Wow... learn something new every day!

For a pistol which is designed to be carried, and not have thousands of rounds fired through as a range-gun, polymer rails are acceptable... But it is preferable to have replaceable metal rails on a gun which is intended to be fired a great deal. I've never seen polymer rails truly wear out though... I think Glocks have all polymer rails, and the XDs rear rails are polymer. They just get a bit looser over time, but not appreciably so once the gun is broken in.

Dontchaknow... they were perfecting the Hollywood feat of shooting above the BG and raining debris upon them without really hurting them.

Whew! Ya' had me worried about your new pistol there for a minute...

Why, it's for the impending rise of the Zombie Squirrels, of course! I think it's a great idea... you can take a semi-precision firearm with you in a compact case. It would even have benefits for those who use a motorcycle for primary transportation, now you can take a 10/22 to the range easily. Plus, you can suppress it, and rid your neighborhood of pesky tree-rats and stray cats without causing a commotion...

How does moisture/sweat affect bullets?
molonlabetn replied to PackinMama's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
It will be fine... but this is why it is a good idea to rotate out carry ammo every couple months or so. I'd worry more about the finish on the firearm, and even then not much. -
That's not a good sign! The extractor should grip the case-rim and pull it out. If the case is staying in the chamber, then something isn't working properly. I'd lock the slide back (if possible), and use a cleaning rod to push the cartridge out... I'm not sure I'd try to shoot the gun if the extractor isn't working properly, but that might be another way to get it out.

What Would You Do During a Mall Shooting?

Ya' know how, when you sit in a seat adjacent to an emergency exit on an airliner, you're told that by sitting there you're agreeing to assist in the evacuation of the plane? There are alot of us who are sitting by that door... and we might not be able or equipped to to everything necessary to fix everyone's problems, but if we're not willing to lend a hand at some level (and I'm not talking about taking on the job of the emergency response personnel), it would be appropriate to find another seat. That's just my take, and I'm only responsible for my actions... not anyone else's. As is everyone else. Self-preservation is #1... but conscience is a close second. -
There is such a thing as a legal mercenary, generally contracted by the government (look up Blackwater USA). However, this particular discussion is going nowhere constructive, thread closed.

Not entirely true. The sear of the XD does indeed retract the striker slightly during the trigger pull, it's evident when placing a finger on the cocked indicator of a cleared pistol and dry-firing it, you will feel the striker move back. The Glock moves it's striker rearward slightly more than the XD does during the trigger pull, but neither gun can completely recock the striker using only the trigger, thus they cannot be Double-Action-Only, by definition. By process of elimination, the only common definition for trigger function which fits the XD or Glock is Single-Action, for the above reasons. The most logical thing to do is recognize that any Bolt-Action rifle which uses a striker firing system is, in fact, defined as a Single-Action mechanism, and as such is a definition which applies to any striker fired system which cannot recock itself.

Tell me when, and I'll do my best to make it! I don't know Chattanooga very well, as to where the ranges are... I just go downtown if I'm there, so I don't have any suggestions for where to meet, but I'm sure I can find whatever ya'll decide on.

Tell her she looks like she's gaining weight, I'm sure her aim will improve dramatically! (just kidding) It sounds like she needs to practice dry-firing, and getting used to holding the firearm on-target during the trigger pull. That will improve her performance at the range.

Very few striker fired pistols are truly Double-Action or DA-only, since they must be manually re-cocked in order to re-strike. Walther P99AS, Taurus 24/7 and Mil-Pro are a few exceptions. Glocks, M&Ps, XDs, SR9s, P99QAs, etc... are all functionally identical (ie, trigger will only function in one mode, pre-cocked... no re-strike capability) The closest relative of this type of function is Single Action, in exposed-hammer pistols. So, the information you were given is inaccurate... this type of misinformation is common, however, due to the lack of technical competence by certain agencies who label some striker-fired pistols as DAO, and others as SA, even when their function in actual use is identical. In fact, the clerk's statement that striker fired guns cannot be single-action is pretty foolish when you consider that the majority of bolt-action rifles are in fact striker fired... and nobody calls them Double-Action-Only, regardless of whether the motion of the trigger retracts the striker a few thousands during the disengagement of the sear. The categorization of certain pistol triggers which operate this way as DAO is simply misinformation.

Regardless of the circumstances, none of us nor law enforcement has the authority to unquestionably decide who to sacrifice for the 'greater good', through our own actions. I certainly wouldn't take a shot which I was aware could injure an innocent person. Like Mars said, your mind is the ultimate weapon, and using any weapon indiscriminately is both ethically and (in most cases) legally wrong. -
Sig makes excellent pistols, you really don't need to look any further to find a high-quality piece in that price-range, if the gun suits your shooting/carry style.

I'm sure all the beer they drink cuts the grease and creates a happy medium... it's all about balance

It usually depends on how many middle-men there are between the manufacturer and you... some might go through multiple distributors before ending up at the store front, and some bulk outfits can get them cheaper more directly. CDNN usually has competitive prices on most magazines.
-
I'm surprised that they went with a straight-up DAO trigger on this gun... I was expecting a DAK setup.

Looks like a nice trip, good pictures. Now I'm hungry... I'm thinking some bratwurst and beer tonight. Glad you're home safe!

I was thinking about going today, but I got caught up doing yard work... If I get motivated, I might be able to make it up to On-Target tonight, but that's not certain at this point. They are open till 10 though...

Gallatin Gun shotgun/pistol match info

Question... Since this is a 'free-style' shoot, will 140mm magazines for the pistols be allowed? My XD-9 has +5 extensions on the mags which are supposed to make them 140mm (I haven't measured them to be sure...). I can always put the original base-plates back on, I keep them in my range-bag, but I would be interested to actually use the setup I've got. -
Is the grip very thick, or is is simply long? I know that this pistol has to be a bit bulky, at least, to fit 14rd in the magazine... but I'm hoping that it's still similar in size to the XD-45 and Glock 21SF.

That is a valid concern though... what happens when you draw in response to hearing shots fired, and everyone around you assumes that you are the shooter? -

Woo-Hoo! My camping trip next weekend has been moved... I'll be there, barring bad weather, death or illness. -
FN Pistols don't receive much notoriety (except, perhaps, for the Five-seveN)... but I think this one is going to make a name for itself. The FN FNP-45, as written about here: http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ga_handguns/ga_fn45_200801/ I'm sure that I'll eventually be in the market for a .45acp pistol again, and when I do, this one looks like it'll be excellent competition for the likes of the XD-45, Glock 21SF, M&P 45, etc... The external hammer and DA/SA trigger action will appeal to some... and I wouldn't be surprised if they followed suit, as with their other FNP lineup, and produce a SAO version with a safety to be carried cocked-and-locked. As a side note... FN has just released a .357sig version of the FNP, as well. Veeeeery interesting... I'll be giving these guys a harder look in the future. Here's some of the numbers, in comparison with the other FNPs: Weight 941 g (33.2 oz) (FNP-45) 1040 g (26.7 oz) (FNP-40) 1040 g (26.7 oz) (FNP-357) 1040 g (26.7 oz) (FNP-9) 703 g (24.8 oz) (FNP-9m) Length 200 mm (7.875") (FNP-45) 187 mm (7.375") (FNP-357) 187 mm (7.375") (FNP-40, FNP-9) 179 mm 7.06" (FNP-9m) Barrel length 11 mm (4.5") (FNP-45) 10 mm (4") (FNP-357) 10 mm (4") (FNP-40, FNP-9) 9.63 mm (3.791") (FNP-9m) Feed system 14 round magazine (FNP-45) 14 round magazine (FNP-357) 14 round magazine (FNP-40) 16 round magazine (FNP-9) 15 round magazine (FNP-9m
