  1. Would the same school also exclude a kid because he was call Remington, KIMBERley or GUNther? What about everyone with the surname Winchester or Benelli? What about all the little Tommys running around? For God's sake.........this is probably THE most ridiculous thing I've read since I hear the EU had banned the sale of 60 watt lightbulbs. Even The Wife, an ardent non-gun person thinks this is frikkin' ludicrous.
  2. I don't have any personal experience, but I have a couple of good friends that shoot thousands of rounds a month through their Glock 19s. They both shoot IDPA type stuff (hope I've got that right!) & reload their own. All I now is that they load very light; just enough to knock over whatever steel they're shooting at. They both load 120gn cast bullets, not jacketed & I believe (although I'll have to double check for you...) 3gn of either Bullseye or Titegroup. I do believe they just keep reusing & reloading the same brass & I would have to guess that most of their cases have been used at least a dozen times now. I've shot a couple of hundred of their reloads through my own 19 & I can't say that I noticed anything out of the ordinary at all. Let me send Mason a quick message & I'll find out their exact load........
  3. Thanks for the offer on the Barnes RW. I'd rather stick to a lighter bullet, I have shoulder problems & can't take too much in the way of recoil. 405s at 1600fps are about my limit for bench shooting out of my guns! From Googling around for a few hours, it looks like Hornady 350 RN/FP bullets are about the best value for jacketed rounds. I'm not sure what exactly Remington are doing, but I've had estimated delivery dates varying from 'This week' to January 2013.
  4. Well put it this way. you ain't getting it back! It's my 'most fondled' rifle, although I still grab the Henry when I'm out & about on the farm. I stripped it right down & gave everything a good clean & polish. It took a while to get the 50 year old grime out of the wood, but I got there in the end & re-oiled it with boiled Linseed. I installed the Skinner peep & can happily shoot 3½" groups at 100yds all day long from the bench. I gotta say, the amount of recoil compared to a .30-30 came as quite a surprise. After 50 rounds, you really know you've been shooting.
  5. As far as I can tell, the FTX bullets get top marks from everyone using them, however as I understand it, I'd need to shorten my brass to load for the .45-70. I'd really prefer to leave my cases full length to give me a little more flexibility in bullet choice.
  6. I'm really looking for some Remington bulk bullets for my .45-70s I'd prefer the 350gn, but would be happy enough with the 405s. Trouble is, everyone seems to be out of stock. Do any of you reg'lar reloaders know of anyone who has them in stock right now? I'm open to other suggestions/manufacturers.... (I'm absolutely NOT interested in casting, lubing & sizing my own right now)
  7. Says the owner of THE most beautiful rifles ever built......I'll trade you a few shots with it for a few with your 99 in .303 Savage! I really wish I could find a nice 99, I don't even care what caliber (although I'd love a .250-3000)
  8. Big fan here too! I only have a moderate collection, common stuff really, but like y'all they just fit me. I have zero interest in black rifles, but I'd happily fill my safe with levers! Top to bottom; Winchester '94AE in .30-30 Marlin 1895 in .45-70 Marlin 336 in .44 mag Henry H001 in .22
  9. I just got this delivered today! Unfortunately, due to a jacked up shoulder I haven't had the opportunity to cut loose with it yet. However, I did get time this afternoon to quickly knock up a 'Gun Bra' It's the first one I've done & I really like it! I may have to make a few more for my other leverguns
  10. It's the guide model with the 18½" barrel.
  11. Okay, so I picked one up on another forum. Next question is: To Scope or not to Scope? Scout scope or standard Scope? I've never, ever had a scope on a lever action before, all my others wear Skinner peeps & I love 'em, but with the .45-70 having the potential to reach out a little further than a .44 mag or .30-30, do you think I'd see any real advantage in putting an optic on it? I already have a longer range deer rifle, but I know the .45-70 would be adequate if I happen to see a deer at loner range. Oh, & thanks for the load data. I'll get a pound of 2400 & give 'er a try.
  12. Well, the deal I had lined up has fallen flat on it's ass. However, y'all have really got my juices flowing! I just put a WANT ad in the classifieds, if any of you are looking at offloading one.......*hintetty-hint-hint*
  13. I cast & reload for .45-70 already, which is one of the big selling points for me. Almost as cheap to shoot as .22 LR! Just out of interest, for my High Wall I load a .458", 405gn bullet over 50.6gn of Varget. I get about 1650fps out of a 30" barrel. ILP, What's your loading with 2400? I'd like to try something other than Varget. My load has plenty of pep, but isn't as accurate as I'd like.
  14. I may be buying a Marin (pre-Remington) 1895 SS this week. Seems like a decent deal at $500 & I know I love the cartridge, but I've never owned or shot a '95. Can I get some opinions on the rifle please? I know there's a bunch of you that have them, so, what's to like, not to like & what should I look out for? How's the recoil? The only .45-70's I've shot are Sharps, High-Walls & Springfields. All heavy guns with 24"+ barrels. This model has the 18½" tube, I beieve.
  15. Isn't the National Guard technically a militia? Civilians called upon to support & perform military duties as & when the need arises?
  16. She just prefers the simplicity of black & grey. She likes simple things
  17. Well, since we're bringing Wives into it.......
  18. Here y'go..... The gauge in my right ear is now at 1¾" My left ear is at 10ga top, 8ga middle & 6ga bottom. The lobe itself is split after a stretching 'accident' (Also resulting in 3 lost teeth.....not mine ) Labret is 14ga as is my Earl. You may also be able to pick out the scars on my right eyebrow....used to be 7 12ga rings in there. I've also had both nipples pierced & had a few in m' junk, but they've all been removed now My tattoos don't mean a damn thing. My left sleeve was something I designed & traced out myself. The wrist piece on my right arm was done drunk at a bike rally, The right bicep done by a 16 year old (I was 15 at the time) in his garden shed & was my first. The rondel on my right shoulder was done after I plied the artist (also responsible for 90% of my sleeve) with class 'A' narcotics for 24 hours straight, a lifetime ago. We'd both been up & about & doing a lot of drinking & 'other stuff' for about 48 straight hours. The fact that it looks even remotely like it was supposed to is a pure miracle! *DISCLAIMER* I don't do anything like that any more. I was a whole different person 15 years ago!
  19. I started on this particular build prior to the shorty Frankengun, but just got it finished this afternoon. It started off with a stock I found at the County dump. I think it may be from a Cabelas sporterized Hawken, but I'm not sure. I pursuaded an Investarms lock into the mortice, without too much hassle, which leads me to believe it's a Lyman/Investarms/Cabelas gun. The Barrel is another .50cal T/C Hawken I picked up on EBay, minus sights, rib & nipple. I had the Lyman globe sight from another gun & fitted a Skinner rear peep. Track of the Wolf supplied a suitable under rib & thimbles. The trigger guard is a Lyman Trade rifle. I fitted this simply because it was the nearest thing I could find to the correct pattern, without having to do too much chisel work which, as we've already seen, is NOT my strongest talent! The trigger unit started as a double-set set I replaced with a Davis Deerslayer on my GPR. I removed the set trigger & all associated gubbins, stoned & polished it to within an inch of it's life (along with the lock internals) to produce a creep free, clean breaking, zero overtravel, 2 pound break. It took a little re-inletting & maneuvering of the trigger & guard to get everything lined up, so the trigger wasn't right at the front of the guard. That was actually the toughest part of the entire build! Again, please forgive my sloppy workmanship. Wood confuses me! I still need to blue the rib & thimbles too. Once again, the total out of pocket build cost (not including the parts I already had) came in a shade under $100 & from my few shots today, seems like it'll make a FINE gun for the range!
  20. I'm just getting started in Tenkara. So far, I've not even wetted a fly, but I'm hoping to this weekend. There is a TON of great info on Tenkara, plus some of the best deals I've found on rods, lines & flies, here > http://tenkaraflyfish.webs.com/ I've got the Fountainhead Caddis 330 rod with the 5:5 action. I am amazed at how delicate it is! I fly fish with furled leaders & I love their soft flexibility, so I decided to go with a furled Tenkara line also. I'll see how that plays out, I guess. Like you, I love the simplicity of the system. A rod that collapses to 21" & weighs about 2 oz, no reel, a simple line & a fly.
  21. Okay, I just HAD to go & redo the under rib. I found another piece in my parts bucket & it now reaches from stock to muzzle. MUCH better!
  22. I thought it sounded hokey. Obviously Dick's are just making it up as they go along. Thanks guys. For those that don't know, I'm not a US Citizen, or Permanent Resident. I am a Non-Immigrant Alien, here completely legally on an investment Visa. I am legal to purchase & own (but not carry) any & all legal firearms, just like the rest of yer! The reason I brought this up, as much as my concern, was that the credit card machine asked automatically if I were a US Citizen as soon as the ammunition was swiped at the point of sale.
  23. Left arm........tingly.........mouth........watery.......*nnnnnnnggggghh*
