tgo upper build help

Recommended Posts

i have now built 3 lowers but this will be my first upper. another member on here is willing to help me put it together but i need some help with all the parts. i have the tgo upper, charging handle, bcg, forward assist, and dust cover(i my change it). i think all i need now is barrel, rail, gas tube, and gas block. anything else? does barrel nut come with the rail? what about delta ring, what is it and do i need it? here are the links to what i am thinking about, will all of these work together? any suggestions for something cheaper or better?

Just a quick tip, you could probably save a bit if money ordering everything from Brownells or midway and only paying one shipping charge. They'll probably have most of the stuff in at midway but you may need to go with different brands for the barrel and gas system.

Unless the ones you showed above are different than the other ones I've seen, you don't need a delta ring or anything to do a free float build.

Here's a helpful video on installing your gas block.

Here's one on free float guards. Yours may differ slightly in installation but this should help give you an idea on what you need to install a free float tube. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JBeIAjE1BhI

Can you find cheaper, sure, better....debatable. If you're looking at a Daniel Defense rail you're not on a shoestring budget. They are awesome, but pricey.

thanks tricky, i'll watch the videos. some of the links had free shipping. once i get ready to order i will shop around a little more, just trying to narrow down my choices.

jack, i want a quality, accurate rifle but the wallet is getting thin. is there a rifle length rail similar to the DD that is well built and cheaper?

i have thought about a gas block with a rail on top just since it will set out in front

There are several rails worth having that don't cost $200 - $300. Check out some of the Yankee Hill offerings. They offer some great products for a much lower than $300. Midwest Industries and Yankee Hill are some of my favorite, for the money. For me, it does sometimes come down to the "look" I am trying to achieve, and that sometimes means spending more money, because the item that fits the bill is produced by one of the more expensive companies. I try to take my time and see if a cheaper option can grow on me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Edited by TripleDigitRide

these two look comparable to the DD light rail. anything wrong with either of these? would one be preferred over another?

i am also looking at this gas block, it is a little higher but is more the look i like. all the manufactures have variations in lengths, how do i know if this block will work?

Because I'm not a fan of the two piece handguards, I'd choose the second one. I don't like the look of the railed gas blocks, but the length shouldn't matter, as long as you buy the correct length handguard. I prefer the low profile gas block, because it's covered by the handguard. This also gives you more handguard options to choose from. Edited by TripleDigitRide

Should save about $100 over the DD. Several to chose from. Both one piece and two piece. http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=149 This one would compare to DD. It's not a DD but it's a good product. http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=1109

Bear in mind that the DD Lite rail comes with a barrel nut AND wrench. All you need is a torque wrench. You also don't have to worry about a compromise torque on the barrel nut, because it doesn't have notches for the gas tube. It's also lighter than most handguards. I own two of them, and don't regret it at all. I own 3 DD rails total. Can you get something cheaper? Always. Can you get something better? I don't know. I just know that I appreciate their rails every time I pick up one of those guns.

has DD gone to a new generation lite rail?

this one on bcm http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=DD+2006&CartID=1 seems different then the one on DDs site.

after looking at this MI rail http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MI-T-12G2&CartID=4 it seems very similar. what differences are there between the two.

what rail length do most use for 18" barrel with rifle length gas system? i am looking at 12" but i have also looked at 15"

The DD is going to use a different mounting system. It's probably better, but I'm not convinced it's that much better for the average build. Do enough shopping for AR parts, and you'll see plenty of companies trying to fix problems that don't really exist.

If you're building a precision AR, I can see spending more money for parts. Once you reach a certain level of quality, the return on your investment becomes minimal.

Take TV's for example. Is a $3000 TV better than a $300 TV? Without a doubt. Anyone who watches them side-by-side could easily see a huge difference. Is a $3000 better than a $2000 TV? Probably so. Is it $1000 better? For the average viewer, probably not. Both are going to have pretty incredible pictures.

If you want the more expensive parts, and you have the money to buy them, by all means buy them. If I was building a precision rifle where every little bit counts, I would more than likely fork over the cash.

We can play the money games all day. Unless you have held one in your hands, you may not see anything but the money. I got one and put it on my rifle. Then, I got two more. Has nothing to do with precision. Has everything to do with not having a heavy horse dick wrapped around my barrel :). I'm not dissing every other rail out there. Just saying that the DD rails have lots going for them that you ain't gonna see unless you pick one up. It's a Glock vs. Taurus argument.

Are they the top of the pyramid, in my opinion yes, but you can get a great lightweight rail for a considerable discount. DD lite rail 10" - 12.1 oz $299 MI T-series 10" - 12.0 oz $169 I agreed the DD is awesome, but the MI is good too. I would rather sink the funds in a good FCG if budget is of any concern.

I've held more than a few DD rails, and the rain clouds didn't instantly part and make way for blue sky, rainbows and magically delicious marshmallows. I'm not saying they aren't nice or that I wouldn't buy one for a certain build, but I'm not convinced they are so much better to justify the price difference. For most of my builds, if they were the only company that had a rail design style that I was looking for, I would spend the money in a heartbeat. If, like in the OP's case, there were another very comparable and much cheaper option, I am more likely to think twice about spending the extra money. Again, much depends on the type of build I'm considering. And I'm still unsure what type of build the OP is after.

The T series is a round rail. The DD is an "oval". An yes, the MI is a good rail. Maybe horse dick was a little harsh :) I shouldn't let it bug me, since it ain't on my rifle

That's the beauty of the AR platform. We can all make something fit in our budget. I'm not trying to sell DD rails. I'm trying to defend them. Kinda enjoying it too. :) Step on over to the Highroad, and they'll tell you that you're full of #### for getting an AR. After all, a Mini 14 is just as good :)

The Troy one piece rails are great too. Much narrower than the Midwest rails. They have qd holes machined as we'll. They are very solid. They also come in fde if that is your thing.

Those are kinda cool. I helped GuitaRx with his rifle, and he used a Troy Bravo. Fits over a standard barrel nut.

I got the Troy Alpha Rail for my new build, I think I like it better than the Bravo Rail.. it too goes over a standard barrel nut.
