1. posted by tbone: " This should be a question of school safety. Why are schools not treated like airports or federal court houses or other judicial buildings? None of these mass shooters ever go to a "hardened" target. Schools become targets because they are easy. What can we do to change that?"   1. This has been tried. Time involved (you obviously have never seen 300 "Little People" hit the door in a 15 minute time span) means that you would get no teaching done. 2. Perp in this case busted into school past security measures. He would have just breezed through metal detector. 3. Slow down traffic and some students will use chance to skip or go play. 4. Parents don't like search procedures for themselves and over ride by coming in through another entrance, BG will do same. Forget the "parents will do what you want because they want security for their kids argument. Parents revert to "little people" mentality as soon as they enter school grounds (they don't like school authorities). Yes, I am sure that the parents at this school no longer feel that way, a little too late.   (I am retired teacher btw, both Elementary and High School)
2. With all the talk of “Gun Law Dialogue” the media has completely missed an important point. Connecticut already has in place all of the provisions being discussed . Purchase permits, involving screening by local, state and federal agencies is already the law. Gun show dealers have to obtain background checks. Pistol purchase permits are required  at gun shows.  There is already a federal law prohibiting the purchase of handguns out of state. There is already  a federal law prohibiting the purchase or ownership of a handgun by anyone under twenty one years of age (shooter was twenty years old). There is already a Federal law and a state law prohibiting firearms on school grounds or in school buildings.   Everything that the media says they want done, was already done. The laws were in effect in Connecticut at the time of this shooting. Gun Control was already the law of the land in Connecticut.   All of these laws, already in force, did not stop the death of twenty small children and 6 adults. This incident is not a “cry for change” as the press is bugling over the airways. We should be looking at gun control as having been accomplished and yet did not stop the violence. Ergo, we have something else that is the problem. There seems to have been no long history of mental health problems that could have flagged this killer. A twenty year old is going to be able to over ride any security measures to secure the weapons from his grasp. It is entirely possible that there was nothing that anybody could have done to prevent this tragedy.   The only person I see that could possibly have stopped this was his mother and she is dead so we can't ask her.
3. Before we start blaming the voting public, remember how the selection process for candidates runs. We have little if any part in picking the candidates. Long before the candidates get to the primaries or to the ballots, others ( political PACs and other special interest groups) have already picked who will run. Since we don't pick the candidates, we have fallen into voting by party affiliation alone. We do this partly because we want the illusion that we actually have a choice when we vote. I did not feel comfortable with a single name,Democrat or Republican, National, county or State, on the ballot this time. But those were the only choices available to me.
4. The level of economics required to understand Federal financing would entail about 4 Semesters of College Level Economics and probably some Graduate Level courses to be safe. ECON 101 wouldn’t give you the foggiest notion of national economics. This is one big reason that our Representatives and Senators are botching things up so bad. They don’t possess the level of Economics education necessary to actually make the tax money work. They listen to know-nothing special interest lobbyists and academics that subscribe to just one school of economics (either Free market or Keynesian) neither of which has worked by itself in the last century. I have a Master’s Degree (in Education) but as of right now I have read at least 30 books on Economics (have 65 on the Kindle, 35 more to go!) To be totally honest, I still don’t understand Federal Spending! It does us no good to know Economics when the people who run our government obviously don’t even understand how a checking account works ( Government version: write lots of checks but don’t worry about making deposits!) State and County Economics could be taught in High School but Federal Economics are beyond any system of teaching. There is no system, just snatch and run for your own interests.
5. Tennessee secedes. 1. TVA is dismantled (Federal Property) and electric power is cut off. Tennessee will have to build an all new Electric power infrastructure. 2. All Federal support to Tennessee institutions will be stopped. Tennessee goes to 65% Income Tax to fund said institutions. 3. All protection from U.S. Constitution is voided. Tennessee Constitution applies only to Tennessee. Visit relatives in Alabama and go to Guantanamo, you have no rights so shut up and eat your moldy bread. 4. Other states no longer recognize TN vehicle and operator licences or HCPs. 2nd Amendment no longer applies to TN citizens, you are illegal immigrants. Guantanamo. 5. Interstate commerce into and out of TN (a foreign country) subject to tariffs. 6. No postal service. Biggest problem. You don't petition for succession. You fire on Fort Campbell and declare independence from U.S. Entire U.S. military might legally invades Tennessee. Still sound like a good deal? Fact is, like it or not, states are no longer capable of existing as separate entities.
6. I edc what I believe to be the most underrated pocket tool in the world. As I carry a gun for defense, I carry a knife as a tool. I carry a Swiss Army Knife (SWAK), No, not the plastic handled, bulky and weighty knife most know as the SWAK, but the slender, slim and lightweight real SWAK. The knife I carry is the exact replica of the one that was really issued to Swiss troops in the past. The knife was actually designed as a tool for maintaining the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin rifle. What better to edc than a gun maintenance tool? Originally manufactured by Wegner , it still is built by them as the Original Swiss Army Knife. It is also manufactured under the Victorinox name (both companies are actually now owned by Victorinox) as the Pioneer. Victorinox also makes a smaller, lighter version, the Cadet, with a nail file replacing the awl. Scales (handles) are made of riveted Aluminum alloy known as ALOX, The cadet also comes in red and black scales. They are all made very sturdy and tight. I normally carry a Cadet for dress wear and the Pioneer in jeans. The Swiss Army now issues a much larger and heavy knife with tools for their new issue rifles. Victorinox has a large international civilian market for the original knife and Cadet so I suspect both will be around for quite a while. All carry a lifetime guarantee! (Top three knives are Victorinox, bottom knife is a Wegner.)
7. 401k and 403 funds are another con job. My son had his whole retirement in a 401K (He is management and had no company pension program. Fund Manager (reputable firm, big bank) took all the money and left for the Caymans. All of the "alternate"programs depend on investments in either Financial Market or Government bonds. Government bonds are another con job. They are just IOUs and are immediately spent with future taxpayers holding the debt. (Big part of our current National Debt) Financial Market is just a big Casino operation and has nothing whatsoever to do with GDP or public business growth. It is a fancy card game and the House (Wall Street Brokers and Banks) always win, just like in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. I had a very reputable Mutual Fund, with wonderful growth showing on all of its Annual Reports. It went "belly up" in the crash and paid out millions of dollars to all of its CEOs and Brokers. Me? I got nothing! Capitalism , and Free Market (Both wonderful ideas btw) are based on the Goods Market: producing a product or service and letting price (demand) dictate the market. Problem is that the Goods Market got sold out by the Financial Market and now all we have is what they call Political Capitalism or Crony Capitalism. This is nothing but Fascism, or Corporate Socialism. As it stands right now, no ordinary man is going to get rich or even get enough to retire by playing the "big Game" with Wall Street. The odds are stacked against us. My biggest worry out of all of this is that Socialism is going to rear its ugly head again. Either way accept it, we are screwed!
8.
People been riding that hobby-horse since at least 2008. How would it be any different than social security? If you got a stack in yer IRA and yer 10 years out from retirement-- The gov takes the money, writes you an IOU, then the gov spends the money (ie gives your money to their friends allegedly to build solar panels and such). Then in 10 years when you retire, congress will be squabbling about how the hell can they scrape up enough money to pay your retirement check.
Exactly what happened, except the fund was depleted before present "King" took throne. Social Security Fund was used for IRAQ and Afghanistan wars. Both political parties were in cahoots on this one!
9. Patriotism has nothing to do with political affiliation. Serving your country, recognizing the rights of others and obeying the law show patriotism. No, I am not a liberal and no I am not a Democrat. I am a thirty year retired USMC MGySgt, a Vietnam War veteran (4 tours "in country") and was a Republican for over forty years. I am now an Independent as I will not wear a brown shirt and red armband and worship a Republican King and his court, nor will I allow a Socialist Democratic Party to dictate to me how to live. We are right now at the same point Germany was in 1934: only two choices and both of them are bad.I don't Identify with either party, I identify as being an American, and I have earned the right to call myself that by service to my nation, not by party affiliation. The store owner had the right to do what he did but he would never get my business. He was a good Republican but a lousy American.
10. When I took my Gunseye Pistol self defense course, several students brought this up to LTC Cooper, and yes, he did have "Mozambique Drills" in his course, He told us that the "Mozambique" always works on paper targets that don't move around and is always demonstrated on same. The problem he brought up was that a real target is doesn't usually stand still and for sure is moving in some way if you just shot him twice in the chest. The human head rarely is anywhere as still as the body. He set up a helium filled balloon in a breeze and had the people asking the question fire at it. They were all good shots but they all missed the balloon completely. It made a believer of me. I would fire five shots ( EDC is a 642) COM. At home I would fire two shots COM (Mossberg 500 with 00) I believe if you practice enough to keep your shots within a 5" circle and buy good effective HP ammo COM will do the job. If somebody is rushing you or shooting at you it is no time to be playing Roy Rogers!
11. I have a Glock 23 that I would love to carry, but have never been successful with OWB or IWB carry. I have an MTAC but it still dug the dickens out of my side. I dress fairly light, so OWB always shows. Glock stays in gunsafe and a S&W 642 rides in my front pocket in a GALCO Pro 158 leather pocket holster. This combo works with everything I wear, including my bathrobe at night!

H&R 949 22 revolver

I learned how to shoot a revolver on my grandfather's 6" barrel H&R 922. Taking the cylinder out to reload wasn't all that big a problem as the gun was a nine shot, so you usually took care of business with one cylinder load. My first shotgun was an H&R Topper 20 gauge. H&R made rugged, well constructed guns that were meant to last. Many, many young boys learned on H&R pistols and shotguns. I have two fairly new NEF (H&R) .410 shotguns in my gun safe right now. Grandkids' guns!
13. Most Christians read only bible verses or sunday school lessons instead of the whole testament. Yeshua probably did not carry a sword, but we know for sure several. if not all, of his disciples did. These were really turbulent and dangerous times in Palestine. At least one and possibly two other disciples were Zealots. Zealot during this time didn't mean really into something, it meant a rebel. In short a freedom fighter. So there were armed members at the very first "church services" and the Lord did not request that they disarm. I think that sets the precedent.
14. Had a few denarius left over last month so I decided to bring an old warrior out of the gun safe and upgrade it. My Maverick 88 (dual rail) was my main HD until I upgraded a tornado survivor Mossberg 500A about 5 years ago. The Maverick was a very reliable weapon and I always felt it was a shame to retire it. I put on a Blackhawk Knoxx NRS SpecOps (non recoil reducing) stock. A Limb Saver recoil pad, a Blackhawk sling and a HighViz bead. The old soldier is looking very Tacticool and appropriately deadly. I now have an HD shotgun at each end of the house, never too far away!
15. I have one in 2 1/2" Barrel. It is the house handgun (Primary HD is Mossy 500A tactical). Probably easiest revolver in the world to shoot.
16. American Jews did not come from Israel. They came from Germany, Russia. Poland and other Eastern Bloc countries. The israelis themselves came from Europe, many with a very small portion of Jewish blood. Israel is not their "mother country" and many of them are not even concerned about israel, but think of themselves as Americans, just as we European descended Americans do. The preoccupation with Israel is a Fundamental Christian thing and based on incorrect biblical references. The Israelis are not rebuilding the temple and have not gathered all of the other Jews to them. That would have been the biblical israel. I support them simply because they are a small country with democratic principles and are surrounded by non-democratic enemies. Israel is not sacred. We do not have to save Israel for Jesus to come back, this isn't the Israel he was talking about. But I still think we need to keep them alive as a buffer against the Arab countries.
17. The electoral college is part and parcel of the Constitution of the United states. The changes that need to be made have to be made at state level, not Federal. I am an independent and not a party lackey of either of the two criminal gangs currently ruining this country. I understand the need for the rich elite and the labor unions to continue with the current party system. I just don't really buy that either group should really run this country! To bring the the electoral college in line with democracy and true representation is to have the states all split their state electors along popular vote lines (some already do) and then nobody's vote gets "thrown out." Make the parties actually compete for the vote and not mandate the vote by state governors and parties. With the fairness of a "percentage split" there is no need to change the electoral system, it will be fair and truly reflect the "peoples' choice" for office. I wish everybody would stop trying to change the Constitution and just follow it!
18. I stopped being a "Republican" after about a year of "W" I now consider myself a "Goldwater Conservative" Independent. After being a Republican for almost half a century, I take no delight in how the GOP is self-destructing. The Dems don't really even have to campaign. Every time a Republican opens his mouth on TV they re-elect Obama! The GOP needs a purge and all new people, real Conservatives not Neo-Cons!
19. I don't need a knife to fight off Ninjas or Samuraii, what I need is a good tool. I use my EDC knife to open packages, open beer bottles and tighten screws. I used to carry my scout knife but that was given to #1 son when he joined scouts, I then carried a Victorinox "SWAK", the old red scaled one with a small tool box enclosed. I recently discovered the Original Issue SWAK and fell in love with it. I have both the Wegner Original Issue SWAK and a Victorinox Pioneer which is the same knife but without the key ring bail (a rivet is used instead). I now EDC the Victorinox Pioneer. It is all I need in a knife and pretty compact to carry.
20. The security issue is a double edged sword and we tend to make it so. We scream and holler that somebody wasn't doing their job if somebdy gets in somewhere and starts a massacre. Then we scream and holler if somebody wants to search us. We scream and holler that shrinks aren't doing their job if they don't report "nut jobs" to the police. Then we scream and holler of we're turned down for a HCP because it became known that we were taking a sedative. Fact is, anytime you have ample security, rights are infringed, goes with the game. We are always screaming that they didn't do enough to stop "those people". Then we say they need to leave "us" alone. Truth is, "those people" are "us" until they start shooting. No difference on the surface. H***, some of them are even Republicans and Christians like "us" too. You can have more freedom and rights or you can have security. You can't have both. I tend towards freedom and rights and less towards security. I always assume that everybody else could be one of "those people" and EDC a .38 in my pocket. By the same token, I am realistic in understanding that there is really very little that the establishment can do to prevent these incidents, they are just part of our culture. It is the Individual's responsiblity to be aware and to be ready for trouble.
21. Is there a supplier for the Federal P38MA Nyclad .38 Spcl ammo in the greater Nashville area? I have tried for weeks to find an online supply and all are out of stock. The Federal catalogue indicates that they are still making the ammo, but all of the forums say it is no longer being made. I am beginning to believe that it is an urban myth!
22. Democrats = Populist Socialists: Appeal to idealistic utopian intellectuals and ignorant out of work masses . (Shadow Communists) Republicans = National Socialists: Appeal to wealthy elites and angry ignorant raciist masses. (Shadow Nazis) Where the h*** are the Americans?
23. What I am tired of is a bunch of Americans trying to tell me how I have to vote. I'll vote the way I feel I need to. This d*** two party system is not democracy, it is special interests on one side trying to dominate my life more than the special interests on the other side. The worst part is that you "Supermen worshippers" don't even see that you are democracy's worst enemy. Forget the personalities and the lies and start looking at the problems and some possible solutions. Neither of the two reigning parties is going to do anything to improve our lives. The answer is simple, " Don't send anybody back", send all new people for the next three elections and it will so muddy the waters that the parties may very well lose control. Send as many Independents as you can. The argument that "they can't do anything" doesn't hold water. The people there now aren't doing anything!
24. Our Reps and Senators will do whatever their corporate sponsors tell them to do. Paperwork like this will just end up being shredded by a high school aged staffer. Petitions and letters have stopped being of any effect for some time now. The Rep or Senator will follow the party line without deviation out of concern for public needs or wants.
