Good Contact with Smyrna Police

Recommended Posts

Has an incident today where some kid in a parking lot tried to throw a rock at his sister and missed and cracked my windshield. Long story short I had to call Smyrna police for a report lady and kid left the area, When the officer showed up I gave him my ID and told him I was carrying. He asked where on me and what it was and then said If you don't draw i want. He filled out an incident report and then told me Smyrna has him carrying a Springfield and really wanted to carry his Glock. Shot the breeze for a bit and went on or way. Great guy he did Smyrna proud.

We've got several of them here on the forum and they are by and large a VERY professional department.  And the fact that we've got several here on TGO should tell you that we've got quite a few "gun guys" on the department as well.

So what about the lady and kid leaving the scene?  Did you get a license plate number?

I had a similar incident in Morristown a couple of months ago. The missus and I had gone up there one weekend to visit her mother and brother. I'd gone to Walmart to pick up something and got lost in all the construction going on in the area. It was dark and I'd evidently run a stop sign in the construction/parking area and got pulled over by MPD. When asked for my driver's license, I told him I was armed and was reaching for my wallet. He looked at it, and my HCP, told me why he pulled me over and sent me on my way w/o a ticket. He was courteous and so was I, no problems.

Yes i did get her make and model and license number for the police. The officer said he would give the info to the detectives and asked if i wanted to press charges for property damage. I am going to give her a chance to do the right thing and then see if i need to proceed further.

You already gave her the chance to do the right thing and she took off.  Why am I having to point this out?

why did you feel it necessary to advise the LEO you were carrying?

just curious as to your position on this matter.

I'll assume you're question was addressed to me.

Three reasons...

1) If he'd run a check on my DL #, he would've seen that I had an HCP, and might have asked me why I hadn't informed him that I was carrying. I know that in TN I'm not required to do so, but he may not. As it turned out, he merely looked at my DL & HCP, didn't check my car registration, run the tags or anything. He said "Be careful", and sent me on my way.

2) I carry my HCP underneath my DL in my wallet. When I remove the DL, the HCP is clearly visible. Had he noticed that, I probably would've been asked if I was carrying and I wasn't going to lie to him. And I wasn't going to the take the stance of "I don't have answer that question", or similar bollocks.

3) Courtesy.

I was involved in a traffic accident in Mount Juliet... it was my first contact with law enforcement since I had gotten an HCP and I said to the 2 guys, by the way, I have a carry permit but I am not carrying - I swear, just like it had been practiced both of them them looked at me and said, "Why not?!?" I said it wasn't allowed at work and the sargent said, that's a silly rule. LOL!

Warren vs The District Of Columbia. That and the anti parking lot folks, what option do we have? They can't have it both ways and I wish no harm against anyone, but there will be a day when this this all comes to a crossing and I hope/pray it goes our way. Police have no duty to protect, but at the same time, you are restricted to protect yourself. Something has to give somewhere. Its nice to hear that alot of LEOs'  understand the Catch-22.
