I need recommendations for a defensive shotgun.
Jamie Jackson replied to bird333's topic in Long Guns
LOL, Well Red certainly has a shotgun that encompasses the attributes you looking for. :up: To better understand the affect of distance and use at various distances when a shotgun is deployed you might like to take a look at John Marr's "In The Defense of the Shotgun" Excellent article, please pay particular attention to his explanation regards shotgun "Zones". http://www.officer.com/article/10249128/in-defense-of-the-shotgun A slug is generally chosen for the "C" zone when the spread of buckshot becomes too wide for reliable aimed impact...you move into the zone of requiring rifle-like accuracy. Pellet Size Chart There are several videos on YouTube where you can see a select slug drill being performed. Chris Costa certainly has some decent shotgun videos on there. (Costaludus). -

I don't think a person can go wrong with either an 870 or a Mossberg 590. My preference is the 590...mainly because of the location of the safety atop the grip area. It lends itself to running the shotgun with either hand. But I run a traditional stock. The Mossberg safety location doesn't work well with a pistol grip configuration stock. Dual action bars should be considered in any pump action shotgun for durability. I have tritium ghost ring sights on mine. I run a sidesaddle loaded with buckshot and a butt-cuff loaded with slugs. It's relatively heavy, but mitigates recoil. A sling is advisable...it's the equivalent of a holster for your shotgun and there are times when, administratively, you'll be glad you included one. I don't know what region of TN you are located in, but you are welcome to give mine a try if you find yourself in the Knoxville or Oak Ridge area. There's some excellent training being offered in our area the end of this month as well (by our own Randy Harris)...you can find the info in the "Tactics and Training" area of this forum. There is a lot of mythology surrounding shotguns, quality training dispels those myths and is an excellent investment in yourself imho. Good luck with your choice. -
LOL. To a large degree it's liability and excessive use of force on the continuum. If lethal force is justified, it's justified. Striking tools are a less than lethal, or less lethal option...ideally. ASP and Monadok teach Red and Green zones...Green are a "go", Red are potentially lethal. Hence the requirement for certification. My apologies for the thread drift. edited for punctuation...

The current law on impact weapons requires a recognized training certification, such as ASP or Monadnock. I keep a copy of the below in my wallet along with a copy of my certificate. TN State Law: 39-17-1308 (9) By any person possessing a club or baton who holds a certificate that the person has had training in the use of a club or baton for self-defense that is valid and issued by a certified person authorized to give training in the use of clubs or batons, and is not prohibited from purchasing a firearm under any local, state or federal laws;

BREAKING Better buy all the 5.45 you can find
Jamie Jackson replied to mcordell's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
On one hand I agree with what you're saying. We have to choose our fights wisely. Heck..I don't even own an AK in this caliber... but it's still the chipping away of our rights, one little piece at a time, that bugs me. -

True...but it's a far cry more than the NRA is doing... Unfortunately, "We the People" aren't doing our job either...we keep re-electing the same asshats. :squint: -
Welcome to TN Adam. :up:

Defensive Knife June 29 Knoxville
Jamie Jackson replied to Cruel Hand Luke's topic in Training Discussions
We are incredibly fortunate to have a class of this type available to us in East TN. Randy is a great guy and gifted instructor. I legally carried a handgun (or two) and a pocket knife (Spyderco) for 12 years before taking my first Defense against Edged weapons class in 2002. I was, delusionally, under the impression, "Heck, if they pull a knife I'll just shoot 'em". I thought..."Hell, I went to Gunsite...I'm fine" :squint: I was ignorant. Not stupid...I just didn't know, what I didn't know... Around 2000 I was able to pick up a copy of "Surviving Edged Weapons" from Calibre Press...it was only sold to Law Enforcement at the time. It was a paradigm shift for me. Then while a member of a training group out of Baton Rouge we ran the "Tueller" and "The Magliato drill" for time...participants aging from 20 yr old to 50 yr old...it was an eye opener for sure. I've since taken several knife defense classes. This offering is a bargain. The material is invaluable...And it's local. Investing in yourself, your knowledge and skills, is always money well spent. In case anyone is interested a good Tueller drill (Scenario from Best Defense) with Mike Janich and Mike Seeklander is available on Youtube, as well as the entire "Surviving Edged Weapons". -

GOA finally moved on it. I found this e-mail alert this morning. Link below. Lawless Obama Shreds More Constitutional Protections for Steel Core 5.45x39 Ammo Wednesday, 02 April 2014 20:18 Written by Gun Owners https://gunowners.org/alert422014.htm -
I'm with JAB on this. I am always pleased when any restriction and abuse of personal choice and freedom is removed. After all, the Second Amendment says, to paraphrase, "The Right of the People to Keep and Bear arms Shall Not Be Infringed." I carry a couple of "waved" folders daily...but my preference is a fixed blade knife. I've carried a Clinch Pik for several years, and I'm certain I'll continue to do so. But I'd also like to be able to carry a more general use fixed blade, along the lines of one of my Mora's, without having to be concerned about it. JAB mentioned training, and I personally think that since many of the tools we carry may well be pressed into a self defense role, Professional Training is a great idea. ...Knife or Gun...It certainly dispels many myths.

Exactly 10-Ring; There is no officer discretion involved. In my case it wasn't valid...but there are circumstances where that discretion would certainly be applicable. The cameras were/are a revenue scam and remain a PIA in Knoxville. Good for Oak Ridge ! :up:

When? Great news btw. :up: The only flipping ticket I've received in 35 years came from those flipping cameras when they were 1st installed. I'm guilty...I was going at least 5 miles and hour over the limit... :squint:
