greetings from tullahoma--a town as unusual as it's name
molonlabetn replied to bobmack's topic in New Member Introductions
Welcome to TGO Bob, good to see a neighbor on here. -
I have a feeling that this will be alot more popular than their .50GI 1911s... Great idea, as far as I'm concerned, I mean, the cartridge is already developed, why not expand the market?

No doubt that the ammunition was a contributing factor... thing is however, it's pretty uncommon to hear about any other makes being so sensetive to variation in loads. The low safety factor of the Glock design is certainly just as much to blame, since it would be ridiculous to assume that the many times this has happened in .40s&w, .45acp and now .45gap Glocks, it was only a coincidence.

Nothing wrong with venting, glad you got it out. This thread's purpose had been fulfilled, and so it has been closed. This forum is not a place to attack each other.

Used XDs usually bring less than $400, unless they are somehow improved or have night-sights, etc... That's the best you could probably hope to sell it for, and the most that the dealer could hope to sell it for... of course they will try to get into it with enough margin to make it worth their while. They don't want your gun, they are only willing to make money off of it. If you or I was offered to buy a gun that we didn't necessarily want, the primary consideration we would have would be whether we could recoup our costs quickly, or eventually make money by selling it. The last year or so, I've traded for nearly all of my new guns... and that involves taking a loss on the trade. It simply depends on whether the purchase deal is worth that. Also, it's a matter of how much that gun is worth to you... if it's worth more than the prospective trade is allowing, then you'd best keep it.

Remind me to tell you a story sometime... it doesn't involve a restraining order, but probably should have.

Pre-frag rounds are a tradeoff of penetration in favor of rapid energy dump, in hopes of stunning the target into incapacitation... The problem is that the one of the (if not the) most important part of the terminal characteristics of a round is well noted to be penetration; without sufficient penetration the other wounding factors, such as energy, carried by the projectile will not greatly effect deeply located vital organs. The same example could be made of bird-shot vs. buck/slugs through shotguns... shallow wounds are ugly and painful, for sure, but they won't reliably incapacitate anything larger than a bird or rodent. So, I personally won't carry ammunition which is not loaded to specs which haven't shown to approach or exceed 12" of penetration in ballistic gelatin... it is from this idea that it becomes clear why some calibers aren't sufficiently suitable for carry unless using projectiles with maximize their penetration abilities, such as .32acp and .380acp... which are best served by FMJ ammunition. Also, I refuse to carry products which use obnoxious or misleading advertisements regarding their 'shock' ability or 'perfection'... So, that's a double strike for Extreme-Shock.

I'm actually very surprised that your car gun isn't chambered in .357magnum... it would seem to me that would trump either cartridge choice.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that The Rabbi doesn't believe in the Easter Bunny...

I've owned 3", 4" and 5" XDs... all are (for intents and purposes) equally accurate, mechanically. The 5" gun is simply easier to shoot accurately. I vastly prefer XDs to anything made by Taurus... but my advice to you is to get some one on one coaching with an experienced shooter, and put some more trigger time on the gun you have. Thats what I wish I had done when I was learning to shoot well, instead of bouncing from pistol to pistol hoping to find one that made me look better... Get used to what you've got, and you'll really appreciate a better pistol later on, and have more experience with which to make the decision of what to get.

I went a few times when I lived up that way. Good times. I agree that it's one of the few tracks where one is more likely to see a 'race', instead of a 'performance'. NHRA in Thunder Valley was my preference, though.

Band of Brothers themed Xd, need help
molonlabetn replied to a topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I think the best (and cheapest) modification you could make to your XD, to enhance it's representation of history, would be to trade it in on a Mil-Spec or G.I. 1911. The XD bears little resemblance to any weapon of that era, and I don't think there's anything one could do which would change that... -
Reloads FTF Taurus PT140 Pro
molonlabetn replied to mdmoseley's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
That's interesting... I wonder if it's not so much the strength of the striker as it is the amount which the pin protrudes from the breechface when in full stroke. I mention that because even the lightest striker springs I can install in my XDs will light off even the most reputably heavy-primered ammo I can find quite reliably (S&B, for example). I think that has more to do with it's deep stroke than the tension of the spring. -
I've never shot one, but I've witnessed one being fired... and subsequently fall apart (hammer broke off). I haven't heard any good things about them other than they are cheaper than Kel-Tec, but deservedly so.

Okay, let's kick this one off. Hoping for some good weather, let's hear some suggestions for outdoor ranges local to Nashville/Murfreesboro. Also, where do we want to eat? I know of at least 2 people who rather enjoyed Jason's Deli... Finally, this meet will be on a Saturday, probably the 5th or the 12th... but we'll nail that down as it comes closer. My idea is that we should consider alternating the meet on Saturdays & Sundays every other month. I'll add a poll later once we have some suggestions for an outdoor ranges and whether we want to try a different restaurant this time, or go to Jason's Deli or Famous Dave's again...

I appreciate your point of view, since you have seen both sides of the fence, but I think the real issue here is the simple fact that there is no justification for a police officer to manhandle a person based on simple possession of a firearm, which, once the permit is finally asked for, was totally legit to begin with. The burden is upon them to ask for the permit. If the fellow is acting erratically/threateningly, sure... or if they match the description of a known criminal, sure... But what we're talking about is akin to pulling over every vehicle on the road to run the VIN and DL of the driver just in case they might not be legal, when there is no other indication that they are not. Or, perchance the opposite occurs and an officer who sees you carrying a gun walking down the street stops you to verify that you have a permit, and if they happen to see you have car-keys decide to run your DL and give you a breathalyser in the off-chance that you might be about to drive drunk or without a license. In essence, what is being suggested is that we should give credibility to the idea that the general populace is unfit to be armed until proven otherwise. I won't do that. I am one of the most courteous people you would ever pull over, and that is on-purpose, because I have alot of respect for what that job entails putting up with... but that doesn't mean I am obligated to divulge more of my business than the law requires. If my HCP never comes up during a traffic stop, that's exactly how it should be... if my HCP comes up during an encounter on the street if an officer becomes aware of my firearm, that's what it's intended for. But throwing me on the ground at gun-point before any words were exchanged related to that issue, in either case, would be inexcusable... and would certainly be greater force than necessary, which the law provides recourse for. So, it's plainly impossible to justify an officer creating an issue over something which is not, simply due to their own biases. I'm not arguing that it does not occur, what I'm stating is that I don't have to go along with it voluntarily.

First part breakage - XD (~6K rd)
molonlabetn replied to molonlabetn's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I've got a Wolf rod and 21# spring... I don't use it, however, I didn't care for the recoil caracteristics with it installed. Aside from polishing the striker engagement face and sear, the XD-357 is bone stock now... I put the factory striker spring in now, even. -
All of those things could just as easily happen to me if I disclose beforehand as opposed to being asked, if the cop is predisposed to distrusting armed citizens. "lawful commands" Are not law unto themselves... It is simply illegal to use force to resist them, but not illegal to simply ignore them or refuse. I realize that it would be a matter for the courts to decide, at that point... but if it's an a$$hole cop just trying to push his own agenda or abuse his authority, I intend to use all of my resources to ensure that was a costly mistake on their part... and it would be, in light of the precedents set by other cases. In either case, I've yet to meet a police officer who didn't perform thier job courteously... though I must admit that I don't tend to have much interaction with them, since I live pretty safely (I've been pulled over twice since I got my permit nearly 6 years ago, and in both cases it was a simple hello how are you... didn't even bother to ID me, just told me to fix my headlight, and the other was a radar-gun malfunction which he was aware of shortly after hitting the lights, so he waved me on after that short explanation)

Howabout I merge this thread with that one, and throw in some survivalist compound posts for good measure?

Goes to show that it's worthwhile to follow up on negative experiences... eventually you will connect with someone who recognizes the flaw in their customer service and will make an effort to correct it.
