AC commander..... personally owned one, and know a guy on here who has run 15k + rounds through one with the factory setup... nuff said. only thing is that you need to immediately ditch the factory ACT mags that come with it.

Would you still buy the AC if it were chrome?

I own two Metroarms 1911s, one American Classic II in hard chrome, and one blued Commander, and both are very fine pistols. I had to change out the mag catch on the ACII to make it 100% with JHPs (EGW higher mag catch went in with very little fitting required), but the Commander has been flawless so far out of the box.

I have not owned, nor shot, the Remington, but I have always been a big Remington fan, and their 1911s that I have fondled at the LGS have looked like very nice, tight firearms -- great finish. I do not think you could go wrong with either pistol.

You can't go wrong either way. I haven't handled the AC but have heard good things. I'd go with that just in case you want to start carrying later. I have a buddy who has an R1 that I've shot a couple of times. They're nice. Can't go wrong there if you want a relatively inexpensive full size of good quality.

So no one loves the R1?

The Remington has true classic lines of the original 1911s without todays grip enhancements, beavertails and snagless sights. My shooting style just wouldn't let me practice well with the Remmy. I have not held the AC but if it is anything like the pic of what Nash has above, there would be no question of which one to grab, in my opinion... the AC Commander.

Only drawback is the AC is not American made. I think it's Philipines. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I prefer the standard sized 1911 platform so I'd steer clear of the Commander clone for my first 1911. The R1 is a very ice basic pistol that you can enhance yourself with after market part's. As to the American classic product line I will say you do get great value for a very fair price.

Remington has probably cut the barrel life of a typical 1911 by a huge amount. An average barrel will usually last close to 100k. I think that the R1 will start shearing barrel lugs off in 1/4 that amount.

I realize that this is not a big deal to most shooters, particularly after reading an article in American Handgunner this month. The article mentioned a new study by the NSSF and gathered stats on shooters. "Motivated" shooters will only shoot an average of 1589 rounds in a years time, and that is through multiple handguns. Single handgun owners shoot way less. So, the R1 will give a lifetime of shooting when considered in this light. However, I will never recommend the R1 since I feel they made a bone headed move by changing the design. Plus there is no way to fix it other than welding up and recutting the frame, or milling the frame for a ramped barrel.

Wow! That looks good. Apparently I'm closed minded and just needed to see the AC with some different grips.

sometimes a change of view makes a decision easy. ultimately I purchased this one for $570 new, added $50 VZ grips from a buddy, wilson internals ($50), and a 10-8 trigger ($30)...soo for $700 and it being done the way I enjoy it, I cant go wrong.

check out some reviews before buying anything

problem is that anyone can leave a review, and I know it's hard to believe but there are 1911 snobs out there.... I know, you find that incredibly hard to believe but it is true....people who leave bad reviews because they have more money than sense. Don't get me wrong, I love a custom 1911, but at the end of the day, I shoot what hits the red.

AC is made out of country you are correct. I have repeatedly heard that AC purchased old smith and springer machinery to manufacture their guns... could be why the tolerances are low.... also could be a rumor.

I haven't handled either of these two pistols, but would prefer a Ruger or Springfield Armory for my first 1911.

Why do you prefer the ruger?
