Thanks yall. Here's an update this morning, where things look a lot better than they looked last night. He's beat up and got a lot of stiches and staples, but it looks like he's going to make it through. His most serious issues is still theskull fracture and the "bruising on the back of the brain" which sounds awful. They're meeting with a neurosurgeon this morning. He's definitely got a long road in front of him, but things look better than they did yesterday.

If you are a praying person a friend of mine could use your prayers. He's law enforcement in Atlanta and paid the price for service this afternoon. He was directing traffic and was struck by a truck whose driver wasn't paying attention. Touch and go right now. He's in ICU with bleeding around the brain being his most immediate issue. You don't need a Class III license, as their is no such thing. Owning an NFA type firearm (Machine Gun, Suppressor, Short Barrel Rifle or Short Barrel Shotgun) is as simple as paying a tax stamp per item($200 in the case of a machine gun), filling out the appropriate forms, and waiting patiently to get it approved by the ATF. The process generally takes 4-6 months these days.

As a forensics specialist who does a lot of work in child protection, I'll go a step further. As a parent, if you allow your child to be on the internet, you have a responsibility as the parent to know where they are going and what they are doing. Period. Anything else is neglect. You wouldn't let your child go somewhere without knowing where it was and who it was with, the internet is the same. It is a wonderful tool, and a great resource, but it is full of predators and is dangerous to a child who doesn't have fully developed decision making capabilities or the ability to fully understand or recognize consequences. It's the same as leaving a loaded weapon within reach of your child. I can't tell you the number of calls we've taken over the years from 'parents' who don't have any idea where there kids are or what they might have gotten mixed up in and are now having to deal with the sometimes life changing consequences because it's just AIM, or MySpace, or Facebook or whatever. A computer isn't a babysitter. You have a responsibility to your child. It might make them mad, but you're their parent not their friend. Do you your job.

What environment are you going to be using it in? There are some great technical materials used to make really good, lightweight bags these days, but there are some things to consider. A down bag can pack up really small, be really light and super toasty, but its useless if it gets wet. Some of the different poly fill bags don't pack up as small, and may be a little heavier, but have some insulating value even when wet. As far as rating goes, you want one rated about 10-15 degrees cooler than you will be using the bag in. A zero degree bag doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be warm at zero, just that you won't get hypothermia. What dats82 said about stuffing it is correct, in fact, the bag should come with a larger storage bag that allows it some room to breathe when you aren't using it. Also, consider your whole sleep system. A good pad underneath you not only keeps you more comfortable, it also gives you another layer of insulation between you and that great heat sink known as the ground. As you are in Murfreesboro, it's probably worth making the drive up to Nashville to check a couple of places like REI that will let you pull the bags down off the shelf and try them out. You don't want to invest in a $200 mummy bag just to find that you're claustrophobic. Have fun. Be safe.

Intresting read. This along with the post the other day about having easy access to your weapon seems key. The person you are likely to encounter in a defense situation has both ease of access and increasingly few moral issues associated with pulling the trigger. It's a bad world out there.

Welcome. I've got a personal preference for the classis Ruger 10/22 as well, but the Marlin model 60 is a great, proven platform as well. You won't go wrong with either.

As the old saying goes - "An armed society is a polite society". I read a piece not too long ago whose author's premise was that armed citizens are better citizens for exactly that reason. You have to think about your words and your actions when carrying a lethal weapon on your person.
