I had that forearm on my Bushmaster. It's a nice solid piece of hardware. I'm confused by your choice of the Eotech, however, since you originally stated that you were wanting more of a precision plinker. Reflex sights like the Eotech are better for closer range, faster shooting.

Have you decided to go a different route with the rifle entirely?

The EOTech probably isn't the absolute "ideal" optic for what I had planned, but my budget is gone. After combining my needs with my budget, the EOTech was going to be my choice. Actually, I was going to skip optics all together and go with the Troy's, but I think I got a pretty decent deal on the EOTech. Good enough I had to go with it.

I was originally considering the EOTech with a magnifier, but I'm not sure about that right now. I may get myself started with the EOTech, then end up buying a longer range optic down the road. I always assumed I'd have more than one optic set-up anyway. It's just gonna take a while.

Did you forget about the Millet DMS-1 or was it just not to your liking? If I was going to put a magnified optic on my rifle, that's exactly the one I'd be going for. And it's cheaper than the Eotech.

That's the exact model I'll be getting in the future, but I also wanted the ability to shoot closer range with faster sight acquisition. Admittedly, I'm kinda thinking in the short term.

I checked out the Millett a couple weeks ago, and think it will be a great longer range sight, but feel I'd lack the close and fast shooting. It wasn't an easy decision, but I had to go one way or the other for now. If it were a perfect world, I'd have both optics right now.

Take the Eotech, you already know what your getting with that and get a Millet or another scope later. In fact since you'll have your close range stuff covered then you can look at some higher mag level scopes and shoot out a little farther.

Of course by then you'll be looking at just getting another upper so you don't have to re-zero anything by pulling it off one upper. It never ends, learn to live with it.

Thank You! I needed someone on my side. Tungy-Pooh just doesn't want to see me happy.:puke:

He said I could always change my mind and not take it (it's still at Hero Gear), but I hate to do that.:puke:

I'm sure Joe could sell you a DMS-1 if you wanted to go that route. If I were running a 16" bbl on my rifle, I'd have a DMS-1 for it instead of an only 1x reflex sight. Hell, I may order one for my wife's (aka "our other") AR later. It'll have at least a 16" bbl and this would be perfect. :taunt:

Hey Paul if you want the DMS-1, no problem! We have several in stock ready to go.

Remember what I told you; YOU are the only one that has to be happy with your rifle. If it works for you, that's all that matters. (Unless someone here wants to step up and start paying for your gear :puke: )

The DSM-1 is a great little scope, and gets good reviews from 3 gun shooters and guys wanting an SPR type rifle.

So, don't stress man. We can revisit your optic selection when you pick up the completed upper.

I know I've seen a thread or two about breaking in the barrel on a handgun, but don't recall a thread about doing so for an AR barrel.

Is it really beneficial and/or necessary? I've read a handful of articles by those who are supposed to be "professionals", but of course, some say yes, some say no.

What do you ARer's have to say? If you believe it to be beneficial and/or necessary, what are the methods you'd suggest.

I've really enjoyed the whole process of custom building my own AR, except for the moments when I have to make up my mind.

Joe, I'm not trying to rush you in any way, but do you have a rough ETA on the upper being ready?

I have a call into LMT, but was on the road today and was stuck in meetings all day with several Police Chiefs so I may have missed the return call.

I have another full day on the road tomorrow, but will try to call between meetings and get you an answer.

*If I had to guess, I would say 10 days until the upper is complete and ready to drop onto your lower.

Sounds fine. I'm not in any great rush.

Yes you are, you are just being polite and understanding!:hyper:

Looks like being in a rush will do no good...

When I couldnt get in touch with LMT (after like 15 attempts) I called the outside factory rep.

He let me know that they are currently shut down due to severe storms/tornados.

All power and phones are out.

I will continue to monitor this, and let you know when they are up and running and I have the upper in hand.

No problem. Just let me know.

Thanks.

As far as break in for your barrel, remember every round down the bore is one further towards the end of the useful life! Get your upper, clean it thouroughly, light coat of lube in the bore (just a sheen, no thick film) and shoot normally. Thats it.
