Petroleum oils and distillates tend to eat rubber. One of the reasons you don't use petroleum jelly with condoms. Any other ideas?

Condoms are made of latex rubber.

O-rings are made of elastomer (Elastic Polymer).

Pag oil and Ester oil is used in A\C systems where o-rings are used at every fitting to ensure the high pressure refrigerant and oil does not leak.

They actually contain additives that will 'fluff' up an o-ring.

Regular motor oils also commonly contain o-ring additives too,FWIW.

If it works to keep o-rings in good working condition under the high pressures of an A\C system, I think it will do just fine for a flashlight o ring. :stick:

From my former life, I can say this: I put rubber bushings in automotive springs. Our manufactures DENIED warrantee if we used oil to insert them. We had use liquid hand soap.

A quick google search revealed that bushings are made of synthetic rubber or polyurethane.

O-rings are made of Elastomer.

Now, I'm no rubber expert, but as far as oil deteriorating rubber, I think that depends on the grade of rubber and whats it's constructed of.

There's lots of rubber on a cars motor that comes in direct contact with oils and grease...

yes I realize this has been done before but it has been a few months, and I figured with all the new people such as myself that it could be interesting. Also, the last time someone tried to do this everyone turned it into a debate about smartcarry. So lets give it another shot. I will get us started.

My current set-up:

SW1911ES in a Comp-Tac Minotaur. Loaded in the gun are Federal HSTs. I carry a back-up mag with ball ammo. Also carry a phone, wallet, and keys.

I love this gun. It was a "back to school" present I got myself. This particular one is a S&W 1911ES. It has an officer sized frame and a commander length barrel (4.25"). In my opinion it's the perfect size for carry. You get the compact gun feel but still retain a good sight radius with the longer barrel. A lot of people poo-poo about external extractors on a 1911, but from what I've seen S&W has gotten the bugs out and now they are just as good as the internal extractors (just going off of other people's reports). This one has performed perfect so far.

awesome thanks. I have shot a few Kimbers and fell in love but I'm just not ready to shell out that much $$ for a gun. Also I hear mixed reports about reliability.

This is what I am normally carrying everyday.

The Benchmade is about to be replaced; it has been totally abused. I don't carry the Microtech around town, but I do carry it while I am in GA at work. I still don't understand TN knife laws. I can carry a gun, but not an automatic knife. I usually alternate between which watch I wear. It is usually either my Omega Seamaster or Omega X-33 (my favorite watch).
