    GUN STORE RANT

Sound like he didn't have that "salesman tac". I had an experience at Frontier Firearms. I called and asked about a certain gun and was told..."yeah, I think we have it, but it's at the other end of the counter and I can't get to it. You are welcome to come in and look at it." She sounded a little rushed and the phone call ended. I think, at times, it's just a poor choice of words that cause things like this. I KNOW that she didn't mean for it to come out the way it did. A simple "let me take your name and number and I'll call ya back" would have been just fine. I don't hold what happened against them. In fact I went out Monday and looked around and was treated great. While walking around the store I listened to some of the questions being asked. I could tell most knew the anwser when they asked the question, but the staff still played the game. I think we all have to remember not every gun counterman reads Guns and Ammo. Getting to anwser customers questions at work I have run into "that guy"a few time. A fella that has degree from some huge college, with a I know more than you attitude. Most of the time you play the game and it makes them feel good and you move on. Then there are times you are backed into a corner and you are forced to put them in their place. This happens at every retail place. Had a guy one time that was just over the top with everything. He let me know he was a engineer with ORNL and he was smart. He told me the proplem he was having was due to poor engineering. I told him every problem is due to poor engineering. Silence, could of heard a pin drop. The problem could have been fixed much faster with just easy conversation. He forced me to treat him as an equal. This seems to happen more in the "if I yell loud enough I can get what I want" world. The fact is anybody can get poor service and anybody can cause poor service.
  2. I own one of the White Gold Medallion .300wim mag's. The BOSS is loud! I only put about 50 rounds down the pipe before putting it in the safe. I like the rifle but never take it out. You gotta heck of a buy.

    AR 15, .223 vs .308

If I wanted to deer hunt with an AR platform the 308 would be my choice. If ya like coyote/bobcat hunting, punching paper, or just burning powder the .223 would work just fine. Just my .02cents

    FN SLP?

Let us know how you like it. I've been looking also, but I might go with a Mossberg 930 just because of the price. Seems you can't find used ones very easy at all.
  5. What camera did you shoot with? Is that a 70-200 lens?
  6. I don't care for Ronnie Smith Outdoors. He may be the best fella in the world, but when I hear him talk it makes me wanna change to another station. I could be wrong but it seems he tries too hard to be country. I can hear him now.....Booooy thayt big ol Buuuck comed rite uda my stayend.
  7. couple good days This one I trapped this season
  8. Looks like a good hide too. I love to hunt em. Great job!!
  9. I'm a fan of the .243. I've killed a lot of deer with that round. My son got one for his 10th birthday and he still shoots it at the age of 16. I know you said bolt gun, but think of a Thompson Center in .44mag. The .44mag would fit a young (6 or 7 year old) kid real well. For an older kid a .243 would be my choice.
  10. Talking to people is the best way to gain property to hunt. Last weekend I was driving down a road near the lake. I pulled over and talked to a fella fixing fence. In about 20min or so I had a new place to hunt. Now it's not the best property, but this guy knows everyone around him. This may help with other land owners. Check the regs before hunting WMA's. For most WMA's if deer season is out you are limited to rimfire and shotgun. If you want to practice do it at home. If you call in hawks, crow, dogs, etc. you are doing it right. Scout your hunting areas before calling.

    Bow buck

Did you kill it on the ORNL hunt?
  12. I've looked around the net and figured out I have a Potsdam musket. Looks like a 70 something caliber. Anybody know much about them?
  13. That's all I was trying to say. Not knocking ya. I hope that's not the way you took it.
  14. I can remember at least three I took that didn't have exit wounds. Two taken with a Knight ML with 100gr charge and one with an Encore and 150gr charge. I don't know if it hit a rib just right or what, all I know is it can happen. I've had others that just fell straight down and never moved at all. One of the three deer taken ran less than 50 yards and ended up in some real thick stuff. I never heared the crash because of the noise the other deer made running off. The only way I knew I hit her was a small bit of hair I found. She was shot with the Encore, 150gr of powder and shockwave sabot. When I got down I just knew there would be blood everywhere, but there was none. My hunting partner made the statement "that extra powder didn't help much". End result was all the deer were recovered, it just took longer than I wanted.
  15. Two Colts and a Springfield. One of the Colts would fail on about the same round every time. I didn't own the pistols, I only got to shot them. One was owned by a good friend of mine. He bought it new and sold it soon after because of this problem.
  16. Most of the time a long shot with a ML will not have a exit wound and thus will not have a blood trail. I shot one at 30 yards that didn't leave a trail. I found it 100 yards away with the wound side up and the bullet just under the hide on the off side. After finding the deer and backtracking the trail it only bled the last 20 yards. I almost gave up on finding it, but I got lucky and it ended up in the freezer. As far as the heart rate thing, it happens, that's what keeps you going back. A little trick you might use is...before you shoot... tense up your entire body. Try to use up some of the adrenaline your body has buit up. Then take a deep breath, relax, and squeeze. It works for some, but not everybody. Good job on the doe.
  17. I admit I've caught the 1911 bug. I don't believe it's the most reliabel handgun on the market by any means. I've shot a few and had ftf with each one. For some reason, I still want one. Been looking around and just can't seem to land one. Anyway, the article does make you look at things in a different light. For me, a high round count is 1500-2000 rounds, he talks about 10,000-20,000 rounds. If I've shot that many rounds through one handgun and it's starts to have problems I'll buy another one. I think a big part of the 1911 craze is the ability to custimize almost every part of the gun. I think that's what draws me to one, the ability to buy parts and tinker.
  18. I've never owned a Trijicon, but I have the Leupold 6x24. The Leupold is a 50mm with a fine duplex, it's great for open field hunting and target practice, but not that great for close woods hunting, the power is a lil too much. I also have a Nikon, it's a lower power and I love it just for hunting. I bought the Leupold from a place called Skyoptics, at the time it was the best price I could find.
  19. I like the action pics. What lense where you using? was it a 70-200? Low f#? I like the brass coming out of the rifle with the shooter just out of focus.
  20. A fellow hunter was given a ticket and had his ammo taken after being pulled over for speeding two years ago. I know things have changed, but he was more than nice when pulled over. He didn't know about the federal land laws so it was his fault. I would like the law to say YES you can carry or NO you can't carry. No grey area
  21. +1 for easterncoyotes.com go to youtube and do a search for crow creek productions. I've had the chance to hunt with Rich a couple of times, nice fella.
  22. I believe you are correct. I've noticed things about the rifle that made me think it had work done to it. After looking a little harder the 11 57 is really 11557. It matches the number 11557 thats on the bolt. So the action and bolt have the same ser#, that's a good thing. Thanks for the help.
  23. I thought British also, but it has no manufactures name or caliber markings. The only other markings I can find is in front of the trigger guard, it says 11 57. The barrel is about 17-18 inches long. The total length of the rifle seems short. Feel free to repost the pics if you want. If need be I can seed you more pictures. Thanks Mike
  24. Sorry I didn't mean I had more tip ups. My post wasn't as clear as it should have been. I was trying to say I had other rifles that I didn't know much about and I would post pics just to find out info on them. The first rifle has only a few markings on it. The bolt has a marking of "BM" on it. I don't see any names or caliber markings. The second is a Marlin 88 that looks to be in good condition. And the last is a Stevens 59a 410 bolt action. I just like the looks of a bolt action shotgun
