"Still got the shovel!" Classic! Sent outta my ass by flying monkeys.

Get over yourself. .223 is nowhere near an underpowered round. Have you actually, really, truly seen what the NATO 5.56 round does to a person? IN person? ...... Didn't think so. I and many others here have done so. Personally & extensively. I have never said that the .30-30 is the 'perfect' all round cartridge, I just simply opined that it was very capable, affordable & widespread. I also only opined that the rifles fit every one of your criteria, removable magazine excepted. They're rugged, reliable, well proven, adequately powerful & fit your price point. I became argumentative simply because you were obviously looking for an argument & I'm nothing if not obliging. Also, just to clarify a point: I'm 39 years old, a lifelong hunter & a British Army infantry veteran. I was an armorer. Please don't lecture me further on my lack of firearms knowledge. I was doing it for a living in stressful & real SHTF situation while, I assume, you were still on the tit.

Manbearpig is REAL! I'm suuuper serial.

Again, I don't think you've ever handled or shot firearms & you're talking out of your hole. I'm betting you learned ballistics from watching 'Shooter' If the 5.56 is so poor, why do NATO nations still insist that it's fine? If .30-30 is so poor &a unavailable, how is it that Walmart ALWAYS has it? My local gas station ALWAYS has it & I've yet to find it at more than $.75 per round??? How is it that the .30-30 has killed (many times over) EVERY SINGLE animal in the US, reliably & consistently since 1891??? Lever guns unreliable? How about all the Winchester 1873s that are STILL going? The gun that won the West earned it's reputation for a reason. Another question.......What in the hell are you actually expecting to happen? Because I'll bet you everything I own that it ain't gonna.

Not giving you a hard time either, but I think you've got no experience with firearms & are talking out your hole.

That's exactly why our (the English) Police Force are the finest in the world........ The poor barstards have to actually kick you to death.

Well, all through summer I spend hours mooching around the woods looking for shed antlers & I know there's no law against that. Can't see how this is any different.

Not as far as I know.

For that price range, you could also do a Lee Enfield tanker or jungle carbine.....

I honestly don't know where you're finding any .30-30 leverguns for more than $350! Gunbroker, GOC, Armslist etc.... There are literally hundreds of Marlin 336s & Winchester 94s to be had around $300-350. Every pawn shop here in Tullahoma had at least 2. Tollivers in Manchester had 7 Marlins last time I was in there.

I hate to even use the phrase, but this thread has so much win it's ridiculous.

I'm going to throw another vote for .30-30 Either a Marlin for ease of stripping & working or Winchester 94 if weight is a consideration. If there's a more commonly available non-military cartridge than the ol' .30WCF (.22 aside) I can't imagine what it might be. Every gun store, supermarket, gas station, farm supply place, country store & hell, probably pet shop sells it. It's cheap, reliable, you can cram 8 of 'em in either rifle & honestly, if you're shooting at something that needs more than that, it's time to beat feet to the rear anyway! Short, accurate, light, dependable & been in use in the US since God was a boy. Every country home either has, had or should have at least one. My only other grab-to-go guns are my Henry .22 & my much loved, heavily modified .303 Enfield (For which I buy & reload ammunition at every turn & have never yet paid more than $14 a box)

DHS raiding store for counterfeit Coach bags? DHS? Really?

If you're seen about town with a fake Gucci clutch-purse, the terrorists win. -
Another vote for .204 or .22-250 here. One other possible option that would give you pretty much (I think) the best of all possible worlds, is something in quarter-inch caliber. .25-06, .257 Roberts (or Weatherby) etc... Not too heavy or fast for smaller critters but plenty adequate for mid-range (2-400yd) deer hunting.

Meth is a hell of a drug.....

I've seen more dead 'dillers on the roads round Tullahoma than coons, possums & skunks combined in the past couple of years. They actually taste like pork. I've eaten them in Texas & Mexico & they're very tasty.

Thank ye' Dave! I was really hoping to have my .62 Fusil de Chasse ready by this season, but unfortunately the guy doing the stock carving & engraving suffered a pretty major setback. Actually, his right arm pretty much fell off (not kidding) so I'll have to wait 'til next year for the flincher :( -

Here's my old faithful, 'Long Tom' 42" Colerain barrel, 1:56" round bottom rifling, 85gn of FFG Goex black powder, .530 round ball, pillow ticking patch lubed with hog oil & beeswax. Home made shooting bag, home made horn. Shoots 3" high at 50yds, 3" low at 100 & I can hold a one-hole, 5 shot group, offhand at 50. At 100, I'm around 3-4" groups -
Beginning to Yote hunt, suggestions
Handsome Rob replied to Bosgarage57's topic in Hunting and Fishing
As far as I'm aware (be warned, I have been wrong before) it's illegal to hunt coyotes at night with a spotlight or NV gear in the State of Tennessee. -
I don't & won't have a credit card, but I've been nailed on both my debit cards, twice. Both times right after a trip up to Wyoming involving stops at 'foreignly run' motels. First time was to the tune of $32,000+ on my personal card, this past time was for $124,000 on the joint account card. I pay for card protection & I was notified of the charges within 24hrs of them occurring on the accounts. Nothing was actually removed from my accounts this time, but in 2010 I had to send an EMail to every single company that had been purchased from, requesting a refund before the bank would re-credit my account. Oddly, they were all in Spain & they were all companies selling....umm....'enhancement devices' for men. I still can't figure out how this happens as I have a $1000 limit on each card. That took some 'splaining to The Wife! My recent trip to Florida was funded with pre-paid debit cards. If I'm staying at motels in the future, this is all I'll use.
