Question on mixing ammo

I was out at my redneck shooting range this afternoon as stated in another post. I was shooting both my xd9 and xd40 and a question came up in my mind. What would happen if I accidently mixed ammo? I know what some will say, tell me to try it and post the results, but I have not intentions on ever finding out. I did found out that the 9mm won't fit in the 40 magazine, it pops back out, BUT the 40 will feed into the 9 mag, which in my thinking, firing a 40 out of a 9 would be worse than firing a 9 out of a 40. Anyone know what would happen? Thanks

I'm not sure you can mix 9mm and .40 but ya can darn sure pop a .40 into a .45. results aren't too pleasant but umm.. accidents happen.. lol

I didn't try putting a 40 into the 9 chamber, only in the magazine, I'm guessing the 40 won't fit? Would anything happen if the 40 came up thru the magazine other than Failing to feed?

BTW, does FTF mean fail to fire or fail to feed?

The .40SW wont fit into a 9mm chamber. If you accidentally put a 9mm into a .40SW chamber and it actually fires, I doubt anything disastrous would happen since 9mm operates at a considerably lower pressure than .40SW. I've accidentally fired a .40SW in a 1911 before. It fired and the shell expanded to fill the chamber and had to be removed with pliers. Other than that, no ill effects.

I mixed boxes and put 9mm in a .40 (G27). It fired, but an FTE. Jammed it. No real harm.

When I had my Kimber, A buddy and I were shooting in the same stall, some how I loaded one of his .40's in the Kimber. Same thing as bkelm18 said except we had to ask CCA for a shell extracter...

I've always wondered what a 357sig would look like if it was popped in a .40 chamber. I have both barrels for my gun and thought about the off chance that getting mixed up could happen. 40 fails to lock the slide in the 357 sig, so i'm not too worried about it going that way. but the other way is gonna push a 9mm bullet out a 40 barrel.

I have been shooting .40 exclusively for now so it's not really an issue and I always check, but i'm just curious.

I have shot 22lr in a 22 mag chamber. The cases swell and about half of them cracked (Ruger single six).

I mixed a 9mm in with some 40's somehow and shot a rd in my xd. It didn't cause any damage but it caused a FTE. No harm but I wouldn't want to do it regularly. I only shoot 40's for now so I don't have that problem anymore.

No because the shot felt different and sounded different. I switched my focus from the target to the gun and don't have a clue to how accurate the shot was. I was more concerned if I had damaged the gun. Fortunately everything was OK.

I mixed some 9s in with some 40s once. Fired fine but as stated earlier had a failure to feed afterwards. Nothing dramatic. Glad it wasn't the other way around though.
