  1. Any light duty spring that will fit that diameter hole can be fit to work. If you don't have any luck finding one give me a PM w/ address and I'll make one up for you n put it in an envelope.
  2. Yes, all the marlin pump guns of this design use a small coil spring under the rear of the firing pin. its under the bottom edge of the pin where the hammer hits it. The spring is a key part in keeping the bolt in battery until the hammer strikes the firing pin inward, which allows the lock to unlatch the bolt. One thing to examine closely is the receiver recoil block. This is the stub of metal that the bolt lock transfers recoil to. If many hi vels were shot threw the gun, the front shoulder of this recoil contact face will have a peened edge protruding. If its mild, it should still fire OK but in a bad case, there will be too much head space making ignition issues and possible extracting issues as well. The receivers are soft in all of these Marlins. I had one that was so bad, only a spot of mig weld and refitting the lock put it back into shoot ability. Good Luck with your 47. If its minty shape, they can fetch a grand or more!
  3. Welcome, Great little Café in town there, cheap n good! Iv read if you put in for an 07 FFL the BATFE will want you to get your ITAR permit at $2350 annual hit. Not sure about 01's but if you do virtually any real gunsmithing, the Feds require the permit.... freakin BO gestopo bull crap.
  4. I hear your distain for the north east. We moved here from the Catskill mountains of NY a couple of years ago and just today read a piece on how the Mayor and city Council of Kingston NY have passed a resolution to become a sanctuary city. Going up for a full vote this month. Back in Colonial times Kingston was partly burned down by the British for supporting the Continentals. Now the migration of city libs have destroyed the freedoms we used to enjoy up there as you well know. Funny how things here feel so much like 40 years ago where I grew up. Years ago I put a bumper sticker on my truck & son's car that read " Why experiment on Animals when there are so many Democrats" with a drawing of a Chimp. Some libtard ripped it off his bumper and the paint with it. This is the brand of AH's that have infested the country. Happy retirement to you here in America!
  5. Just the other day I was looking at a new TN atlas road map in Walmart that is imposed on Topo. With Christmas here I didn't have the 20 bucks it cost. Once I get straightened out after Fed taxes, I'll have to own one.
  6. About 18 months ago I had a similar decision to make between a CZ75 compact or a Kahr K40 black stainless. The Kahr won out. Since its primary roll was a CCW, the K40 edged out the CZ in weight and size plus a tad more slide panel to grab with a short smoother trigger. The feel of the CZ was very temping tho. Like you, im not a fan of the Glock looks. And the tiny frame nubs that guide the slide is just not my idea of a heavy duty design. A part time cop friend of mine once asked me about the metal filings he was finding on both his Glocks slide rails & frame. I urged him to mail one back to Glock. They said it was normal wear. They may be good guns but I'll stick with old world full rail contact autos. Good luck with what ever you decide on.
  7. If it has the short SMLE box mag, know those are really rare today. You can make some $$ on that if you want to sell it.
  8. No need for Marines here. They are trained to kill.....too good a deal. In the prison system where I came from it's legal to put an individual into what is called a "bent wrist come along" to gain compliance. Essentially, its a position of total control of his body by applying a firm rearward bend to all the fingers and wrist. It's fantastically pain full to put the knuckles and wrist in such a position that can result in broken finger joints and small bones. This sort of damage will last for a whole lota Christmas's as a reflection on the responsibility of ones actions......... THEN let the Marine have em!
  9. As we all know, ever instance of a shooting can be vastly different than another but in these statistics, there does appear to be a pattern. I think you guys will get a kick out of this if you have not yet seen this compilation. http://www.handloads.com/misc/stoppingpower.asp?Caliber=0
  10. Im not up on all the new configurations that come out these days, so when my brother inlaw over in VA asked my opinion on a first gun for carry & target, I pulled up GB on what used to what I would buy and was pleasantly surprised by the S&W 686 + 3" ! Well now, I don't have a 357 and thought I really don't need one but after looking over that offering, I gotta say its on my bucket list now. Iv been a fan of 3" carry for decades and finaly my fav S&W 357 model is alive & well in a 3". You can see what they get for a vintage short run 66 in 3". As for the Ruger SP and Security Six guns.... not so much. Back when I used to do a lot of trigger work, the pile of castings that are touched up to spec inside a Ruger never came close to the superior "Old World" machined lock works of the Smiths. S&W has come along with castings also these days but lock work for lock work, I would take the strain screw leaf powered Smith over a coil powered Ruger in this frame size. Not that the Ruger cant have a decent pull wise tuned trigger, they just don't "feel" as nice cycling as a well worked Smith IMO. Yup that new 686 sure is a sweet hart!
  11. ^ I agree w/ all the above. On a lot of old guns its a plus to have some "been their done that" on em! Good work.
  12. Something to consider is if at all have him fire a few models befor he buys one. I sold a Ruger BH 7.5 inch not long ago and still have a 6" S&W 29 and SAA JP Sauer in 5.5" . The grip style and barrel length make a huge difference in recoil as you may know. The big Redhawk's are kittens to fire compaired to a Black Hawk and that can make the difference in a clean kill for a lot of shooters. But now just how much weight is he willing to carry around since a Redhawk tops the scales in a 44. Good Luck!
  13. As far as considering an instantly fatal hit vs death due to a bleed out, I once read an extensive wound evaluation of culled African animals. The study wanted to find out why when all mechanics are virtualy the same, why some animals run while others drop dead instantly. The conclusion was linked to what cycle the heart was in when there was bullet impact. If the bullets hydraulic shock wave happened when the heart was in full contracted compression, the brain cells of the animal were in a state of massive hemorrhage. Those animals died almost instantly in every case. Despite the same caliber and impact zone, animals that shone no damaged brain tissue were always the runners upon bullet impact. These "runners" were thought to have been shot while the heart was in the non compression cycle. Anyone who has run heavy equipment hydraulics as I have would more than likely have no issues with this study. Makes perfect sense!
  14. Yes, Welcome. I feel the same way about the "one of's" . Google xtriggerman and see some of my franken guns. Its a fun hobby for sure.
  15. Welcome fellow refugee! We moved here 26 months ago from Ulster county NY for exactly the same reasons. Being mountain folks, I needed elevation and find the 2000' elevation of the Cumberland plateau just right. Up to 8 deg. cooler than Cookeville in mid summer and same for winter. The elevation keeps the humidity to a bearable level. Here in Crossville, one third of the population moved here since 2000 so I have had zero kick back unlike some other areas you may encounter regardless of your way of thinking. All the gun lovers here at our new Church have all been outstanding First Rate Americans! God... how we Love "This" country. The worst thing is a lot of folks cant imagine how bad the libs have destroyed the other parts of our Nation. Credit must be given to the TN native forefathers for their social beliefs. Otherwise TN would not be the TN we can enjoy today as newbs. Welcome! Oh, Citydata .com is your friend on stats. You will find presidential voting results there per county going back a number of cycles.
  16. There is no easy way here. If the stock has numerous scrapes in the stock, you can try to hump it up with 00 steel wool and go over the entire stock with your choice of finishes but no matter what you put on even if you had the original mix, you would still have a "humped up" finish job. Reason... first the wood and finish is heavily faded, break the surface of either and you get a slightly different shade with any new finish. secondly all the raw wood areas would need to be "whiskered" before finish is applied to end up with a factory smooth finish over those repair spots and whiskering requires sanding into the wood beyond the faded surface. So then there you would have depressions on every repair spot along with a bright walnut color. My suggestion to you seeing the rest of the gun, is rub the stock out with the 00 steel wool and then get your self a bottle of True Oil and target each scrape and dig with a thick blob of True oil and let that soak in and repeat until those areas are picking up a bit of a shine. That will tell you they are sealed. Lightly sand those repaired areas with 220 grit paper until you have leveled off the excess finish. Then go at the entire stock lightly with 00 steel wool, then 000 a bit more aggressively and then apply a few "thin" hand rubbed True Oil coats. True Oil is the easiest finish to work with. It dries quickly within a day or 2 and builds fast due to its heavier viscosity than the others. To break its final coats of shine a simple go over with 0000 is all that's needed to bring it to a duller sheen. After the first couple of rubbed coats, you will know if its what you want. Otherwise, its sand, sand, sand and whisker the entire stock and lay down a new glow to some old walnut.
  17. Nice old Mossy. You don't see the full stocked guns very much these days and it even still has the original rear sight! Well, from the looks of the metal, I would first just rub the hell out of all the blued area's with WD40 and 0000 steel wool. If the rusted area's are still lumped with oxidation, go to rub those areas out specifically with FLITZ. That has some very fine abrasive that if rubbed hard enough on bluing, it will lighten the blue a tad. Once all the rubbing has been wiped clean and oiled, Only then would I make a determination to sand or not sand off all the bluing and cold blue the works. You may not need nothing more than a touch up blue here and there as the pitting may not be all that deep. Nice project tho... good luck with it.
  18. JAB, I understand your view as someone who worked in Mental Health. The unfortunate thing is ANY kind of regulating power of "Government" can lead to absurd over regulation and there will be little anyone can do to stop it once its on a roll. One of my top reasons for moving here was to get away from exactly that kind of thing in regard to firearm ownership. The clearest example of witch is the NYS S.A.F.E. act. This excerpt is in response to how the Gov will weed out mental defectives from owning firearms. If an individual goes in to a clinic for any reason what so ever and says anything "offensive" in most any way, the Dr. right down to a "clinical social worker" can file a report with the Office of Mental Health that that individual posses a possible physical risk to others. That report can generate a "Probable Cause" document giving the State Police the right to enter that individual's home and remove all his/hers firearms. Further more as stated in this link, Those who have the power to generate the report are exonerated from any civil court action by the accused. This is SOOOO wrong on so many levels that you just cant make this **it up. This is the result of 12 million NYC voters on 330 square miles beating down the 8 million who live on the other 54,000 Sq. miles of NYS. Here is the confusion generated within the Gov by the Gov. Un freakin believable! http://www.nyspsych.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=73:the-safe-act--guidelines-for-complying&catid=41:safe-act&Itemid=140 I for one am happy with the TN HCP and the 38 states it covers for now. I learned a few things in the class as well as reading the posts here at TGO. I do infact have a personal belief that today's democrat voters are mostly atheists at heart. Control of the physical world is as far as their belief system will allow them to go.
  19. First thing to check is the barrel nut. If its not tight, it will shotgun the groups. Also the hand guard bolts are finicky in getting the hand guard to the right tension without much pressure on the receiver. Most of those bolts get swapped out for the swivel studded bolt. When tightened properly, there should be a tiny bit of forward to back play by way of original design of that double treaded bolt. Now these guns have very over pressured gas systems and simply don't do well at all as they get warm from as little as 3 rounds fired. As for the dinged case mouth, Some of these will do that out of the box. If this one was not known to do it before, scrub the gas cylinder and gas port extension. If the tolerance there has gotten fowled, that would speed up the bolt cycling speed making it a tad more violent on the case ejection. Don't forget to make sure the scope base is still tight also.
  20. Another way is to anneal the drill area by using a #3 oxy/acet torch and bring the spot to be drilled to an orange dot, let air cool. The Eddystones were good candidates for this treatment.
  21. Keep in mind many of the cheaper 28's will be built on 20 gauge or even 12 gauge sized receivers so they will be heavier than need be. Not so with the CZ. They share the 410 receivers. They are very light and swing up like a dream. Always wanted one and 28 is what I would get also.
  22. Heres what Bud's has. There are a few below your price range but I have to say the $900 they want for a CZ is a very good price for the quality of those guns. Either the CZ SS or OU are just super old world quality in a plastic world. Its worth a trip to Buds to look them over. They are just behind Smoky Mountain knife works and they happen to have great prices on ammo by the case.... better than bud's https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/firearm_search.php/caliber/10000549/v/1/sort/1a/28+Gauge
  23. ^^^^ Thank You...... threw the eyes of detailed reality. For what its worth, I brought 4 new conservative/libertarian leaning votes to my new home state here. And yes, you need to be concerned about the new city populations growth. The cancer normally always starts in the cities. "When we get piled upon one another in large cities as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe" Thomas Jefferson Also, since Iv already been bashed as that DY from the north, most of the locals I talked to here have no idea how thankful they should be to their forefathers for keeping their counties "diverse-less" all those years ago. I had a belie full of Diversity in the Prison system. Most folks don't seem to know how good they have it here!
  24. In my case, you couldn't be more wrong. Im from a place that's far, far more rural than here. As I got older, my conservative votes became absolutely worthless due to city folks moving to the back woods. I understand exactly what your point is. I lived it up close and personal. If CC comes to TN fine, You guys think Im going to stop it or fight it coming in? Wow, Funny thing is, I felt that same way you all feel about it until I was in close contact with "stupid" too many times. Maybe I'm wrong about a good NRA sanctioned training course as a litmus test. We are all potential militia according to the Constitution and rightly so. WE are homeland security and as such I don't agree with restricting FA weapons or all the other nonsence of NFA since the Gov has them. So who the heck you all think your dealing with is now blown way, way, out of proportion. I just don't want to get shot by some nit wit who has little to no idea on how to manage his weapon. And the answer to that has always been a responsibility issue. Where is the best place to get it? from your Dad when you are little maybe like I had shown my little ones why you never play with real guns by deer wounds and ice blocks blowning up from a 44m hit. It worked for me but there are a **it load of single parents here in TN that is never a good thing. Then on the other hand, there are too dam many people on the planet as is so if we loose a few due to stupid every now and again, their number was going to be up weather by gun or car or tree. I'll say it AGAIN, Training is never going to be a catch all in misshaps we all can agree on that. There will always be a level of irresponsibility in everything, I understand that as we all do. I just happen to "like" training. I think it does in fact bring non gun folks up to the realization of the responsibility they are undertaking. There was one old woman at my HCP class that was asked to come back simply because she couldn't hit the target....at all. I wish ALL folks had the good sense to at least have friends get them to the point of hitting what your looking at. Only one guy backed me up here on this sort of thing and sadly, no one seconded the Eddy Eagle program. Loosen your shorts up folks, they sky isn't falling!
  25. Good questions, I would like to see no constraints on concealed carry, nation wide and have the NRA set the standards for a handgun course that proves competency along with safe handling and control of a weapon in public places and all the legal ramifications of a shooting within the state of residency. The NRA has been teaching these things longer than any one alive here. Once the back round check and NRA course has been completed successfully, the New HCP person should have zero restrictions on his desire to carry any where. If it goes stupid after that, we can at least say, we as a people exercised every reasonable effort to highlight the great responsibility of carrying a deadly weapon. The government should have little to do with the system aside from making firearm safety mandatory in grade school such as they did with Eddy Eagle here in Cumberland county. The nearly 5000 kids that went threw the class loved it from the parental reports I'v heard. JMHO.
