Anyone know about this brand?

I just ordered the pieces for one of Hero Gear's Hero 15. I went with the 6.8spc and now am looking for ammo and realized I haven't heard of a few brands. Are there any that I should stay away from besides the obvious Wolf? Remington sells the 6.8 for $21 a box when you can find it, but this is the only brand I've found in bulk: Cabela's -- Sellier & Bellot Bulk 6.8 Remington SPC Ammo Anyone know about it? I'd like a few hundred cheaps to get the feel for my firearm to be and then a box or two of quality for when I want to use it.

I've shot the S&B in my 12gauge, my .45, my 9mm, and my .380 and have been satisfied with them for target practice. I think you would be fine.

The steel cases are hard on extractors.

And it's full of gum!

I'm not using a gas piston.

Thanks for the responses. I'm hoping to order a case or two of the Remington if it becomes available. If not, I'll get the S&B.

S&B is reloadable brass. I have reloaded it in both .45 auto and .38 special.

I think it is good as any other ammo.

Why is a steel casing unbearably rough on an AR style rifle but works great in eastern bloc rifles?

ARs run hotter than AKs because of all the hot gases going directly into the chamber/bolt area. AKs use a gas piston/operating rod system.

Wolf puts a lacquer coating on their steel cases and the extra heat in an AR softens the lacquer and gums them up. Or so I've been told. I'm a gas piston guy so it's not an issue for me. :tough:

Wolf doesn't make 6.8 so problem solved. Go to Silver State Armory and buy it all there..... when it's available. They are THE 6.8 ammo people. Remington's stuff is expensive and not the best. S&B is similar to Remington.

The only poeple making 6.8 are:

Silver State Armory (SSA)

Barret

Hornady

Remington

S&B

I looked at SSA, but all of their $20 a box ammo says Military/LE only. Not really sure why.

The only thing LE/Military restricted is their armor piercing stuff. Everything else is GTG.

I just looked around more and noticed that they are coming out with a "plinking" 6.8 in late summer. That's gonna be a pretty big plink! Anyways, another question. What is the deal with this Silver State Armory specializes in 6.8 SPC Ammunition and custom brass cases - 6.8 Ammunition, 6.8 SPC Ammunition, SSarmory.com, SilverStateArmory.com it says that I should make sure my rifle can handle the pressure. 3030 fps with a 16" barrel is crazy isn't it? Mine is going to be a 20", too.

Also, could someone explain to me what "OTM" and "TSX" mean? I read that it said "OTM was open tip match" and "TSX was triple shock extreme"...but that doesn't help me any. They are listed here: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp;jsessionid=EXKVX1ZNIWBKBLAQBBKSCOVMCAEFAIWE?id=0069163217143a&navCount=3&podId=0069163&parentId=cat20839&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20712-cat20839&catalogCode=2UG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20839&hasJS=true&_requestid=137021 . Cabela's apparently retails SSA pretty cheap.

I might add that, other than the AP, the other ones that say LE/Military is not referring to a restriction but that they are "combat" loads. Combat loads are hotter than "standard" loads and aren't safe in some of the older/ faster twist barrels ie 1/9.5 and SAAMI & SPC I chambers.

refer to the post I made while you were posting this. It's not the length of barrel but the twist rate and more importantly the chamber. The 6.8 was designed to work in very short barrels and not a whole lot is gained in longer barrels as velocity is achieved rather quickly. It is a twist rate issue and mainly chamber issue. If you have a SAAMI or SPC I chamber you will have pressure issues. SPCII or the new DMR are good to go with any load. If you have an older chamber there is a guy on the 6.8 forums that will send you a SPCII reamer and you can ream your chamber to the proper dimensions.

I'm having a "DMR" built. All Hero 15 receivers, not sure about internals. I am getting a Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56 though! =DD

I asked Mr.Hero Gear himself about it. I'm too damn excited and acting like I'm waiting on a Christmas present. It's my first, I can't wait to play with her for the first time, I know Joe will build me the best thing he can with what options I gave him.

...still trying to think of a good name for her.

I'm no expert, but I think the OTM round is a gun nut/military moniker for a match grade boat tailed hollow point bullet from sierra. And I think the TSX bullet is a barnes solid copper bullet, designed for big game. I could be wrong. Its getting tough to wade through the BS.

Links:

http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/rifle/tsx-bullet/

http://www.sierrabullets.com/index.cfm?section=bullets&page=rifle&brandID=1

Given the bullet choices on that web page, the best bet for deer hunting around here or self defense is the 110gr sierra pro hunter loading, imo:

http://www.ssarmory.com/6.8_spc_ammo-2-1-1-1-1.aspx is the link, if you can bring it up.

And I'd be more inclined to stick with a known brand like remington, until I had tested this off brand stuff. Just because somebody said its great on a web page...I'd actually be more inclined to discount its performance in the real world. YMMV. I don't own a 6.8.
