So, you think a bunch of farmers or city folk in the 1700's trained regularly, and that's what they meant? That must be the same place where they said everyone must drive a Corvette.

I'm not suggesting that dry fire has no value. I'm stating that it's not even close to what some appear to be suggesting as necessary to be qualified, (in their minds at least), to carry a weapon. If someone wants to train like Rambo to feel comfortable carrying a weapon in public that's fine with me. It's their money. I just take issue with people who want to extend their standards to someone else publicly and randomly. Nowhere in the 2nd does it say "....as long as you have proper training."

Should our men and women in the armed forces...

I don't remember an evaluation back in 1982. I don't know how it is today. I think all who were in years ago had personal examples of people who clearly used testing substitutes in order to qualify for enlistment standards. We had a guy so dumb that you had to show him what you wanted him to do in order for him to understand what you were telling him to do. His name was Stewart, and I had to show him how to swab a deck in order for him to understand. He graduated boot camp with me. :( -

I think that's more of a condition due to the feudalistic customs of the military, and that the military treatment of the enlisted ranks was much harsher than it is today. -

Yes, and that's because the public has been trained to associate PTSD with anything "crazy" in the military. There're unstable people everywhere which makes me wonder why they don't do psychological evaluations in MEPS. -
That's a subjective statement. The Marine Corps didn't have me spend 90% of my time sitting around dry-firing for sure, and neither did the police department nor the academy. Surviving the real thing is what trained the best hence one of the reasons why newby's are not valued in a combat zone. So following that logic practicing in an environment that is as close to the real thing as possible is what's effective: however, not something the average gun owner can afford.

I neither doubt PTSD is real nor that it's confined to the military: however, the military has a responsibility to identify those who have it and take control of those with it who are active. The chain of command can recognize it and limit someone's right to carry on base while they are struggling with it. In the recent shooting the guy was a driver who was deployed for a very short time. I don't know the specifics, but there are many more men and women who endured a LOT MORE and who have not shot-up their fellows. -
Missouri was an open carry state when I was a LEO, and guess what...it wasn't a big deal.

I don't interpret this thread to be limited to the job site. As a field artilleryman in the gun park sitting in the Mojave desert I would not be able to handle having one on while I worked either. And yes, your stuff walking off happened many times, but I wouldn't limit someone because of what a relatively few do during a few hours out of the week. Command is inherently arrogant with its throw-back to feudalistic times so they'd just stick to the "We can do it but you can't" type of mentality. -

A couple of the responses are alarming, and I think anyone that would say no or limit it to senior military needs to re-evaluate their position. It's ok for you to carry concealed but not a private or seaman? WTH? -
Yay! Sex without orgasm!!! Not!!! Sound, flash, recoil, and hitting what you aimed at are all missing. It's not the same thing, IMHO.

On the lighter side - how NOT to fish with a hand grenades

It's probably a Russian "Jackass" video stunt. -
This, and many local ranges aren't conducive for anything other than bull's-eye shooting.

I've seen trained people do these kinds of things. Lots of LEO's have ND's throughout the country, and have shot the wrong person. Heck! In NY it seems that spray'n and pray'n is a department sport.

I couldn't even see the spoon fly, so it either had a very short fuse or he held it a few seconds. DUMB!!! -

I read the title and thought this was a tale of some co-eds gone wild. :) -
I wish On Target had this. I bought my wife a .22 Taurus revolver there and then took her onto their range to get her used to it. She could hardly pull the trigger on it. On Target said sorry for your troubles. And this is why I won't buy at Outdoor World who keep trigger locks on their weapons and won't take them off to test the trigger pull.
