Feral Hogs in the GSMNP: FYI

I turn your attention to this thread on the blog Whitebalze.net (if allowed by the moderators for xposting.)

The general theme of the thread is dealing feral hogs in the GSMNP. After an encounter with a big boar, I needed to solve the issue of accessibility while hiking.

There are some pics of the holster (#31) I made to solve the problem. Really works well. It all started when mice ate thru the webbing on my hip belt but led to other ideas on solving the problem.

go to the link to whiteblaze.net. there are pics...

To repeat what buck1032 is saying, you must register on whiteblaze to see attachments. If you had put the images inline (the only way to do pix on TGO) we could see them.

If you want to email them to me, I'll post them in this thread.

I PM'd you my email addy.

sorry for the lack of availability of the pics. I originally misunderstood. I have had some volunteer help and they should be posted here soon (thanks Ohshoot).

I did not broach the subject on Whiteblaze but what I have is a 40SW with 145gn solid copper Barnes bullets. I think the brand is DPX.

OhShoot, be careful with that bullet selection, as i believe they are illegal in Tn. It is my understanding that a bullet used in this state must have a lead core.

Can you cite any legislation that requires this?

I wonder if he is thinking of the hunting regulations that forbid the use of an FMJ or other 'military type' or 'non-expanding' bullet for hunting. If so, I don't think that applies to SD (even from critters) - and the solid copper Barnes bullet is an 'expanding' bullet, anyhow.

I looked up the issue of bullet type on the TWRA website and it does prohibit FMJ type bullets for hunting. Since I am not hunting and really don't want a confrontation and the Barnes bullets are HP, I see no problem.

I read it in a TCA book, at work last year so I may be mistaken. I will try to find it tomorrow night at work and post it.

*OhShoot- sorry I started to post and a drunk came in, I should have reverified. Apologies my good sir!

No worries.

The only ammo prohibitions I'm aware of are:

- no FMJ for hunting big game (TN law)

- no explosive ammo (TN law, perhaps federal also?)

- no armor piercing ammo in handguns (which I think is federal law only?)

I took all last week off to spend time with the family. Had a cabin in Townsend and did two hikes and three bike rides in the park. It was a busy week since we also did Dollywood and some PF tourist stuff as well. Didn't see any pigs but had 1 bear near our cabin and we were about 10 yards from another this morning. We were on bikes and I was pulling two (sleeping) small kids behind me in a trailer. I keep telling the wife I'm more concerned about boars or wacky people than bears, but she's not so sure. We saw an absolute ton of deer, several, wild turkeys, and a few river otters in the wild, in addition to the bears. I gotta say that the boars are one wild animal that I hope not to see with the wife and kids.

**didn't mean to hijack the thread, just make an observation about the gear carried**

Okay guys I've found it 2010 edition TCA is 39-17-1301 (13)

"Restricted firearm ammunition" means any cartridge containing a bullet coated with a plastic substance with other than a lead or lead alloy core or a jacketed bullet with other than a lead or lead alloy core or a cartridge of which the bullet itself is wholly compose of a metal or metal alloy other than lead. "Restricted firearm ammunition" does not include shotgun shells or solid plastic bullets;

Yes, that's in the definitions part of the weapons section, but the only place I see that refers to "restricted firearm ammunition" in the actual statutory prohibitions is for possession or use of same while committing a crime of violence. (39-17-1304)

Which means to me it's okay for use for any lawful purpose, up to and including justified deadly force.

I think it's the "cop killer bullets" thing.
