  1. I usually send people to Greene's Militaria in Donelson.
  2. Interesting video. Do you think they wanted the gun to be "slim"?? I'd have to see one. It has some features I'm not fond of.
  3. For people lauding Israel's stand on guns for private citizens, this thread in a different forum should be enlightening. Keep in mind Israel is basically a socialist state and this just confirms that. The gist is: http://www.hashkafah.com/index.php?showtopic=42505
  4. "No honest man needs a gun smaller than a canned ham." Bill Ruger. Maybe with the Ruger family gone the company will start producing guns for people who want to carry concealed instead of the boat anchors they've been making.
  5. Hmm, I dont know about you. First you admire a guy's package. Now this. And your screen name. I'd bet you probably play steel guitar too.....
  6. When you're an arrogant jerk you can find something to bitch about anything. I cant remember what exactly his beef was, something about the slide release not being radiused or something. Whatever, it was a reflection of him, not Ed Brown product.
  7. Nice looking gun. Ed Brown's have a rep for being among the very best 1911s out there. And I heard that from my smith who has spent over 30 years working on 1911s and building them. A side note: a few months ago the gun smith from another shop wandered in here. He proceeded to tell me how a customer had ordered an Ed Brown Cobra. When it came he asked the gunsmith what he thought of it. The gun smith spent 10 minutes trashing this gun that the customer had paid about $2k for, telling him he couldnt believe they had done this or hadnt done that and he could do a much better/cheaper job. I was waiting for the smith to explain how he got an Ed Brown Cobra out of his butt where the customer had stuck it. But it didnt happen.
  8. Isnt there something about an empty barrel? Why dont we discuss why the 30-40 Krag is superior to the 5.56mm?

No, we only sound like we know something. But the short answer is, yes you can pick up a .45gap pistol for much less than a .45 acp or .40S&W but you will probably end up spending the savings for ammo down the road. But the .45gap is a perfectly good serviceable cartridge.

Actually Hornady makes a line of LE TAP. The difference is that the cases are not coated like the commercial version. This is to save money because LE depts are stingy/underfunded. So the commercial ammo is actually better than the LE stuff. With Winchester, you can get the LE stuff. I have some 9mm in the shop now.

I dont know any depts that use Buffalo Bore, Double Tap or even Cor Bon. I've seen Buffalo Bore in one shop (mine) so I dont know how much circulation it gets. And I figure that the major ammo makers developed the rounds and the bullets so they must know something about effective loadings for them.
  12. Some things just dont need an explanation.

Speer only lists 125gr bullets on its website for .357. Winchester lists 105gr and 125 gr for .357SIG. Federal only lists 125gr bullets for the .357SIG. Remington lists only 125gr bullets for the .357SIG. And all of them are in the 1350-1375 fps range. So unless you are buying some off-brand ammo from a fly by night maker, I don't know how you can say those are light loads. As for pressures, Accurate lists pressures in its reloading guide. The 9mm loads run from about 26,000 CUP to 32,000 CUP. The .357SIG loads run from 33,000 to 40,000 CUP. And the .40 S&W loads run to a maximum of 35,000 CUP. The 147gr projectiles are rated to go just 1050fps but still produce over 38,000 CUP. Upping the velocity to 1350 fps will produce something I'd rather not think about going off inches from my face. So the .357sig loads produce far more pressure than the 9mm, and even more than the .40. Shooting the loads you seem to prefer seems a surefire way to wear out the gun or even spark a kB.

You've picked an oddball as representative of the calibre. In fact the typical loading for the .357sig is a 125gr bullet going about 1350 fps. By contrast, the 9mm +P+ is a 127gr bullet going at 1210 fps. And shooting a 140gr projectile at that speed out of a pistol sounds like a great way to shorten pistol life, if not end up with a kB. And I dont understand your point about bridging the gap between 9mm and .357. One is an auto cartridge and the other a revolver cartridge. There isnt any gap.

In the personal protection application you are exactly right. In fact, the Buffalo Bore .38 +P+ kicks harder than the 158gr .357s I've shot. It's different in hunting type apps. In the .357 you can get up to 180gr bullets going pretty fast. I've never seen 38s loaded like that. Of course in the old days (WW2) the British loaded 200gr bullets in .38spc and .38S&W.
  16. Try carrying a 1911 without a safety. I know you can do it but it sure makes it tough. As for carrying them, I have owned them and shot them. One time I decided I might want to carry one. So I took a shop gun out to shoot an IDPA match. Out of four stages I failed to click off the safety every time when the buzzer went off. While I could practice to overcome that I decided it wasnt worth it.
  17. Actually almost any of the "Deagles" would fit that category. Too heavy to do much with.
  18. You raise a point I should have clarified. "Useless" doesnt mean useless to you. It means either useless for the intended purpose (like the 2" 500mag I mentioned) or useless for any purpose other than being "cool." The 5-7 is good for what it was designed for: delivering a highly penetrating round from a duty sized handgun carrying a large capacity. Just because most people couldnt really benefit from that doesnt render it useless, just irrelevant for most people.

The issue always seems to be: does it do something that isnt being done by existing calibers. In the case of the .40S&W the answer seems to be yes, splitting the difference between .45acp and 9mm, heavier bullet than 9 going faster than .45. But the .357 is merely a 9mm magnum (in fact they entertained calling it a 9mm something) and its performance is little different than a hot 9mm, but with more expensive ammo, less ammo choice, and lower mag capacity. The fact that depts are adopting it means little in the short term. Lots of depts looked at the 10mm. But the jury is still out.
  20. I agree and it goes further. The Dems could stop the war tomorrow. They have had the ability to do that for months. Simply cut off funding and US involvement will cease. BUt then they would have to take responsibility, and would lose it as an election issue. It is far more valuable to them as fodder for anti-GOP rhetoric. So they are cynically using US casualties to bolster their own political standing via outrage. Totally disgusting.
  21. Submit your proposals or nominations for the most useless handgun. For proposals, something that could be produced but isn't currently. For nominations something in current production. Merely being "cool" isn't enough to save the gun from this list--indeed, that's got to be one criterion. My first nomination (current production): The 2" Smith 500Mag. The gun itself is close to useless although for pistol hunting boar the long-barrel versions make a kind of sense. But 2" guns are made for concealment/ease of carry. But a carry gun that weighs over 54oz empty really doesn't hold a lot of attraction. Proposed Production: Same gun in airweight Centennial configuration.
  22. Silvertips aren't premium cartridges? Have you looked at the price?

+1. I don't see it doing anything that current round choices don't already do in some form or another. There is a graveyard out there somewhere for experimental pistol calibres, always touted as the latest and greatest by gun mags, that never caught on but hang on somehow. In that category you'll find .400 Cor-Bon, .41 Magnum, .41AE, .50AE, .445 SuperMag. .357Maximum, with .357Sig on the short list.
