Romney made a great speech tonight that sounds like he can unify the R party and America. Any thoughts about Romney's speech tonight?

It was a good speech and Romney is a good campaigner. If he can stick to that message he'll have a chance.

The rough part will be that Obama is also excellent at campaigning.

Politics are an emotion based business and, from an objective point of view, people will be able to learn a lot from this election. Moderate versus moderate doesn't sound interesting on paper but this will be worthwhile.

You are mistaken if you think Obama is a moderate; how about a Marxist/socialist liberal.

Didn't hear it. Un-muted the tv for a few minutes to hear hannity and all his friends raving about how inspirational it was. Bleh. Whatever. Going on a policy of vote out the incumbent, Romney is the only game in town. Frying pan to fire. Fire to frying pan. Rinse and repeat.

Romney Impresses

Mitt Romney swept five Republican primaries today–no surprise there. He gave a terrific speech tonight in the wake of those victories. I caught it on Fox News. Romney was introduced by his wife Ann, which prompts this observation: First Ladies are like vice-presidential nominees; they do not swing any significant number of votes. What they can do is contribute, in a subtle way, to the overall image of the ticket. Sort of like the vermouth in a martini. Recognizing that very limited role, Ann Romney is a phenomenon. She is a tremendously skilled performer in her own right. If we think back to the First Ladies and would-be First Ladies of recent years, we find no parallel: they range from the only-seen-if-necessary, like Teresa Heinz Kerry, to the positive and presentable but reluctant, like Laura Bush. Ann Romney ranks above them all, in my opinion. In her own right, she coulda been a contender.

Sorry if I got carried away. Here are some excerpts from Romney’s speech, as emailed to supporters tonight. Comments to follow:

After 43 primaries and caucuses, many long days and not a few long nights, I can say with confidence – and gratitude – that you have given me a great honor and solemn responsibility. And, together, we will win on November 6th!

We launched this campaign not far from here on a beautiful June day. It has been long and extraordinarily rewarding.

Americans have always been eternal optimists. But over the last three and a half years, we have seen hopes and dreams diminished by false promises and weak leadership. Everywhere I go, Americans are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less.

For every single mom who feels heartbroken when she has to explain to her kids that she needs to take a second job … for every grandparent who can’t afford the gas to visit his or her grandchildren … for the mom and dad who never thought they’d be on food stamps … for the small business owner desperately cutting back just to keep the doors open one more month – to all of the thousands of good and decent Americans I’ve met who want nothing more than a better chance, a fighting chance, to all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.

…

Four years ago Barack Obama dazzled us in front of Greek columns with sweeping promises of hope and change. But after we came down to earth, after the celebration and parades, what do we have to show for three and a half years of President Obama?

Is it easier to make ends meet? Is it easier to sell your home or buy a new one? Have you saved what you needed for retirement? Are you making more in your job? Do you have a better chance to get a better job? Do you pay less at the pump?

If the answer were “yes†to those questions, then President Obama would be running for re-election based on his achievements–and rightly so. But because he has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions, and distortions. That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time. But not here and not now. It’s still about the economy…and we’re not stupid.

…

I see an America with a growing middle class, with rising standards of living. I see children even more successful than their parents – some successful even beyond their wildest dreams – and others congratulating them for their achievement, not attacking them for it.

This America is fundamentally fair. We will stop the unfairness of urban children being denied access to the good schools of their choice; the unfairness of politicians giving taxpayer money to their friends’ businesses; the unfairness of requiring union workers to contribute to politicians not of their choosing; the unfairness of government workers getting better pay and benefits than the taxpayers they serve; and we will stop the unfairness of one generation passing larger and larger debts on to the next.

In the America I see, character and choices matter. And education, hard work, and living within our means are valued and rewarded. And poverty will be defeated, not with a government check, but with respect and achievement that is taught by parents, learned in school, and practiced in the workplace.

This is the America that was won for us by the nation’s Founders, and earned for us by the Greatest Generation. It is the America that has produced the most innovative, most productive, and most powerful economy in the world, with one of the highest standards of living of any major nation.

romney-nh-speech-424.jpg.pagespeed.ce.JaRBW9hPAi.jpgRomney also talked about his father, who once sold paint out of the trunk of his car and never graduated from college, but became the head of an automobile company and the Governor of Michigan. Romney’s themes strike me as exactly right: Obama has been a failure; America deserves better; the strength of America lies in its private sector; we need to return to the opportunity society that the Founders envisioned and that reigned as recently as a decade ago.

As I watch Mitt Romney, this thought also occurs to me: Romney is sometimes criticized as “inauthentic,†but this is radically incorrect. As a politician, he has had to tack with the winds from time to time, like anyone else. But as a person, Romney is hugely authentic. His persona is no mystery: he is a Dad. We have all known men like Mitt Romney. We may think they are square and out of date; we may roll our eyes if they are occasionally goofy. But when times are tough, in moments of crisis, everyone knows where to turn: we look to leaders of character, competence and decency, like Mitt Romney. I am increasingly confident that in November, Americans will see Mitt Romney as just what we need after four years of Barack Obama’s incompetence.

Don't see how anyone could see Obama, and for that matter the leadership of the Democratic Party, as "moderate". He is a Socialists of the Europen tradition and the leadereship is so Progressive minded that they are willing to put anyone in office that will further their idea that only the "educated elite" should govern.

Yep, that's an emotionally based statement in an attempt to sound like the so called "independant" voice. :shake: Reality of facts - not the refered to emotional campaing sloguns - Obama is far from a moderate anything. ;)

Romney will be the Republican candidate. We can only hope that he will do better than McCain.

If you trust Romeny, you are ignorant, stupid, or evil. His track record is entirely different than his rhetoric. He is a big-spending, big-government liberal. the best thing that can be said about him is that he is better than Obama. That's a VERY low standard to beat.

But...but...he's explaaaaained all that in his campaign speeches. He explaaaaained that, even though he backed Romneycare as governor that isn't what he wants for the entire country. He explaaaained his past record of voting against gun rights in a campaign speech to the NRA. Surely everything will be okay and everyone should be throwing rose petals at his feet now that he has explaaaained it all. After all, politicians never lie when they explaaaaaain such things in their campaign speeches, right?

I suggest that anyone who believes that the community organizing commie has done an outstanding job as President, and that you trust him for four more years to lead this nation, then go ahead and vote for him. If that is not the case, then now is the time to get united behind Romney to defeat the Commie.

The decision is pretty simple; you either believe in the commie and want America to become a Socailist/Communist nation, or you put more faith in a successful businessman, and only a 4 year person of government service (governor of Mass.) . Each has distinguishing biographies; one is pretty vague and unclear and un-American, and the other is pretty clear and Americanized.

I've seen enough evidence the last 3 and half years with my eyes, ears, and mental understanding that America made one Big Ass mistake in electing a commie for POTUS. The MSM didn't vette the commie, and didn't care that he was a commie. The sheeple were mesmerized by the Hope and Change mantra just like Hitler mesmerized the German people. It is ok to be a democrat and vote for democrat candidates, but it is absolutely not ok to be stupid and believe everything the MSM tells you, and to become mesmerized by a candidate that you knew absolutely nothing about. But then to elect someone like this for most important position of US government is just not the American way to elect officials of government. The evidence is very clear that America can't take another 4 years of the commie as POTUS.

If the deciding factor in voting for either one is the 2nd Amendment, then just by all evidence of increased gun sales the last 4 years because Americans fear that Obama is gonna do away with the 2nd A should clearly sway your decision for Romney. The last four years has produced a clear and present warning sign that America should and can correct a mistake they made in 2008. The verdict is still out as to weather or not the sheeple are still mesmerized by the Hope and Change mantra. God help us if the commie is re-elected.

I don't think president Obama is a communist. I don't think he is Muslim (not that it matters a whit to me). I do believe Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii and is therefore a U.S. citizen by birth. I also believe Mr. Obama is a good man who wants the best for our country. But I will NOT vote for OBAMA in this election because I believe he is taking the country in the wrong direction. I think Mr. Romney is a politician through and through, but he is a good man and I will vote for him because I believe he will take the country in the right direction. He's not perfect, but neither was Reagan (who in my opinion was a great president). I've gotten over my concerns about Romney and am ready to move on. Obama has got to go. (Yes, I've mellowed to Romney over the past month. He's the best we can do this time around).

I agree. Romney may actually surprise us. I'm all in. I would send him money if I thought he needed it.

Actually I kinda cringe sometimes when he speaks, compared to throwing up when BHO speaks.

Like the other day he had an excellent opportunity to cut BHO down to size when the college interest loan question came up, instead he sided with BHO. Apparently he was caught off guard and didn't know the details or he didn't want to scare off any votes. My bet is he didn't want to scare off votes.

A prepared speech in front of supporters? He's going to tell them what they want to hear.

I'm with the professor "I've gotten over my concerns about Romney and am ready to move on. Obama has got to go."

Have you ever heard Obama speak to a group without his telepromter ? Now that's when I want to throw up. It makes me wonder if he ever passed speech class in college, but of course nobody knows what his grades were or for that matter it seems nobody knows anything about him. Anyway, you would think the messiah to the far far left wacko's would be able to give impromptu speeches. And those idiots thought that Bush 2 couldn't speak.

I'm honestly am so tired of voting for "the lesser of two evils". I wish America would get a candidate that was honest...someday when pigs fly I guess.

We can only play the cards that we are dealt, so we're either in or we are out. It's a one hand game. In means a chance. Out means lost already. Just the way it is. No one said we had to like it. Most of us don't, but... We can only play the cards that we are dealt, so we're either in or we are out. Catch 22.

i honestly hope the day comes when people get away from using that "lesser of two evils" phrase, but it may

only happen when we, as a society, decide to return to a "just" way of life and reclaim our liberty, by becoming

engaged in the process again, instead of just cliche'ing it to death. We have allowed it to happen by our own

complacency. Cut Romney some slack, please, until he has a chance to prove himself out.

Society can't decide which kind of beer they like, or how many stupid laws it takes to control it. We'll be lucky if society doesn't reelect the commie.

Are you kidding me? He's already proven everything he needs to prove to me while he was governor.
