Hot diggety pig! That's amazing, thank you!
-
Sir, you're a legend!

I'm guessing I'll probably need a dozen, over what I already have here.

For all you deer/elk/bear/moose hunters. I'm asking a big favor here, I know, but I'm looking for as many deer hides as I can get my hands on. I'm not wanting these for any commercial or profitable venture. Next year I have plans to build a 'summerhouse' for friends to camp over during the year. I have plans to build an ancient Saxon Roundhouse on our land & I'm really wanting as many skins as possible for wall-coverings & insulation (Any of y'all are more than welcome to come stay a while!) One of these..... I'll be having them all tanned as a batch once season is out. I don't need any special treatment, if anyone feels inclined to donate their hides just roll it up tight, flesh-side in, & throw it in the freezer. PM me & I'll drive over & collect it!

Subsonic, un-suppressed shotgun. Yes it may make you look like a tool, but I can see the attraction for Turkey hunting! http://www.guns.com/the-metro-gun-subsonic-shotgun-barrel-system-11424.html

People "scared" of eating non store bought food
Handsome Rob replied to tercel89's topic in General Chat
We raise free ranging chickens & I made eggs for a fishing buddy of mine one morning. I thought his eyes were going to pop out when he realized he was eating proper eggs, not those anemic store-bought 'things' I'm not preachy about food, but pretty much all we eat is free-range & organic. Carrots that still have mud on them really DO taste better than pre-packed carrots. Eggs from chickens that can peck around, eat bugs & worms are not only better for you, but they taste fantastic! I also do all the cooking in our family & have done for years. I butcher my own deer, birds & hogs, when I can get 'em. Knowing how your food is prepared, where it comes from & how it was treated while it was still on the hoof really makes a difference in how it tastes. Happy pigs really do make the best bacon! -
ya, i'll have to see what I can borrow.
NOPE! Shoot what you're used to and accurate with. 5.56 WILL kill deer. While I would prefer something like .270 or '06, if all I had was a .223 I was used to & knew I'd take that over a bigger gun that I wasn't so familiar with, every day of the week. It's ALL about shot placement. Everything else & I mean EVERYTHING else is a secondary consideration. You gotta remember, even with pin-point-perfect placement, not every deer is going to dump on the spot (although the Sportsman (sic) Channel would have you believe this) Use good quality bullets that are going to expand properly, learn where to shoot a deer from all angles & keep your shots to distances you're 100% comfortable with & you'll be fine.
-
It's on the light side, but if you put it in the heart or lungs, it'll certainly do the trick! Probably not a guaranteed dead-on-the-spot round, but with 4 holes in the lungs, most deer ain't going far.

Very pretty buck. Congrats man!

Here's a couple of quick snaps I took on Saturday morning. No kill pic for me I'm afraid...... And a third photo a good friend of mine sent me this morning. The gun in the picture is an English Sporting Rifle I built out of factory spares I had kicking around & took him last week, the knife is also one that I built him in trade for an Osage longbow he built me. I doubt I could be happier if I'd shot this 8 myself!.....

I managed to shave chest hair off of a fat doe at 40yds at 8:45. Luckily she had company in the form of a button buck. He caught a ball through the shoulders at 86 paces. Go figure! I always miss the easy ones!

Are You Self Conscious About Guns & Fingerprints
Handsome Rob replied to runco's topic in General Chat
I'm more concerned about the latent prints that could be recovered from the tinfoil of my previously discarded helmets. -
It's probably overkill, but i also leave the slide locked open & safety plug in the breech, just to be 100% sure.
-
I'm in the same boat. Personally I keep my Glock in the factory box in the cab of the truck, boxes of ammo + magazines are in an ammo box in the bed/toolbox.

So looking at buying my first tree stand.
Handsome Rob replied to Mdunntn's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Well put it this way, I've spent waaaaaay more time asleep in my titan than I'd like to admit to. I'm primarily a longbow hunter & I find the bar gets in my way, so i switched to a lone wolf hand climber, but from the opening day of M/L season thru rifle season, the summit is the placed to be. I can climb very quickly & quietly & you've got to be terminally retarded to be able to have an accident in it. Other then the driver's seat of my truck, it's the most comfortable seat i own. -
FTFY. Boat. Verb. "A hole in the water you keep pouring money into"
-
Yep. TN does not title boats. All you need to register the boat in your name is a bill of sale.

Count me in please!

Couple of things, yes, if black powder itself gets wet, it will make a very, very mild sulfuric acid, however once burnt, it's totally inert. It IS hygroscopic though, & will attract moisture out of the air. Substitutes (And this goes for ALL substitutes) contain volatile perchlorates which are activated upon ignition. Now these WILL rust a barrel VERY quickly if not cleaned up soon after shooting. More barrels have been wrecked since Pyrodex/Trip 7/ etc... came out than ever were with real black powder. The subs also need magnum primers, at least, to ignite consistently. The Blackhorn 209 (the clue is in the name) really needs 209 shotgun primers to ignite properly & reliably. You can buy Goex black powder from any Bass-Pro. You'll need to ask for it at the gun counter, it's not on the shelves. If you need more in future, you can mail-order it in 5lb quantities from powders inc. in Arkansas. The more you buy, the cheaper it gets. You technically can make your own & it's not at all difficult to get a 'black powder' but to get a good, reliable, consistent powder takes a lot of practice & some fairly specialized equipment. It's handy chemistry to know, but in the real world, completely useless.

So this is what a 1250 dolar glock looks like
Handsome Rob replied to jcoosi's topic in General Chat
Does it come with a hooker & kilo of blow? -
Middle-light end of the lightweight scale. 1wt is really ultralight & then you move onto Tenkara for a while until the lure of ever decreasing fish sizes grabs you & you take up Tanago fishing, where a size 24 hook would be considered huge & line weight is measured in ounces or even grams!
-
It's exactly like 5wt fishing, only smaller! Same flies, same techniques, just smaller, lighter gear. I generally fish a 5X or smaller tippet & flies from size 16s down to 24s. You'll fish a much shorter cast too, most of my fishing is done at 20' or less. I also found that a furled thread leader, rather than a mono taper makes presentation a lot more precise & aids in casting. The biggest thing I've landed on my 3wt so far is a 6lb bass. 6X tippet & IIRC a size 16 Royal Wulff. I remember it being the fight of my life!
-
I picked up a really nice 3wt Lefty Kreh setup late last year. Honestly, since I stared fishing it I don't think I've touched my 5wt more than once or twice. I'll tell you, a nice sized Bluegill on a through-action rod, ultralight furled leader & 7X tippet is about as much fun as you can have! It turns a 2 minute tussle into a 5 minute deathmatch! I've never been happier catching little 8-10" Brookies & Brownies than I am on this setup. The Elk near me doesn't seem to hold many bigger fish, so I figured I may as well get the maximum amount of grins from catching the tiddlers (Although I seem to remembering be able to thread a size 22 hook a lot easier 20 years ago!)
