so, who, where and are you happy with it.
  14. Have 2 M&Ps, both in 9mm. 2 XDs, one in 9, one in 45. The MPs are my favorite, and super guns if you have a pro trigger job done. The triggers are better out of the box on the XD, but to me MPs still get the nod.
  15. Yep, same thing here. Have a series 70 Colt Combat Commander. I had trijicon sights and Colt put an extended grip safety on, but still not ringing my bell. Just sits in the safe. Been thinking about selling it.......but then again not since I've had it forever. Think I would shoot a Sig 1911 a lot more than this gun.
  16. I think it will all go back to your training. There is a saying that one will only be 50% as good as your skill level, and that you can't miss fast enough to get good hits. At close range, <7yds, just putting the front sight on the target should give you a hit. More distance= more time needed to align your sight picture/sights. One can read numerous accounts of multiple shots being fired at close range and nobody gets a scratch. No doubt these shooters had a) very low skill level to start with or thought point shooting was good enough.
  17. Go ahead and start with a barrel tumbler and stainless steel media. You won't be sorry and your rounds will look like new.
  18. Something to think about. 230gr.FMJ is more likely to over penetrate and shoot through. So my big reason to shoot expanding ammo is to avoid shoot through and injury to someone else. This is true for all calibers.

    CZ P07 .40 Rocks!

Yep, I was there when it laid down......real bummer, but he did make the Glock look good. He shot Graduate Level for his first trip out. If he had his CZ probably would have been head-of-the-class.
  21. Drying is no big deal. Put the tennis shoe rack inside the clothers dryer and place the brass on a cookie sheet or similar item. 30 mins and they're dry.
  22. I have a law firm's '800' number on my speed dial...answered 24/7. I will call them right after calling 911. I will be cooperative with the police, give them the minimum but truthful info unless advised otherwise. One of the issues, especially in a time of stress, is saying way too much. The police are also under stress. Can you be sure at any hearing or trial that their recall will accurately convey what you said? What you don't say can't be used against you.
  23. A10, just another discussion on a forum....not a you against me sort of thing. I actually do 'all of the above'. Avoid some places that are posted. Honor the signs most of the time. But like ab, sometimes I evaluate the risk vs. benefit. TMF had me there for a moment on 'rightful assembly', but I go back to the point that doing so does infringe on others' rights, peace and quiet and does actively annoy others in a private property setting......different than being on the sidewalk. If I CC, no one knows, doesn't offend or frighten, and yes if asked to leave I would do so without protest.
  24. wd, I simply have the viewpoint of 1point and ab in that public establishments say come on in, we are open to the public. That is different than a workplace, your home, or your farm. I do not have the constitutional right to hunt or fish or run across your property. Your property rights are the trump in that case. I have read the 2nd Adm., not really that hard or that long....in fact, it is much more brief than this post......
