We always called him Stumpy. Little funny on him, he drove down from Tomah, Wi twice to visit, stayed a week both times. I asked him if he was ever wounded. He said once. I asked where, he said like Forrest Gump. In the buttocks, LOL. He left the Army, awarded the CMOH, and the Army talked him into coming back. He did, and they put him in recruiting. He hated that, asked to go back to his old unit in 'Nam. Wish granted. Stayed in & Retired after 29 yrs as Sargent Major.

My squad leader in 'Nam, Kenneth E. Stumpf, a Medal of Honor recipient, has final stage pancreatic cancer. His son called me, said the dr. gave him 2 weeks. After I was severely wounded, he came in and got me out under fire, along with 2 other guys. I probably would have bled out if not for that. Hell of a guy & soldier. Heavy heart. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Typical athlete / entertainer, that thinks the world can't survive without him. Ego!!

Standard procedure for a Defense atty to go for mentally incompetent when he has nothing else to hang his hat on. With that much painstaking prep, he was playing with a full deck. Personally, it doesn't matter to me if he was nuttier than a fruit cake, get the same punishment as anyone else. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. JMO

It could also put pressure on the DA to not bring charges in a case of this type, clearly self defense, rather that bow to political pressure, media, etc. Personally, I hope it passes.

The old Central State mental hospital years ago, was replaced in 1995 by Mid Tenn Mental hospital. When I was a Corrections Officer in the Trousdale Co. lockup from 2003 thru 2006, I've had to transport inmates there as well as Cumberland Mental health in Lebanon. Male & female. An inmate having issues would have the crisis team come in for an evaluation, if needed, then sent to one of the above institutions. Usually they could only keep them 30 days, then sent back to the jail. The County caught the brunt of the problem. I've had to talk some that were suicidal down out of their tree. One in particular had a bad day in court, came back tried to hang himself. Managed to avoid that. Build more institutions? Costs big buck, taxpayers don't want to pay for it, that simple. Not a popular thing for a politician to bring before the Legislature. This is complicated in so many ways. It's not likely to change. My.02 cts
