Its going to depend on who made it and what type of ammo is used and so on. I have a couple of guns that still make amazing groups with many thousands of rounds down them. My makarov has digested at least 5 orders of 1000 rounds, at least 500 reloads, and then there is the "box at a gunshow" here and there over the past 15 years or so... and it can still hit the black part of a 25 yard slowfire target at 25 yards, and if it does not, its the shooter. My ruger mark 2 was bought used and easily it has 200 rounds per week average last year alone. It also still groups up as well as it ever did. Most of my other guns have a lot less through them but even those have 1-2k in some cases. I have never even seen the slightest bit of wear in any of these barrels during cleaning or whatever. I think your poll answers are not very helpful, and also would say that 9/10 barrels that have gone bad have done so due to either the crown being beat to death from physical abuse of the gun or from shooting some sort of ammo that was hard on it, perhaps corrosive, or shotshell in a rifled barrel, or other stressful things (super hot reloads or defense ammo in bulk?).

I have a remington 1100, a plastic stock gun that cost me like 250 used and that included 2 barrels and a cheap red dot sight on one of em. The classic browning A5 is the original design I think and like the 1911 every company since 1900 or so has copied it, and unless you find some really bad off brand junker most of these guns are reliable. I also had several of the brownings (downsized to just 1 of them now) but unless you find one that looks like it was dragged behind a truck it will be out of your price range. The only real issue with them is the rock bottom cheapest ammo may not cycle the action on some guns, as the cheap ammo is often weaker. The RIO brand is fairly cheap and fairly stout, and a good place to start. By the way, they work almost the exact same as a pump. When you strip an A5 type design, you can actually "pump" the gun by grabbing the internals. The design is brilliant, because it is very simple.

WOULD ANYONE BE INTERESTED IN A GET TOGETHER IN BLOUNT COUNTY?
Jonnin replied to a topic in Events and Gatherings
maybe. Its a long way to go, but doable, it would depend on the date, weather, and wife. I cannot commit but we might go. -
Its hard but try to not confuse ballistics with effectiveness. Ballistics is the study of the round from the time it exits the muzzle to the time it stops moving. Effectiveness is not even scientific, its a bunch of voodoo because the only "testing" done that matters are actual gunfights and the data is sketchy due to privacy laws or evidence rules and other reasons. Once in a while the government allows a cadaver test but try to lay your hands on THAT data... The ballistics of the .45 in a standard 230 grain are about like a bow and arrow, and effective at about the same ranges. That is not an insult, or saying that it is not effective, its just a description of what happens when you lob a fat, heavy blob of metal at a low velocity.

The primary and the presidential election are totally different. I never said they cannot vote for who is president. Take a look again at the news this past month. It is basically a showdown of which "conservative" candidate can win in the liberal state primary races. When is the last time we had a week long shindig over which one is winning the Texas or TN or Alaskan or whatever primary? Nope, not a word, its all about the big yankee state primary elections. Something is WRONG with that. Take today's news. Its all about New Hampshire --- which is about 60% liberal and has an insignificant number of electoral college votes to boot. Yet the news is playing it up as if this were the biggest thing to happen since the all week long recounts for W. Last month it was Iowa, which is about the same -- mostly liberal and not having a game changing amount of EC votes. I know this is because they vote first, but it has too much effect on the GOP candidates and their desire to drop out or stay in, etc. It pushes the most liberal candidates to the top. I think this is not in the interest of the GOP.

45 corbon 165 gr, 5 inches... 1230 muzzle energy. 357 158 gr federal, 5 inches, 1370 ME If you put the same bullet weight in them they are pretty darn close, if you throw in a +- 50 foot pounds across different brands of ammo. 10mm 165 corbon 5 inch barrel is 1260, also pretty close. A 44 mag out of a 5 inch and 165gr is also in the 1250s. As noted many times, energy is heavily tied to velocity so comparing the heaviest slug you can find, moving at a low velocity, is not going to match up well on an energy chart. Energy is not a good way to compare calibers: one of the .22 LR rounds in a 6 inch barrel comes in at 1250 muzzle energy, is that about the same as the others?! No, it just has a very high velocity, that is all an energy comparison means. *Data points borrowed from ballistics by the inch.

I really like a semi auto. Most of those can be modified to hold 8-10 shots of regular 12ga which is a substantial weapon. There are pros and cons to pump vs auto but consider both. Also walk thru your home with something as big as the shotgun you are looking at --- some homes are just too cramped for running around with a big old bird gun and you may need to look into a pistol grip one (which can have brutal recoil) or a short barrel one (which makes putting an extended magazine tube on it less than effective, you may only get 5 shots with that setup). You can get a lot of gun for that money, if you go for used.

Ammo is getting hard to find for them, so I have passed on buying one. I do not need any more exotic calibers to feed.

If, for any reason, you ever want to get your blood REALLY boiling...
Jonnin replied to Steelharp's topic in General Chat
Yes some time ago FB made it so you have to have a log in and BE logged in to see anything at all. Part of their insecurity strategy I think? Sort of lame, really, as a lot of company web sites now are on FB or at least partially. One of these days I am going to have to make a fake login just so I can see the occasional item. -
Its not a gender issue... its a new shooter issue. Lot of men who have not been around guns prefer a more gentle starter once the thrill of making a loud noise wears off and the goal of actually hitting the target becomes of interest. At that point plenty of men move to a .22 or gentle 9 to work on their skills. Almost every guy I have introduced to shooting has wanted to try one of my .44s. None of them have wanted to use that to work on accuracy or technique. And once the reality of the cost of ammo hits home, most do end up using a .22 more often than not.

Haha you are correct, it is rimless. I wonder what on earth I was thinking about this morn. I know I have shot something in that neighborhood that was rimmed, but it escapes me for the moment.

What gun did you use to take your carry permit class?
Jonnin replied to blizzard's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I did it with my makarov. At that time, it was one of the few semi-autos I owned and ammo for it was like $5 a box. -
The desert eagle 357 from IMI is a single action 1911ish design. They are much different internally of course, but frame style and trigger pull and overall shooting feel are similar. Come to think of it, if it has the bushing and grip safety, the 1911 may be a step backwards (/duck). I would buy it, though, if I could hold one and it passed the pick-up test. I think I would by a 9mm 1911 first, and if this new one were a double stack 44 it would very, very hard for me to pass up. I have never had any trouble with rimmed cases in an auto, 22s work find, my 44 works fine, those I have shot a LOT and have tried the 50 and 357 as well but do not own those. I know the rim makes it a challenge to design, but the pistols I have tried all do pretty well. Oh and 30-06 is rimmed, shot that in a semi as well as a couple of other rifle rounds.

If you get a chance try out a 1911 in 9mm. I would also list the beretta 92 as a must shoot, at least 1 generic sized glock, and maybe a CZ 75 or the EAA clone, or (unlikely to find) a cz Rami.

as for shooting a 9 in a 40 --- in a lot (most??) of guns, the extractor claw is strong enough to hold a "close" round in place long enough for the firing pin to hit it. For example you *can* fire a 380 in a 9mm this way, though it will sometimes get hosed up due to the claw not holding it (bullet slides on in the chamber), cannot cycle the gun of course, and may jam up due to the short case length. But it will work often enough for those who are intent on screwing something up to get a few shots off. It is probably possible for a .40 to hold a 9mm in place well enough to do the same thing, if someone were determined to make it happen. The diameter is not THAT different and all it takes is one good hit on the primer, even the edge of it. Its 1mm bigger around, if that, and a primer is about 1mm wide, so it should be possible to nick the edge of it in some guns under some circumstances.

awesome, thanks for the big list! I stopped looking some time ago after trying 6 or 7 with no luck, most had at the most a few targets and a small ammo shelf that no one has a key for.

The GOP allows states that should have next to zero input vote for nomination. The GOP choice will be the one that got a lot of votes in CA, NY, IL, etc and then that candidate will not carry those states but will be a less conservative choice due to the tainted primary process. If a state has not swung for the GOP in the last 5 elections, they should not contribute to the primary, IMHO.

which walmart has guns, one in cleveland? None of the chattanooga ones I have looked at do... ?

I did not stick a magnet on any of them but they are too heavy for alum. Now, our colt is partially alum, and I don't think you will see a lot of people saying the gold trophy is a bad firearm.... but pretty sure the ria is steel.

If it has wood stocks that seems fair. Plastic, I would say $500. Its age is not really going to bump the price up by much to my knowledge (feel free to correct me if anyone knows otherwise) --- and those seem to be about the going prices for used regardless of year of make (?).

I really liked kicking the empire out, but mostly that was because by the time I did it I had an olavin (spelling?) to help. For the content the mages college is turning out nice, just now doing that on the new guy, and the companions is my current set on the high level one. Oddly though my old toon is an assassin I didnt mess with DB, I am more of a morag tong guy and they are sadly missing.

Santorum and his views on our privacy rights
Jonnin replied to Under-No-Pretext's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
This is why I do not like ANY of the goons running for the GOP this time around. I will vote for one of them because there is no real choice, but they all suck including the ones that dropped out. Half of them do not understand separation of church and state (which, even if not in the constitution, is a very important concept to our country), at least 2 of them think global warming (or cooling or climate change or whatever it is this week) is real, several of them are anti gun, at least 3 of them have no clue about how to fix the economy and/or manage foreign policy, and none of them are fit to lead the USA to greatness. At least one of them may be mentally unstable and one more may actually BE stupid (not just playing it up but actually not too bright). -
Its too big to hold so few rounds, same as others said. A neat twist on the old 2 shot derringer, but I would not want to be caught in a situation with just that. Maybe as a backup to your backup... a nice piece to put in a very small secret container in your car or office or something I guess.

had knife stolen and am looking for advice on replacement
Jonnin replied to a topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
You can find good condition used k-bars made in the USA and often milsurp at places that deal in milsurp, or gun shows. I do not know what such things cost but if you want the real thing an older model is the way to go. I am not sure about that exact model, it may be much harder to find one of those than the standard military knife. -
I decided to try a pure mage so I started one sunday and played it off and on all day. I think it is playable, some thoughts, since most of the online guides are either "how to exploit" or very ignorant about the game mechanics: 1) Its going to be harder early on, as you must choose between being defenseless (robes etc) and powerful or weak but in armor. The best option early on seems to be 3 perks in summoned weapons, see below, rather than trying to "flame thrower" everything to death. 2) You pretty much are going to HAVE to study enchanting and alchemy to around 50% or better. Its nice on anyone but enchanting to reduce casting costs so you can put points into health instead of magic is going to make or break the build, and alchemy to provide stacks and stacks of healing potions (you do not want to burn your magic power to heal in combat!) and magic potions (unless you studied combat stuff, you are defenseless without them if drained or run out). 3) Once you can enchant regular armor (and jewelery) to have the "mage robe" bonuses, you should be very powerful. Taking it all the way up to have a set of destruction/conjuration armor would be a big winner. I think trying to use the "stoneskin" type spells instead of armor is making life hard on yourself, these are nice spells but armor does not expire halfway into a fight with a dragon & get you killed. Also, using only robes means no heavy/light/block training which would give you levels. 4) I think you are expected to summon a zombie or elemental guy to help, which is probably why destruction damage is a bit low for damage output. 5) Not 100% sure but I think a "revived" enemy (zombie!) has the powers it had when alive, so endgame those are probably more powerful than the elementals, though I think you can summon a daedra maybe later (?). Not sure which type is best though you can use a zombie as a pack mule at higher levels. 6) Conjuration to get summoned, high quality, soul stealing weapons is also going to be important. The sword does very high damage at low levels, about like ebony (?) maybe, and fills your gems to study enchanting easier, and rapidly unlocks your ability to summon a powerful ally. End game the weapons probably fall behind but by then you have been rewarded 10 times over from using them at the start as you earned many levels off one handed weapon use, enchanting, and conjuration all at once, and probably some armor/block as well. 7) You probably want to use the exploit/bug/feature/???? of illusion that makes fire damage bigger, aspect of terror perk. This makes dual casting the flames spell do some 50+ damage per second, maybe more... 8) Lightning is probably the best damage type (apart from the above illusion trick?), almost nothing resists it and the long range attacks do not have to "travel" so its easier to hit your target. Definitely the hardest playstyle. Without some use of arms and armor (IE using robes and shield spells), I would say it would be a major challenge. With armor, it is still going to be rough: you will have lower health than most, weaker damage, and always be vulnerable to running out of magic in a long battle (there are a few). Astronach stone bonus lets you absorb a lot of things, including dragon breath and hits from magical weapons. That is probably the choice to make once you no longer need the lover/mage/warrior/thief stones.
