Wasn't sure where to post this...

I am a 22 year old college student that rents an apartment. My parents still claim me as a dependent on their tax forms. Are they legally responsible for me if I buy a gun for hunting, if I have all of the proper licenses? I work and pay my own bills, but because I am full-time they still claim me. My mom is convinced she is responsible and won't let me get a gun.

Geez what a stupid question.

No, I'm kidding. It's a good question.

The answer is that once you turn 21 your parents arent responsible for you regardless of their support. Of course they can always threaten to withold support if you buy the gun since they aren't obligated to you.

And needless to say, there is some attorney out there who could probably make the case they were because they have more money than you. But that's a very remote possibility that would only come into play if you did something incredibly dumb.

Sounds like you need to engage in some salesmanship with your mother to demonstrate your trustworthiness.

Legally, you can do whatever you want. You can buy a rifle, shotgun, handgun, whatever, but...if it upsets momma, she doesn't have to pay for your college or your rent. She cannot, however, keep you from buying a gun or go hunting. The dependent thing is an IRS regulation and the gun laws are federal and state laws. As a matter of fact, you could have bought a long gun when you were 18, that is what I did back in 1980.

Wouldn't want to upset my mother but at 22, I think I would cut the apron strings and man up a little.

And so you are going to show her a thread on a gun forum with a bunch of gun nuts saying that momma don’t have jack to say about it; and this will convince her?

BTW.... Momma will always be boss.
