Just to clarify, I like Sig pistols alot. They are a fine firearm. I was trying to keep in mind the original request for advice on what is best for a starter for as cheap as possible. We all know you start with a $300 gun and then the addiction kicks in. And before you know it you have a safe full of guns you don't get to shoot half as much as you'd like and enough ammunition to feed a small revolution.

I have owned and shot all 3. A 9mm Sigma was my first handgun. Shot great with no problems, but the trigger sucked. I didn't realize the trigger sucked until I got my second pistol, a Ruger P95. Polished the sear on the Sigma which helped, but traded it later anyhow. I had a P2022 with Crimson Trace grips. Good shooter. I have owned 5 Sig pistols now, including a Scorpion 1911. I still say Sig Sauer is overpriced. P226 is a great shooter, but not $800 great. I am a die hard SA/DA fan. I love Berettas for that reason. The Ruger P series pistols have the decocker feature, and for that reason I say get the Ruger. That and they shoot really good. They are a bulky pistol, but if this isn't going to be your carry gun, it doesn't matter and you will score well with it during your permit test.

What about a black rifle that isn't all black....

See, to me, wood furniture on an AR looks plain stupid. I didn't know if bare aluminum on an AR would fall into the same category. -

I am very suprised guys. I honestly didn't expect a positive response on the machined aluminum look. Could this be the next big thing???? Lol. -

I need ideas on where to mill on the lower so it will match the upper if I am going to leave it bare. I have some internal milling to do, but the outside will need some bling to match the upper. Thoughts??? -

Those smooth side uppers are THICK! dub....thanks I will post a pic when I put it back together, DaddyO.....lol, oh it will still be evil. Lager....I would consider it. What kind of upper do you have now? poak... I have done a Taurus and a Sigma stainless slide and they looked really good. -

Now of course the rest of the rifle will be all black. Magpul furniture. Aimpoint optics. And the lower won't have as much shiny aluminum as the upper when its done. I don't know, for some reason I think it kinda looks cool. I mean we want polished stainless 1911s, and polished stainless revolvers. I have a fully polished Ruger 10/22. Granted the AR is not a show piece, so no polished finish for her, but machined finish is rugged and industrial looking. And by the way, because I know it will be asked. This rifle will be possibly used for an entry 3 gun rifle. I'm still kinda toying with the idea of getting into that. Otherwise it will be nice to have a light rifle my son and wife can enjoy shooting... -

Alright. So I recently picked up a DPMS Sportical AR. Got it for a great price and was kind of interested in having a lighter carbine. I have a Ruger SR556 that is loaded up, awesome rifle, but heavy. So. I get the DPMS and break it down to inspect and being the guy I am realize this will never do. Even though the upper receiver is shy of several attributes, it is also very thick walled, and close to normal weight. Being a self employed tool and die maker has its perks. I took it upon myself to put the upper on a diet. And now I plan on relieving a few areas on the lower as well(Pmags are way too tight). So that brings me to the part about black rifles and them having to be black. What if I dont Durocaot, paint, re-anodize, etc. the receivers and just leave them as is. Heaven forbid an AR have a shiny spot on it right???

Having two lowers gives you the great opportunity to build rifles for specific purposes. Say a light 16" carbine with iron sights and/or a no magnification red dot. These set ups are sooo fun shooting close quarters. And then a 20" or 24" HBAR with a high magnification scope and a bipod to shoot long range. Alot of folks forget just how flat 5.56 shoots. Of course, things always get complicated. Nobody has even mentioned a piston upper with a suppressor yet...lol.

the beauty of building an AR is the fact you have so many options. That's why you'll find yourself with more than one. I agree with the others about getting mil spec parts. As far as a lower goes, you want forged. But the name and pretty picture on the side is purly what you "like". It is just a chunk of aluminum, it's what you put in it that matters.

I plan on going to watch.

Best scopes in the $200-$400 range?
2006Blackpearl931 replied to SKINDOG's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Redfield. 100% american made by machinist like me. Owned by Leupold. Excellent optics. And a 4-12x40 mil dot is only $219 -
Very nice. You will love the Vortex on that short barrel once you add optics.

Pictoral showing different lengths of AR15 quad rails
2006Blackpearl931 replied to TGO David's topic in Long Guns
The easiest way to solve the problem of deciding which rail length you like best: Build mutiple ARs and use all available lenghts for you barrel preference. Sounds good in theory doesn't it! -
So yesterday I finally got an event put together. I've been wanting to hold my own event for a few friends for quite awhile now. Altogether there were 8 of us. Which is good for learning purposes. I invited 10, so 7 showing is actually better than I expected. Now of course I wanted this to be as safe as possible. I had course guidelines we all followed. A few things I learned from a friend of mine that is in the know, such as grounding weapons, and range master calls. Anyhow, we had 3 stages. Two pistol, one rifle. I set up targets at various heights and depths, and had obstructions to shoot around and manuever through while shooting for the pistol stages. The rifle stage was set up for .22s. We had 3 irons to hit and 2 paper targets at 50 yards. We timed each other and scored, using official IDPA targets. Everything went great. We all had a blast, burned alot of powder and most importantly, nobody put holes in anything that wasn't suppose to get holes in it. Only thing is, you wish you had 5 times as much stuff setup after you run the course the first time. Truly alot of fun!

I was looking on the RK and don't see any events planned for Murfreesboro the rest of this year. Just wondering if they don't have dates set, or don't plan to have shows there. Anybody got any info?

11:23 pm home defense
2006Blackpearl931 replied to 2006Blackpearl931's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The door we have now is a interior solid panel door. I want to replace it with a exterior type with a window. Energy conservation and security upgrade. I took me a nap this afternoon. that should help. As a side note. My six year old son is fascinated by the whole thing and made sure to tell everybody at school today. He told my wife that if I needed any help he could tote the shotgun. Crazy kid... -

Of course, if anybody can chime in and tell me how to get a good nights rest after that, please do.... -
So, we have an alarm on our house. Last night at 11:23 I woke to the alarm ringing at full bore. Now my wife and I have gone over best home defense straegies. We have two kids. First step is to confirm the kids are alright. Second step is to take a position that I know I can advance from without fear of getting jumped from behind. To make a long story short, I jumped up, grabbed my PT92 and chambered a Golden Sabre. Took position at the end of the hall where I could check on the kids. Proceded to sweep the house from there, only using my weapon mounted light in burst going room to room. Come to the door where the kitchen goes to the garage and it's open. Hit the garage lights and enter only to find nothing. Turns out my teenage daughter didn't comepletely shut the door and the high winds somehow pushed it open, even with the garage doors closed, this has happened a couple other times, but not when the alarm was set. We will be getting a new door in the next few days now by the way. Anyhow, point is. While my wife is on the phone with the security people, I did exactly what I had trained myself to do. Adreneline pumping and all. So my advice is, if you do not have a home defense plan. get one. And practice it. Don't be the guy with a pistol fummbling in the dark while some thug is in your house with his own pistol and the upper hand of suprise. You be the suprise.
