The only downside to me, YMMV, with more bullet capacity = more weight. I have the 8 rd mag + 1. Statistics says I’m good. Plus I’m at the point I don’t need or want another gun unless there is good reason.

I’d shoot the hell out of a 226. They made a gazillion of them, so no point keeping the round count low unless it’s a super rare variant. You sound like one badass uncle/grandad gifting a 686 and a Mini 14! I’m the only one in my whole family whose into firearms, unfortunately.
