1. I wish I could offer you more, as I have the same interest in learning this. Dave Canterburry has some interesting videos on youtube. I think you will find them if you search pathfinder school.
2. That is impressive. I think each knife you show on here looks better than the last.
3. I would be interested in this. I have to be honest, I don't have any blacksmith type tools to offer to share.
4. Pics.....pics.....pics.....pics.....pics......pics.....pics.....pics How many stiches?
5. Those look great. I really like bottom one. I like a smaller sturdy knife.
6. We are completely addicted. Phil inspires me to be a better husband and father. I love that my wife, duaghter and myself can all sit down and enjoy a show with no worries of any of us being embarrassed but what comes out. That being said I do believe the show is made up somewhat of re-enactments of previous envents in thier lives. Si when the guys went for snow cones=" I got a brain sneeze," "It's a brain sneeze, that's when your brain needs to sneeze, but hey, it's a brain, it cain't sneeze so it just hurts'"
7. I would like to see the fishing license separated from the small game license. I don't hunt, I have nothing against it, i think it is cool, I just don't do it. Every year I have to pay 30 bucks for a type 01 small game/fishing license to basicly drown crickets and throw a rubber worm or two with my daughter when it is too cool or we are too tired to swim.
8. I fear that they would be heart broken that they fought and died for us to become what we have as a country.
9. It is just a cheap chinese grinder. I got it at harbor freight. I get a lot of things at harbor freight LOL.
10. That is amazing. I would truly love to learn to hammer metal.
11. Thanks for all the kind comments guys, I really enjoy making them.
Very nice. I especially like the one in the middle left on the last picture. That blade shape is pretty cool.
I like that one to. I was thinking of it as a small hunting/skinning knife. Although I don't hunt LOL. That is just the way the knife came out of the metal. The one beside it was an attempt to recreate it with good steel. I gues it proves that with hand made knives no two will be alike.
Fantastic! I wish I had the tools and ability to make a knife. I particularly love the knife at the top of all the photos. Great job! Sent from my HTC Inspire using Tapatalk 2
That one is actaully a really great knife. It has become my shop knife. I am going to try to reproduce it with the next batch metal that I get. Broomhead, thanks for the link, definatly helpful. In regards to the 1084, what do you do to the metal to protect it? I thought 1084 was prone to rust/corrode?
12.
Those look good. How are you doing your heat treatments?
The first one I heated it in a blower fed fireuntil it was non magnetic. Then I quenched it in oil until the flames went out. After it cooled to ambient temp again I put it back in the fire until the spine was a blueish color and then back in the oil until the flames went out. and let it cool agian. That worked ok but I did not trust the second step so I changed up a bit on the last 3. I used a different kind of forge that gets crazy hot very fast. think of it like a forced air fed jet engine. I let the blades get non magnetic again and then in the oil. after that I put them in an oven at 425 for and hour then let them cool and then back in at 400 for an hour. That got me the straw color that I was looking for. They take an edge really well. A lot better than I was expecting.
13. so guess what I decided to try. You guessed it. I tried my hand at making my own knives. I wish I had made more pics of the process but I rarely think that far ahead. The first one was more of a prototype just to see if my thinking on the matter was sound. I went through the whole process including heat treating and tempering. I just used cheap metal that I got at Lowes, and a piece of hickory that was in my firewood pile. I ended up with a decent looking knife, it just wo;t hold an edge. It did serve it's purpose well though as I learned i could do it. So I did it again. this time to make a one that I would not completely assemble. This would give me a practice knife. One that I could learn to sharpen and polish metal and learn how to shape, finish and attach scales to. It came out ok to so I just kept going. The next step was to get some real steel and go for it. I ordered some 1095 stell and bought some nice wood to make scales from and fired up the ole belt grinder. I now have made four knoves total two of which are actual knives. They get sharp, very sharp, and stay that way. One has become my everyday use knife and I finished the fourth one today. I know what you are all saying to yourselves right now, "Without pics, it didn't happen." so let me give this a try. I am not very computer savy so I hope these post right. This is the very first one that is actually made of mild steel LOL, but the plan worked, Here they are in the order I made them as a work progresses on them, The bottom two are actual knife steel Here is the last one I finished today. It is quite large actualy and 3/16th" thick. The metal was bigger than I was expecting so I figured I should make a big knofe out of it LOL. This is all four of them as finished items. Feel free to let me know what you think good or bad.
14. happy Thanksgiving to all. I am certainly thakful for all of the collective knowledge here that has helped me so many time. Thanks for sharing folks
15. I may be wrong, but I believe a pump shotgun will cycle anything as you have to cycle it manually.
16. I like the fact that the show strays from the comics (graphic novels) in a few ways. It keeps even the truest fans guessing. Lori is infact dead twice. They have stopped using so much comic book visual symbolism, but are beginning to use real life visual symbolism. They make sure we saw Carl with blood on his hands. I know it "got there when he was helping with Judith" but the fact is the same. He has blood on his hands. This is anchored by, the now late, T-dog's statement about the inmates; "for all we know, they have less blood on there hands than we do." I do believe, in the show Carol is dead. They made sure we never saw her turn her back on T-dog. I am thinking that is anchored by what I thought was her head wrap that Daryl found on the ground. It was on her when we say her go through the door. I also feel it was no coincedence that was say Maggie and Glen join together over baby Judith. They are now the carriers of new life. And WOW! No one is talking about the fact that they know the white scruffy inmate as Axel. Glen called him by name when stating that he seemed a "little unstable".
17. That is fantastic! Really beautiful craftmanship. Cocobolo is a very hard wood. i used some to make guide blocks for my band saw three years ago LOL. I am sorry if you have answered this a thousoand times but are your knives forged or stock reomoval? I love the shape of the blade on the top one.
18. I am assuming these are fingerling cats you are buying in bags, if I am wrong ignore this thought. If they are though, they are being eaten by the bass. Stunted bass are agressive feeders. Second thought, is that OhShoot is right on the money. Channel cats are predators and opportunity feeders and you have a pond full of bream for them and why the hell eat scraps when you can get fresh sushi? Have you eliminated the fact that you have uninvited guests harvesting your catfish for you. It Happens all the time around here. I know a few folk who won't let the truck deliver the fish, they pick them up and put the bags in big tubs so local folks don't know the pand has been restocked.
19. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pround to introduce to you, the 2012 Global Darwin Award recipient............................
20. This is a fantastic topic. I will add wild strawberries. Small, bright red and grow low to the ground in clusters. they look nothing like store strawberrries, more like mutated raspberries. I tried to add a pic form the interweb but when I click post it only shows a bazillion lines of code instead of the pic
21. Outstanding!! I love to hear of intelligent people making smart decisions.
22. I don't think he would mind me posting it. I would also like to state that I have no affiliation with him other than being a satisfied customer. It is Buckle and Hide Leather (that is not a typo) you can find him on the web at www.bucklehideleather.com
23. I think that is the beauty of the one I got. It is a plain brown leather belt. I specifically made sure I chose one with no special adorments to draw attention and so that it would go with pretty much anything I wear. It is a 1.5" belt so it fits in the loops of all my shorts and pants. The best part was it was $47.00 shipped. Can't beat that.
24. I recently bought the M&P sport in no small part due to Dolomite's recomendation. He was NOT wrong. The rifle is freakin' fantastic. Acuurate, eats anything I feed it and likes to play dirty. Every accessory I have purchaced has fit like a glove. I added a sightmark tactical red dot, sightmark 3x magnifier, a quad rail, a 2 point sling, a army surplus surefire light and bought 9 army surplus mags and a blackhawk bag to carry it all in, and I am still under the average price tag for a ready to shoot AR.
