Looking for sub-compact recommendations
Jonnin replied to martinjd's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The 82 is a nightmare to work on, with about 4 or 5 times the parts. Its bigger and fatter but that is due to high cap on the width. The cz is similar to a 75 in a lot of ways (not as big of course). The shape and all are very different. That said the 82 is an excellent pistol. Its pretty much what you would expect from a cz. CZ might be slightly cheaper, depends on what you find for the maks really, some cost more than others. I prefer the mak, its fits my hands better, seems to recoil less, fits in a pocket (the cz won't), but most of my preferences are just opinion. Both are very good. -

Well take a look at a makarov then. - all steel - cheap! (possibly under 300?) - legendary accuracy and reliability and durability - can be found in 380 if you prefer, but less commonly - 9x18 is virtually same as 380 & costs about the same as 9mm, or less when supply is good (so its much cheaper than 380 usually and plenty of self defense rounds available including hornady and buffalo bore and more) - DA/SA trigger is decent typical military / berettaish feel - there is a double stack model but mags are expensive & rare. The regular single stack mags fit with rattle. - heel mounted mag release (ambidex but takes getting used to). -
What about the child? I agree with not me, not you, not the judge, or anyone else. Does the child have the right to a reasonable name?

Facial Profiling causes Duck Dynasty's Jase to be kicked out of NYC Hotel
Jonnin replied to a topic in General Chat
Those RACISTS!! This is exactly the sort of thing Oprah just had to deal with but I NEVER THOUGHT it could happen in the USA!! Clearly, he was racially profiled to be unable to afford the hotel rates! Someone needs to get on this PRONTO! -
well let me disabuse you on that :) My wifes eaa witness is a basic model and it is as accurate as anything I have shot in 9mm. Wife had the sights replaced with high quality target sights (still iron, but good iron) and it is every bit as good as my CZ. BOTH are very good. Neither one is camp perry 1911 quality, but they are both as good as anything short of a very expensive target pistol. I would bet either of us could hit a clay at 50 yards with either pistol without a lot of effort. The default sights on the cheaper Eaa are not awesome. This could be part of any "accuracy complaints" you may have read, though the vast majority of people can't shoot their way out of a paper bag and most pistol accuracy comments are worth less the the pixels they took up. Its really hard to make a quarter sized group with half inch wide site blades. The parts do NOT interchange at all, for sure.

I wish I could send you ours. It has rained daily for weeks here give or take a couple of off days. I can't remember a wetter year in decades.

There are many. Fewer if you insist upon new guns, but still plenty. Lets narrow it on down some! Do you mean STEEL and HEAVY metal guns, or just "Metal" as defined by the periodic table? Do you care what caliber at all? Do revolvers count? Are you open to used/old guns (like a makarov?) Metal guns cost more. Just like anything made of metal costs more than its plastic counterpart. The only cheap metal guns are milsurp. Got a max price in mind? Do you have a max size (long, high, and wide) in mind? Do you want a POCKET pistol? Are you trying to avoid DAO pistols (most of the small guns are DAO) ? If so, your choices are very limited, and if you also do not care for a used pistol (old guns) your choices are even less. -
Somehow we went from a kid being able to make up their own mind that their name (lets call the example child "wasted-sperm jones") is offensive to mob rule and anarchy and dictatorships. All I said was that Wasted-Sperm (not his teacher, not his cousin, not his buddy, not some random idiot off the street) himself, finding his name to be offensive and to generally degrade his self image and quality of life, should be able to do something about BEFORE he reaches the insane high age of 18. 18 years is way, way too long to live out one's life being referred to as Wasted-Sperm. I think 6-8 years is more than long enough for the kid to decide that something needs to be done, and he should have a way to do by that age IF and ONLY IF he wants to and IF and ONLY IF the majority of randomly selected people on a jury agree that his name is beyond the pale. If that is too much common sense to ask for, well, we knew america was doomed years ago. If this infringes on the freedoms of the parents, I do not see it. At some point, the kid has some rights too. And those rights come before age 18 IMHO. If you really read what I said, all I am really saying is to allow the reduction of the age at which a name can be changed under specific circumstances (the individual with the name is desperate to get it changed, and a majority of randomly selected adults agree with the kid). I am all about the libertarian stuff until it affects other people, but here, the right of the parents to name the kid has to stop when it reaches a point that the kid is now a subject of ridicule and torment and so on to the point that its quality of life is affected. If the parents want to rename themselves to whatever awful name, I am all for it. What I did not agree with is renaming the child on behalf of anyone else (only the child can register the complaint). I did not allow for the judge to provide a new name (the child or parents must produce this). It is not so much telling parents what they CAN name the child as telling them what they CANNOT name the child and forcing an alternative to be suggested. Unfortunately, these sorts of things really need to be --- because without them, it won't be long before we DO see names like G**D*** M***FK** Smith or worse.

They are extremely similar, including the grip design. Just from pictures, the grips look to be about the same, as does the frame and overall shape etc. The DE is probably a little more pricy and possibly a little better made (dunno, my DE is IMI made and its a tank, not sure about the new stuff). But both look like fine pistols and they are so close I would just go for the one you can find to buy.

seeing the cz82/83 and 75s mentioned, that begs a look at the rami. Its 9mm or 40, about the same size as the 82, the in-between model. I like mine a lot, its just over too large for a pocket. There is a steel version I think, or once was. And the option to cock&lock with a trigger job can make it SA like (though trigger remains sloppy) or you can treat it as a DA/SA.

The one that gets me is the beer sign. "You must be born on or before today in ... what???? 1992??!!

That is why 12 would decide, when normally a judge alone could do it, as I said. If 7/12 people think the name is idiotic, that is good enough for me. The kid and parents can then submit new names to the 12 until 7/12 approve the new name. That should limit the stupidity. I dunno maybe not the best idea, but a kid has to have SOME way to protest and apparently we can't have a single activist judge making the decision. Actually if I had my way judges would make NO decisions beyond applying the sentence after a conviction and maintaining order in the process, but that is another story. The biggest issue would be wasting courtroom time on nonsense ---- oh wait. Actually a kid's name is more important than probably 30% of the crap taken to court.

I would say 308 because the ammo is more common. I am a little bigger than your boy (6 foot and 185) and I admit it: full 308 loads (factory) in my lever action (same would be true of a bolt action) is stout recoil. Its a handful to practice with (shooting many times). A box of 20+ is a good chance for a very sore shoulder the next day. 270 is worse. Neither one is suitable for long practice sessions, then --- if you want to shoot a lot, keep him on 243. 308 and 243 may be able to share some of the reloading dies, not 100% sure. 243 is based off 308 case I think. That rifle looks like a good one. I thought it came in more calibers than that???

Sorry, but NO. There should be NO requirement at all, but if there must be one, it should be minimal. On top of that, IQ tests are notoriously biased --- take me, for example, I am not all that bright but I have above average test taking skills (budget time per problem, work the solution from the multiple choice answers rather than figure it out, those sorts of things). If the tests were a real indication of anything, I would be a lot less of a slacker and would have amounted to something :) And if we cannot expect people to be literate to vote, I sure as hell won't require it to fire a gun. Which one takes understanding and the ability to comprehend the internet and world around you ... a) pointing a gun at the guy beating your head in or b) following the debates and news and whanots of national politics over the 2 year campaign season to make an informed choice between 2 losers? The answer is B, though only barely. I mean, what are you going to read about your gun carrying, the owners manual? Nope, the only thing in there worth anythign is the disassembly pictures. The laws? Even biden can't be bothered just blast em thru the door with a 12 ga slug, don't need to understand anything....

IMHO not as many will vote for her for being a woman. Its not a first, there have been a dozen women to run, been going on for decades now. The first would be if she won, but that is not a given either ---- she has a LOT of baggage. She is not attractive, looks like she has not slept since her husband was in office -- so the men won't go for her (sounds shallow, but attractive people do get more votes, historically). Hard to say how many. She *already* has all the feminazis in her camp, the only way she could get any more of THOSE would be to come out as gay. She already has all the demorats etc, so what you really are asking is "how many republican or fence sitting women would vote for her based off her gender alone" which IMHO is "few". I think most people who would have voted against her had she been a man would countinue to do so. A second question is can she bring the voter turnout? I suspect barry pulled out the black vote like flies to a poop. I doubt that hillary has the same draw, that is I doubt women who normally would not vote to rally behind her and get up out from in front of the TV to go vote? Not going to happen, again, she isn't special enough.

judge is wrong. I think extreme names should be changed, sure --- when a parent names their kid adolph hitler jones or whatever, the kid is going to be subjected to an extra dose of abuse between the time they are born and the time they are old enough to change it. Let a jury of 13, majority vote decide if the name is acceptable in court. Or, give a child a way to protest and get it changed after the age of 6, legally and completely. Jesus is not extreme, it is exceptionally common and unremarkable among many cultures (as is mary for the girls). I respect the right of parents to name the kid up to a point, but with any power comes responsibility.

I would say a sig 938 as well. Its metal framed if you consider alum metal? Its 1911ish in a 9mm pocket gun, seems like exactly what that collection needs. if used, older guns interest you A makarov also would be in order if you don't mind the oddball caliber. All metal, thin and small (big for a pocket, but I carried one in a pocket for over a decade). One of the best designs of all time, accurate, reliable, durable, easy to work on. A baby browning 25 is the king of 25s, again good metal construction, browning quality, SAO in a mousegun. A little pricy for LNIB but you can find a oft-carried but seldom shot one for not too much, with some wear on the finish etc. I would also say a ruger mark pistol to have a target gun, which your collection seems to lack, might be something to do.

Colorado apartment complex bans guns
Jonnin replied to c.a.willard's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
IMHO this is breach of contract for existing customers, and the complex should be forced to deal with the same penalty that residents face for breaking the lease. This varies, but for example I would say the complex should be unable to collect any more rent from the customers and the customers should have 90 days to move out. I think 90 days rent free is sufficient to cover the cost of moving and any pre-paid services (cable, for example?) that may be paid for past the broken contract date. -
the EAA witness series is as good as a CZ IMHO. Very well put together with a tight fit and excellent accuracy and reliability. The witness series has an inexpensive entry model or 2 that are better deals than most of the CZ models (again, they are close enough that one is not better than the other in any significant way) so you can save $100 or so if you just want a basic pistol. The fancy CZ models and fancy EAA models begin to drift apart in terms of what you might like, so for those, you just need to pick the one you like better (look or features), and for those, the price varies too much to compare. Clearly the expensive $1500 or whatever it is now EAA target pistol is an improvement over the stock CZ75 for its intended purpose, so again, once you get away from the basic models, yes some of the "clones" are better. And at some point, its not even really a clone anymore.

AR rolls counter clock-wise when I press trigger...
Jonnin replied to Peace's topic in Training Discussions
does the gun have a heavy trigger? That can cause the shooter to put force on the grip enough to shift. Normally this is a pistol problem but with a pistol grip, an AR with a heavy trigger could see it. If you have very strong hands it could be easy to apply more force than necessary, which is really the same issue. The weight of the rifle should be carried by the forward arm and your shoulder. the trigger hand should do nothing except pull the trigger. Try your stance without the trigger hand at all, just holding the rifle steady with foregrip and shoulder. Then bring your hand to it and focus on a straight pull back without any force on the grip at all. *** *** I am assuming here you are going for precise shooting, not combat shooting. For active shooting, your trigger hand probably WILL hold some of the rifle's weight, its just not easy to be mobile and active without gripping. -
McCain backs Obama's call for 'stand your ground' review
Jonnin replied to greenego's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Mccain has, in the last couple of years, proven to be just as bad as obama. Which means he is worse, because if he had won, people would be blaming the conservatives for the mess made by a democrat who ran as a conservative. At least with obama, the blame falls where it belongs. I think mccain agrees with obama about 85% of the time. -
while not that specific one, I have had no trouble out of 4 or 5 taurus that I have owned. I would rather have the ruger, though.

Jonnin replied to martinjd's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I carry a sig 938. It is a great choice, low capacity being the weak link. Still, it holds more than a revolver in less space and reloads easier and faster. The trigger is easy unlike most of the alternatives -- the biggest selling point for me was the nice action. 9mm even in a short barrel should be sufficient. I carry mine in my pocket and its invisible. Not easy to draw that way sitting down though, it comes out clean standing up. It took a while to break in enough to use weak practice ammo in it. Mine *wanted* +p defense ammo for a long time. -
we have had massive power outages before and survived. Sandy comes to mind, as well as the rolling blackouts and brownouts a few years ago, and other such. People manage ok without power for couple of weeks at the least. Of all that could happen, mass power outages would be nothing like an actual food shortage or disease or nuke or something drastic.

I went to a private school, and while there are times when I wonder if it was worth the money, one thing stands out in my mind. We did not have a D grade. We had A, B, C, F. A >= 90. B was >= 80, C was >= 70. If you were below 70% you failed. Fail too much and they would try to help you --- you had to come in on weekends to work with the teachers & they would go out of the way to figure out what the problem was, even give you extra chances to up your grade by doing extra work or taking an extra test etc if you were trying. The actual material learned was more or less (Not counting AP classes) the same as anywhere else. The above was what made the difference really. And that is how it SHOULD be everywhere -- if you can't get 3/4 of the material, you do not deserve credit for knowing that material.
