  1. Heh... I suppose that my weapon jamming isn't likely enough to worry about since there aren't many stories of private citizens killed because of that? The point wasn't to research as many stories as I can find. You wanted an example of how carrying only 5 rounds might turn out bad, and there ya' go, and it was very easy to find. Doesn't mean the J-frame isn't a great carry weapon... but it means it's worth considering pocketing a speed-loader too. btw, I do have some antivenin for camping... but I don't carry it with me around town. Color me 'over-prepared' by your standards, but I like my chances of survival compared to the next guy.
  2. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9805E1DF1738F93BA35751C0A962958260 Suppose she could have stopped them with more rounds? How unlikely is this, really? I don't think it's that unlikely... Not such a hard case to make. The only reason she is alive is that this 3rd BG's gun jammed... NOT because she carried a J-frame, that's for sure. This only took about 30-seconds to find... and it was the first search result (probably because it was a cop story which received noteriety... and because she was lucky enough to survive).
  3. I'm quite positive that I print all the time... Nobody notices or cares. Hell, I've been patted down with a full-size gun on my side and didn't get made... People are oblivious, truly. It's a non-issue.
  4. Georgia-Arms 'Canned Heat' is only $235 per 1000... which equates to $11.75 per 50. Even after shipping you'll shoot twice as much if you buy bulk from them. That's the only reason I can afford to shoot as much as I do... I go through at least 500rd of centerfire (9mm, .357sig, .38spl, and .45acp) when I go to the range. Do yourself a favor, no matter what caliber you shoot, and start buying bulk. It's nice to have ammo left over when you leave the range... and it's even more nice to only have to pay the range-fees for a few months after you've got a good stock of ammo. There's no way I could go back to buying a box at a time.
  5. Yeah, a failure to stop when you only have 5 rd at your immediate disposal wouldn't end well... especially if you're facing more than one BG. The likelihood is that they will run away as soon as you fight back. But since it's conceivably even less likely to be attacked in the first place... playing the odds isn't even a worthwhile point. The idea is to be a prepared as reasonably possible. 'Reasonable' is relative to each person's situation.
  6. Whoops! Sorry about that, I don't have everybody's name straight with their screen-name, apparently... fixed that...
  7. Thanks to everybody who came, this meet was certainly a success! Got to see some new faces, and some new guns... Fallguy, you are the man... I can no longer complain about having the longest drive. clutepc, thanks for the flattery, you'll enjoy an XD. HanSolo, thanks for the ride in the BM'er... You can share a lane with me anytime. That Steyr was pretty sweet, too, btw. Hope everybody can make the next one... I'll have to bring more ammo next time, too. All I had was leftovers from the last shoot.
  8. Most commonly, I'll carry the XD-357 with 12+1, plus a spare 12rd mag, and the P3AT on my weak side holding 6+1. Sometimes I just carry the P3AT, and no spare mags Sometimes (rarely) I carry the XD with 3 spare mags and no BUG. So, anywhere between 7rd and 49rd.
  9. But, it's because the government cares about us, and only wants what's best for us, right? We couldn't possibly be trusted to ascertain the best path to meeting our responsibilities to ourselves, family and country...
  10. I have one of these. Bought it 3 years ago, and it's held up well. It's pretty secure, and very fast to draw from. It does take a large cover garment to conceal though. I use it in the paddle configuration, since it seems to fit more tightly to my body that way. Make sure you practice drawing from it... there have been a few incidents of people whose finger went straight from the button into the trigger when drawing because they didn't keep their finger straight indexed along the gun, and shot themselves. It takes gross negligence to do this, as you'll find once you see how it works, but it's something to be aware of.
  11. We're frosty here... roads have an inch or so on them, but entirely passable. Nothing a yankee can't handle
  12. Good post. Which begs the question, who should be the authority on when a person becomes a mature adult? The government doing so is a joke, really... Especially if the standards were changed, and everyone evaluated on a case-by-case basis. at 18 years old, we allow people to make nearly any life-or-death decision for themselves... other than owning a pistol or drinking alcohol. If the average person doesn't become mature until 21, then so be it... driving, smoking, voting, drinking, shooting/carrying, joining the military, entering a contract, etc... should all be prohibited to anyone under 21. But if it's 18, make it 18... If we must have social controls to regulate permisson of immature people whose parent's and peers don't bother to keep them in line, then let's at least be consistent.
  13. It's a pistol caliber, it will be okay. I'm bringing my Marlin 1894 .357mag lever rifle.
  14. Jason's Deli has the most specific votes, so that sounds good to me. 3pm. My wife will be coming with me... We may not come to the range, since we're hoping to be able to visit a friend of ours who has just been released from the hospital that evening. It'll be good to meet everybody though. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=Jason's+Deli&near=Murfreesboro,+TN&ie=UTF8&z=10&iwloc=A
  15. To truly and objectively discover what kind of psychological effects which a gun may have on your mind, I would suggest that you buy one for yourself and report about that. I can't believe that citing an online forum as a resource is acceptable nowadays... you have no control over the accuracy of the statements. Open-minded and considerate is a good start... lose the attitude of us as being on display for your psychoanalyzation, and we'll get along beautifully. We don't mind answering questions, but please realize that we are adults and prefer to participate in discussions which are subject driven... not 20-questions fed to us like a shot-pattern, going in all directions. Post each question in an individual thread, with some background from yourself, state your own opinion, and watch an interesting discussion develop... we eagerly welcome you to do that. Studying a public forum is not research... Just like it would not be 'news' if Channel 5 did a story on someone's personal account of an event posted in a thread here. But, contrasting our opinions with your own will make for an interesting paper, I'm sure. So I hope you will let us read it, too.
  16. Yes, benefactors get a bigger mailbox. Also, there is a way to download your pms onto your computer to archive them, so that you can delete them off of the server. At the bottom of the PM screen, look for:
  17. Todd@CIS is an AK Armorer, I believe.... he's a member and a vendor here on TGO.
  18. No problemo... I was probably going to bow out anyways, something about driving a rwd sports car on ice for an hour and a half each way wasn't looking appealing. Keep us updated though, I want to do this.
  19. I could certainly understand that... if someone comes in looking for a P3AT, but only the LCP is in stock, most likely they will simply buy the Ruger instead of waiting.
  20. Hero Gear had a couple... I bought one of them right off the shelf recently. I'm not sure about right this minute, but I always see a few K-T pistols there ready to go.
  21. Yes, this state doesn't go by Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter... we have 365 seasons. Unlike where I lived in Arizona, there we had 2 seasons... Summer and Christmas.
  22. Any idea what the round-count will be?
  23. In a way this does relate to the Carry Permit for 18y/olds... since a significant number of college students are under 21 for the first couple years. Of course the professors should be allowed to carry, but it does beg the question whether or not only the Junior, Senior and Graduate classes should be defendable by the students. Just food for thought.
  24. To be quite honest, the only weekend this month that I am not booked up is the 29th and 30th... and the 30th is the IDPA meet that The Rabbi is setting up, which I would like to got to, but I dunno if my budget can handle driving and shooting every weekend this month (I shoot alot when I go). So, don't plan it around me. There's a possibility that I might be back in town Sunday mid-day, and could be able to drive down to the 'noog in the mid-afternoon on the 16th. I know you want your stock I'll get it down there one way or the other.
  25. I think one of the only other differences (used to be, anyways), other than those mentioned, is that the '88 only has one action bar on one side of the gun, attached to the pump... but the 500 has an action bar on both sides. Makes the action a bit more rugged and smoother to operate.
