Mars, it goes beyond that. It is true that the Vietnam generation had little respect for their parents, the WW2 generation (at least until recently). WHat the book points out is not intergenerational conflict but the very real change in education and values, largely prompted by the internet and the new technology of instant communication. It had been the idea that these things would lead to people being more knowledgeable since knowledge was so easy to get. In fact what has happened is that experience and opinion have been elevated above facts and reasoning. Some of the posts you deleted showed this admirably. I haven't looked into it too much but I would bet YouTube and Myspace are filled with personal information about soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq, as if the war were simply a more dangerous version of "My Summer Vacation." There were very real, international issues at stake in the war, whatever side one wants to take. But defining it as the sum experience of the grunts on the ground nullifies all of that and cheapens debate over it.

Disarmed when stopped by the police?
The Rabbi replied to Fallguy's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
In Metro there is some benefit to officers having one. Had someone tell me the other day and I cannot remember what it was. Possibly if you have one you can whatever you want off duty. If not then you are limited to dept approved weapons. -
I think he said $400 and the Judge will probably run more than that. It happens I have a 4" version arriving today.

That is truly preaching to the choir on this site. But here's the TNGOP zinging it to Michelle Obama: http://www.youtube.com/tennesseeGOP I have to say, while I'm happy to see them playing hardball I would think they could come up with something more substantive. There are so many excellent reasons to oppose Obama just on his policies, that no one has to mention the most Rev Wright or his wife's new-found pride. Maybe if they focused on Obama's plan to socialize medicine here, or raise taxes, or go meet with bloodthirsty lying dictators then voters would get some idea how bad an Obama presidency would be.

Any markings on it? That would be a start.

Inexpensive and reliable. What more could you ask for. You'll get some debate about .380 as a self defense round but I think it's fine for up close and personal. Look at the CC model. I was very impressed with it.

The Rabbi replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Yes. The law stipulates a girl's first gun should be a pink AR..... -

I assume they all are. Any time I get someone obviously trying a straw purchase I think they're just ATF. I mean, no one can be that stupid, can they?
-
Yup. Deuce-deuce=.22LR Deuce-five=.25acp Fo'-five=.45acp Old school=old fashioned

It's one of those things that sounds great and useful and all. But really it sounds like a way to expand first gov't involvement and then gov't control. What will they do with the info collected? What kinds of things will be collected? Who will have access to the info? Biometric IDs, anyone?

I need to put out a glossary: Smiff n Western=Smith & Wesson Glock .380=Hi Point .380 Nine millimeter=.380 ....
-
It's been kinda slow around here. So here's my call of the day. -Eastside -Yeah, you got any Smiff and Western nine millimeters there? -I have one. -How much is that going for? -It's 299. -OK. Now I just flew down here from Maryland and I lost my ID on the plane. I'm staying in a hotel. What would you need from me to get this? -You need to be a TN resident. -Uh, OK. -Have a good one.

I beg to differ. It isnt that people are imbeciles. Some of them are, obviously. It is that there is a substitute of "factoids" for deeper thinking skills. How many times has someone made an argument only to have someone else rebut it by saying "cite me a reference" and then when it is a news story, it is dismissed as unreliable? So the result is people throw factoids at each other. There is very little actual argument going on.

Thread should have been titled "I like it big and pink".....

Passengers with HCP and car gets pulled over
The Rabbi replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Bingo. And it is situational. If I were pulled over at 10PM and I knew I had a gun in the glove box I would tell the officer I've got a permit and a weapon in the glove box, how do you want me to proceed. That's not so much being nice as self-preservation. -
Has your attitude towards guns changed?
The Rabbi replied to The Rabbi's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
yeah, but this isnt the only state in the Union (unfortunately). Go to TX and your permit is valid but dont expose your weapon even inadvertently or you'll be arrested and charged. -
You probably trade in guns in gun shops all the time. That's certainly barter and really little different from paying cash. No restriction at all. As for tax implication, meh. If you buy a gun at a show and resell it to a buddy for more money, you're supposed to report that. I dont think too many people do.

Has your attitude towards guns changed?
The Rabbi replied to The Rabbi's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Has that ever happened to anyone? I always was nervous about that too (still am). But I think people don't want to see a gun (unless they are carrying themselves) and so unconsciously block it out. I keep thinking if I see someone carrying I'll blurt out "Oh god, he's got a gun!" and see what happens. -
Has your attitude towards guns changed since you began carrying? I have been carrying daily for over 8 years now. In the beginning the gun seemed somehow more important, putting it on was an act of risk that required a lot of thought. Today I don't consider it much more than a cell phone. And the idea that a gov't somewhere would want to tell me whether and how and when I can carry makes about as much sense as telling me how I can use my cell phone.

New book out. Here is the Amazon review: It's absolutely the case. Seeing on-line discussions, people have no idea how to weigh evidence or make appropriate deductions from statements or facts. Often they can't even read and understand the argument. It is probably more pronounced in people under 30 but by no means limited to them.

Passengers with HCP and car gets pulled over
The Rabbi replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
It would be instructive to know where the incident happened. I would think it would be rare in TN where cops are pretty used to private citizens with guns. A place like MI, no telling. Which brings up my point: I see no upside to presenting the permit, only a downside. OK, I went and read the thread. Nevada. And the SOB isnt with the dept anymore (of his own volition). I'd recommend anyone to read that thread and the comments with it. I will say that anyone drawing a weapon on me for no reason is presenting a threat.
