Honestly I would rather sit at home than ever hunt with a 30/30 again... It seems as soon as you take to the field with one a 12 pointer will mock you from 200 yards. Having used to own a large piece of land and letting many friends hunt on it, I can say with all sincerity I have never trailed and tracked more wounded deer than any other calibers combined. My suggestion is any of the cartridges based off of the 308, that would include the 243, 260 rem 7mm-08 and 308. Another caliber to look at would be 25-06 the recoil felt off of the lighter grain bullets isn't bad. The 243 and 260 have great knock down for the felt recoil, and if range is ever needed its very capable (would take the 260 out to 1000 yards over a 308 any day). My son shot my 243 when he was 7... He shoots my 260 and 308 now at 13. The 260 if you don't reload I wouldn't recommend. The 7mm-08 I have never been a fan of, just never had one that suited me, although its a fine cartridge. The cartridges based off of the .308 are also inherently very accurate.

That's my dpms ar in 260 rem the 308 shoots just as good. That's 4 shots at less than .2" 100 yards. I have several friends with same rifle in varying setups in .308 6.5 creed more and .260 they all get similar results. I love the m1a mine though cost $500 more and it's groups we're 2" bigger.
-
Fwiw my dpms in .308 is as accurate as my Remington 700 tactical in .308..... M1a is nice for nostalgia purposes but hard to compete with the AR platform. Take the extra cash and put it towards some glass.

I have a rra predator pursuit that was special ordered in 18" it shoots one ragged hole at 100m. Still not a big rra fan for other reasons, but for a complete system it's hard to beat. I have a model one spr shaw 18" it easily prints .5 moa don't care much for 1/9 twist though. Over 62gr and the groups start to open up. The predator pursuit is 1/8 twist wilson barrel and somehow will shoot anything from 50gr to 77gr. If I was building my own I would use a Lothar-walther barrel (gunbroker $300ish) or a ranier arms barrel.

I have a friend with a 516 and it's pretty nice, still not a fan of a piston AR. If I had to have a piston rifle that would be my choice I guess....

One of the stores is right off of I-26, been to it many times.

It is what it is... It's a cheap hunting grade bolt gun and it should serve your son very well. It's competition is the Remington 770 and the Savage Axis, and imo I would pick it over the other two. I honestly have thought about doing this same thing for my 13 year old, unfortunately he is already started to develop some gun snobbery lol..... (little more money and the Howa is also a pretty decent option, great trigger, better stock and out of the box pretty accurate).

I enjoyed my time with my SOCOM 16, I see no reason to pick one over any of the AR platforms though unless you just prefer that platform. Mags are pricier, to get close to AR accuracy is difficult and costly, if you dont regularly maintain your weapon then the M1A platform may have a advantage, most of the AR's while they cant agree on parts most are still very readily available. If I was going to go down that road I would definetly go the SOCOM16 route though.

Dpms lr-308 (Remington r25 is same rifle with camo) I just picked up the lr-308 upper and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, if it shoots half as good as my 260 then I will be pleased (consistently less than .5 MOA). If you are looking more for a battle rifle then look into the SASS model. Fwiw I got my rifle with both uppers around your price point, quality fit and finish I am very pleased. That's 4 shots 100yds less than .2"

I have never had an issue with PSA, bought tons of crap there both online and in person.

I have purchased several trade ins from summit and always came out better than i thought I would. Been to buds store in Lexington and was impressed with a couple of sales people but just as many weren't exactly knowledgable or helpful for that matter.

Very nice looking rifle, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

We need to get all of the TN dpms 308 owners to go in and get a statewide community wrench to ship around when needed lol

That's a four shot group (didn't have enough rounds for five...that's a .136" group) from my less than mil spec DPMS 260 rem . It also gave a coyote another earhole this past week from a shade over 375 yards lol. 260 Rem (Winchester 243 brass) 140gr AmaX hornady 39gr IMR 4831 2.78" oal Buy the dpms don't look back.

DPMS makes a lr308 with a 24" stainless barrel, it weighs a ton but shoots like a demon. I have seen them online at times for $1100 ish.

My DD m4v4 is quite possibly the perfect out of the box ar (for me...). The build quality is very high, if you are looking for an ar to buy and be done its very nice. I have a Colt 6920 also, mine is a fine rifle (I will admit it had a gas block issue with it that made it not like cheap ammo such as silver bear very much...) if I was paying the money for the colt I would just buy the DD. IMO the build quality on the colt isn't any better than the smith. With all of this said, my s&w is more accurate than all of my other ar's (not including my 260 rem lol). The darn thing is almost as accurate as my Remington 700 sps tactical. And with that said accuracy at least for me is not the end all be all of this type of rifle (unless I have set it up to be a bench gun..), by the time you add a rail, upper receiver with fa and cover, and etc... You are pretty much at the price of the DD or a BCM. At least with the smith you can add on a little at a time or pick and choose the upgrades.

I have several AR's including an MP sport. The smith is a great gun, reliable, more accurate than my DD M4V4....

I had the sig and wish I had kept it, lots of fun and a good shooter. Mine succombed to a 10/22 obsession......

DPMS/Bushmaster/Remington/CMMG Knight's and most everyone other than Armalite and Rock River use the same magazine. Magpul makes a magazine for the Knight's pattern. The DPMS is actually a very nice rifle to start building off of, I have one that is chambered for 260REM, it being a cheapo DPMS still turned in a slightly less than .3" 100yard 5 shot group this weekend (better than all of my bolt guns consistently....). DPMS may have had hiccups with their AR15's but the LR308's that I have ran across have all tended to be very good shooters. The Armalite is the alternative, they use their own magazines, some parts between the two are interchangeable but its not like you can take an upper from an Armalite and stick it on a DPMS. I had one in .308 it shot lights out, expensive mags and expensive kids forced me to sell it.... The Rock River is the version of a failed Bushmaster (pre Freedom Group) design that they improved upon and supposedly corrected, it uses a FAL magazine and as a bonus has the RR 2 stage trigger and an ambidextrous mag release. It has proprietary parts and would be my last choice personally...

For the money for a .308 846 is hard to beat in my book. I keep a jug of it for my SHTF, I see a little larger group size than with Varget (.4ish vs .7ish); the difference is negligible is real world situations. In fairness to 846 I really never explored many more bullets than the 168's so it may tighten up with other bullet choices... Rifle is Remington 700 SPS Tact. AAC .308

I made a purchase this past week it was $1500+ local and $999 online... sometimes it's a no brainer. I always try to support the local economy and like others have said I always take the price to the dealer and see if he can come close. Let common sense rein though, a couple hundred bucks is a couple hundred bucks....

Glocks are not a firearm to sit back and gaze at, they are a tool meant to be used. As long as the grip works for you (for instance I personally cant shoot a XD, feels like I am holding a cheap drill...). My Glock 21C shoots more accurate and more reliably than any 1911 I have ever owned or shot (and I own and have shot quite a few in my days). My glock 19 is great cheap fun, my Glock 36 is probably the perfect carry gun (at least for me...). I have deer hunted with a Glock 20 its accurate, reliable and basically a hand held freight train.

Rock River Arms heartburn...
trevorst replied to Troutburger's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Last two RRA rifles I had the gas key on both looked like it had been "staked..." with a noodle. An acquaintance of mines started having bad issues after about 100 rounds and his gas key could be wobbled from where the screws had backed out. I am pretty fond of their NM trigger but they can keep the rest. Way too many makers that are cheaper and put out quality products with customer service to even consider them. -
I had the exact same problem, pierce extensions fixed mine. Had a few issues with JHP's that I blame on break in. It will eat anything I feed it now.

I have a 21c and a 36. Both are incredible, the 21c is easily the most accurate and reliable .45 I have ever owned and I have had some pretty nice 1911's. Me and the 36 had some growing pains but now it's my go to carry gun.
