That's how I see it. Generally, even if a location is posted (obviously this isn't going to be a gun show location) and you are caught packing, the charge is a misdemeanor. You will be fined, but you won't lose your permit under TCA 39-17-1352.

Meaning no animosity toward those who choose an academic profession (I have a lot of friends in academia), but is this not, at least to a degree, summed up by the old saw that: Those who can - do. Those who can not - teach. It seems to me that there is probably a lot of truth to the author's comment that, "there is considerable evidence that could show conservative self-selection out of academic careers." The lack of conservatives in collegiate teaching circles is probably less an overt bias against them than just having fewer of them to select from among qualified candidates. The qualified conservatives are doing real-world activities, like starting businesses or working in industry, rather than wanting to teach. OTOH, only about half the department heads I know at universities, who largely determine who teaches there, are people I consider competent and unbiased. I've had a number of people who have asked me why I didn't become a professor since I'm fairly bright and grossly over-educated. (Modest too. ) The short answer is that teaching rather than doing stuff in the raw and real world would drive me up the wall. Mixed in with that was a realization that doing what was needed to put myself on “The path up to tenure", as the author calls it, was essentially butt kissing - an activity I never have been willing to do. Few of my college teaching friends have achieved tenure either. They aren't butt kissers. Maybe that is also why they are my friends. Perhaps a question that needs to be asked is how good the education is that the students are receiving from many of their professors who are in their position because they don't want to work in the real world. In my experience, the isolated Ivory Tower stereotype is more real than imagined at many institutions. Perhaps it would be good for parents to investigate the percentages of actual doers to those who imagine doing teaching on the college staff before letting their kids enroll. Colleges are a business who have to attract customers (students) in order to survive. Maybe the customers just need to become more savvy and choose a place of higher education that offers the best real value. A loss of customers will generally make a business re-think its customer service model. That would be really good for a lot of academic institutions.

Sounds like you need a major non-striker fired 357 SIG gun to go with that.

I've played with them, but not shot one. Read the manual from cover to cover. It's a nice handgun.

East Tn TGO Members NOVEMBER 2007 Meet
Marswolf replied to Marswolf's topic in Events and Gatherings
Unfortunately, it is now confirmed that I'll miss this one too. Drat! But y'all have fun and post pictures. -
As I hear it, the "45 GAP" was named the "45 Glock" by Gaston. But SAAMI said no.... Poor Gaston. I see definite uses for the 357 SIG, just as there are definite uses for the 40 S&W. I see no logical reason at all for any state Highway Patrol to go to the 45 GAP. Gotta go search for my copy of Wynonna singing Tell Me Why.

I have a Wilson Combat handgun and of course use WC mags in it. But in all honesty, I've never had a problem with McCormick magazines.

Congratulations on the new purchase. I've suggested this gun to several people who really needed a good non-pistol choice.

Just a quick question. What's wrong with the locks? I have one on the USP, but never engage it. I like the idea of being able to lock the action in case I end up somewhere with a bunch of drunk friends (I used to do Civil War reenacting.... ) and can keep the handgun around loaded and the key on my dog tag chain.

Phantom, how about telling us why you went with Seecamp rather than the other white meat. Maybe a quick comparison - pluses and minuses - comparing the Seecamp and the P3AT.

He may be, but his website is full of gobbledygook and self promotion, with a good dash of theatricality. If I talk to Bill Bass again, I'll try to remember to ask about Montgomery.

As long as your guns and ammo never cross state lines.

Good grief.... Must be dehydration setting in.

Quickest HCP renewal I've ever had
Marswolf replied to hso's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Willis, I think the difference is that you weren't really renewing a permit, although you go through the same steps as a renewal, in converting your Florida permit into a Tennessee one. When we renew our permits, we don't have to surrender the old one while we await the new card. An out of state permit holder does have to surrender their permits. I think we are talking about different situations. My quotation that you may not lawfully carry a weapon until you receive a new permit came from the Tennessee web page you referenced. I've personally never been able to get too excited about automatic knives. As long as I can get the blade out fairly easily, as I can on my covert folder, that's fine with me and no permit is needed. -

As I understand it, if your old permit expires "you may not lawfully carry a weapon until you receive a new permit". The application doesn't serve as a permit to carry, although some LEOs would probably let you get by. So it's a good idea to get the renewal in early enough to receive the new permit. You can do that six months before the old one expires. -
Some of the most fun I ever had in the snow was in Nashville. I was in the Holiday Inn out on Murfreesoro road back in the 80s. Had about 5" of the stuff. Nashville about closed down. I had a Mercury Montego at the time and it could go about anywhere a snowplow could go. Only problem was that most of the restaurants closed down. But Bennigans was just next door. That first night I had a grand time tossing down drinks within walking distance of my room and talking about the snow with some neat people.

If it sticks any I will. Temp is falling fast. Down under 40 degrees now.

Yeah, I renewed mine by mail about this time last year. They even take checks. That surprised me. -
I'm at Blountville and about 1700 feet in elevation. It's snowing like crazy right now. Air temp is heading down, but is still 42 degrees right now. Come on winter wonderland!

Owning both ends of the spectrum - a Rock Island and a Wilson Combat - I have a strange perspective. I've owned several other 1911s along the line, including a couple of military ones. In my experience, Kimber is a decent semi-custom 1911 style handgun. They work pretty well, have decent accuracy and reliability, but I also think they are a bit overpriced. Now, the Wilson is very accurate, but also a bit picky about ammunition. Personally, I don't think it is as reliable as I would want for a carry gun. Sort of a target grade 1911. It really is a custom handgun. Lots of hand-tuning on the thing. That helps explain its outrageous price. But if I was going to go with a gun for accuracy, I'd buy another Wilson. Beautifully finished handgun too (also part of the cost). But the 1911 I have enjoyed the most of all that I have had is the Rock Island. Not just inexpensive, it's also reliable and pretty darn accurate. The cheap price is a nice feature. It's only real downsides are sights you have to get used to in order to love, and the fact that some after market 1911 parts won't fit it. Some of the pins are in just a slightly different location. So that Wilson beaver tail might not fit your RI (it won't).

WD-40 works because it gunks up over time. That would be fine for long term storage. Just clean the pistol before firing it. OTOH, Eezox is designed to prevent corrosion and lubricate the handgun. My personal feeling is that it is better as a non-gunking protectant than a lubricant but it will work in places that have fine blowing dust or sand. For other areas, I prefer a good gun oil or grease.

Going a bit off topic.... One of the problems with out electric power generation nuclear power plants is that they took a technology that made perfect sense for a ship or boat in the 1950s and adapted it for land use. Using water to cool a reactor on something surrounded by water was a fine idea for back then. Doing so on for commercial nuke power makes less sense. My dealings with the nuclear power industry were back in the 70s and 80s. I asked some of the engineers at Carolina Power & Light and TVA about developing a liquid sodium system back then and found out that government regulations made developing pretty much any new system financially prohibitive. Your tax dollars at work....

re-kindled interest - 1851 Navy
Marswolf replied to Mike.357's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Older BP stuff is fun. I don't care for modern BP shooting though. I only have a couple of BP guns. One is a single shot something-or-other that was given to me by the family of a guy who killed himself. No, it wasn't with this gun. Guess I could use it to play pirate. I've never fired it. The other is a Civil War reproduction 3-band Enfield. I mold my own 640 gr Minié ball for it. -
I don't think it is any big secret that nuclear subs have a lot of materials to deaden sound that originates inside the boat. I know from personal experience that the bearings on the propeller shaft are a super high grade so that they will make virtually no noise. If you could hear the reactor and it's power generation equipment, there would be no need for quiet bearings.
