  1. ^This. What if there are two are more BGs?  What happens while you are talking to the first guy?  The second guy stays in the shadows and shoots you. Maybe? Maybe not? I'm not taking that risk for my family. Once I'm down, my wife will not be able to defend herself. That's why I'm there... that, and to kill spiders. :pleased:   Oh, let me add that it would vary depending on circumstances. I live in the country behind a locked gate 100 yards from the highway and we lock our doors at night. No one is going to try to prank me. I'm not a 20-something kid.  My close friends know that I keep a loaded gun handy at all times.   And one more thing. I'm not answering the door after dark. No one should be knocking at my door. I'll call 911 and let the cops talk to them.
  2. ^This.   It doesn't even take a gallon. The fumes will work their way down and kill everything. Just put a rock or brick over the hole afterwards and push it down with your shoe so they can't work around the edges.
  3. After several days of rain in 45 or so states, it was raining in all 50 states again today. Minnesota only had one tiny spot, but that counts.
  4. Two more days of rain in all 50 states. Granted, it was only a few drops in some states, but it there yesterday and again this morning (Aug 14). I wonder if anyone tracks this? It has to be approaching some sort of record.
  5. You need to think how you will use this light.  Will you be using it to look around and then turning it off? If so, a bright light will destroy your night vision indoors.  Will you be using it to look around your house? If so, you will be pointing a loaded weapon at whatever is there... the wife, a kid, the dog. Do you want to be doing that when you're half asleep? I don't.   I live in the country, so there is a chance I might go outside to see what made a sound. I don't want to be pointing a loaded weapon around at every bump in the night, especially after being awakened in the middle of the night. There's too much risk of an AD, if you're suddenly startled by something.  (Yeah, I know everyone else here is so well trained that would never happen... )   Instead of a weapons mount, I use the Harries Technique with a pressure switch that allows me to turn the light on briefly in my left hand while supporting the weapon in my right hand. I keep this light set in the fast strobe mode. I've had my wife flash it at me outside from 20 feet and it is extremely distracting.   In a true tactical situation... clearing a building... I'd want a mounted light. I can't convince myself that it's a good idea for my situation. I also keep about 5 LED lights at bedside for various uses.   Anyway, do what works for you. I just wanted to give you some things to think about.
  6. No, I just go on Intellicast and click on the radar, current loops, United States. That will show an animated radar picture of the entire US over the past two hours.   If it's not moving after a few seconds to load, click on Play Animation.  As I type this, there is only one speck of green for rain in ND and IO, but that counts. So, once again, it's raining in all 50 states.   Yeah, I realize that it doesn't show Alaska and Hawaii, but it always rains there somewhere.   EDITED:  Yep, I just checked HI and Alaska. It's raining there as well, but they are so big, it's usually raining somewhere at any given time.
  7. I've watched one episode. They camped by a stream and never caught a single fish. The guy was whining about being cold and he was sitting with his feet in the stream!
  8. Sunday and today (Monday), we've had rain in all 50 states again.  That's four days I've counted in the past week. It could be more... I didn't check every day.
  9. Here's something to consider. Our house is built on the east side of a hill. It's two story and most of the ground floor is underground. The rooms in the back of the house on the first floor have windows high on the walls that are at ground level outside. At the front of the house, the first floor is ground level.   Anyway, this keeps the first floor comfortably cool in the summer without air conditioning.  Trees on the hill behind the house give shade over the roof from about 3PM on in afternoon.
  10. I'm confused by the long gun laws. It's okay to buy a long gun out of state from a FFL dealer. I get that.   What about a long gun from a private party? I was under the impression that it could not be done.
  11. 2009 Kawasaki Versys. Bike in the background is a 1999 BMW F650. RV is for sale. 40' Alfa Toyhouse.
  12. I have a couple pair of 511 tactical pants. The label says 100% nylon. The are NOT cool. They are definitely hotter than cotton khaki pants I usually wear. I don't wear jeans so I can't compare them to jeans. I wear the 511s a lot in winter because they are much warmer. They are wind resistant and block the cold air better than other pants. They are also stain resistant and the pockets are deep enough to carry in front or rear pocket.
  13. If I wanted a better trigger, this is the route I would use.  I don't know what the 25 cents glock trigger job is, but I'd guess it would be polishing the moving parts where they touch. You might be surprised to look at some gun parts under a magnifying glass to see how rough they are.   In fact, if you buy a Kel Tec, it's the first step recommended before firing it even once, according to the Kel Tec users' forum (theKTOG.com).   I won't be doing this on my Glock, because I'm frankly don't like a light, short trigger on a gun without a manual safety.
  14. Yesterday and today, we've had rain in all 50 states at the same time. I don't remember seeing this very often.   It's fine by me. I'd rather have rain and 78 degrees where I live than sun and 100 degrees.
  15. What I said above isn't quite right, but it applies to ammo resales. If someone repeatedly buys goods with the intent of reselling those goods for a profit, then he/she must have a business license, collect sales tax, AND report the profits made on Schedule C of their Federal Tax Return.   If someone sells a one-time item for a profit, it should be reported a capital gain and taxes paid depending on whether it is a long-term or short-term (less than one year) holding period.
  16. I just do not understand paying $200 or more for a flashlight.   Ten years ago, it cost north of $150 to get a good light, but with today's LED technology, the price is coming down.   I have an UltraFire HD 2011 that I paid $17 for and a pressure switch that cost about $4, as I recall. I use it in the Harries Technique (handheld and not mounted on a firearm), but it probably could withstand the impact forces of being mounted on a weapon. If I mounted it, I'd test it for impact reliability before using it, but for $21 out the door (or out of China, actually), it's worth checking out.   I think I bought the light and pressure switch from www.FastTech.com. You can find the HD 2011 on eBay, but I don't know if they are real or fake. Budget Light Forum (BLF) has a forum on weapon lights. You should visit there and you'll probably learn a lot.   EDITED: There a lots of other inexpensive LED lights out there, but you really don't need to pay more than $30-$90 to get one. EDITED YET AGAIN!:  Fenix is a good brand name, so is NiteCore. There are several... I just tend to stick with the even cheaper lights in the under $30 price range.   EDITED AGAIN: Forget the lumens. Companies don't measure the same way, they exaggerate, and the light might only deliver full lumens for the first 2 minutes of battery use before it starts dropping off. Instead, go to BLF and look for nighttime beamshots, so you can get a feel for how one light compares to another.
  17. Not true. If you buy something with the sole intent of reselling it, you must have a business license and collect sales tax. These guys are breaking the law.
  18. Did you hear about all the gaffes Obama made on the Jay Leno show?  I don't stay up that late, but I never heard about it until NewsBusters did an article on them.   1. He said Charleston, SC, Savanna, GA, and Jacksonville, FL were in the Gulf of Mexico.   2. He said Russia would be hosting track, swimming and balance beam events in the Olympics... the 2014 Olympics in Russia are the WINTER games.  No track, no swimming, no gymnastics.   3. He said that Putin was former head of the KGB. Putin rose only to Lt Colonel in the KGB.   This is the same guy who said he had visited 57 states and only had one more to go.  How does this guy get a free pass on his mistakes?  He can't talk without a teleprompter telling him what to say.
  19. The press always touts the most liberal Republican candidate. Romney got a free ride from the press during the primaries (although other Republican candidates attacked him). Then, once he got the nomination, Romney became the anti-Christ as far as the press was concerned.   Forget Christie. The media wants Republicans to pick another loser in the 2016 primaries. They will viciously attack anyone who has a real chance of rousing the masses.... look at the attacks on Sarah Palin and Herman Cain.
  20. French toast made with three eggs covered in peanut butter, blackberry jelly, real maple syrup. Ethiopian dark roast coffee made from beans I roasted and ground myself. Sometimes, instead, I make a three egg omelet with bell pepper, tomato, and lots of cheddar cheese.
  21. Hmm... my summer carry is Kel Tec P3-AT (90%) and Kahr PM9 (10%) in front pocket.  In winter, my single stack is a Taurus 709 Slim.
  22. I wear 5.11 Tactical pants in winter because they are so warm, don't show dirt, and repel rain. I really don't think the average person notices.  They're just another cargo pant to most people.   Those who do notice probably think "off duty LEO" and I'm okay with that.   The only other gear I have is an NRA cap that I almost never wear.  No stickers on my car. No cammies. No gun gear shirts.
  23. I'd agree with the bidding for the 4 star near Opryland to get the Opryland Hotel. It's a real resort with indoor gardens, waterfalls, etc. It's worth seeing, especially at night, even if you don't stay there. In fact, it's the only thing in Nashville really worth seeing, unless you're into the music/bar scene. I guess a lot of people disagree, seeing how Nashville is a major destination city.   One problem with the Opryland Hotel is that if you want to do the tourist bar-hopping thing, it's a long way to downtown... several miles.   No matter where you end up staying, you will have to ride to get anywhere.   Oh, yeah, I forgot... the Parthenon in Centennial Park is worth seeing.   I checked on Hotwire, but the prices are still high in the downtown hotels. I guess it's still peak season that weekend.
  24. Now that you have a Kel Tec, check out www.TheKTOG.org   It's a forum for Kel Tec owners with a sub-forum for the PMR-30... optics, holsters, mods, etc.
  25. That is a great idea!  I have a station wagon. It would be nice to use the full size spare compartment as a hidden location for gear.
