I thought I was ready...

Recommended Posts

... sadly, I was not. I thought my Golden Retreiver had prepared me for a dog that sheds heavily. I was so wrong. I got a German Shepherd pup when my wife issued the puppy or baby utlimatum. This dog is just now 5 months old and sheds a sweater every 3 days. The fence account is gaining attention over the new gun account by the day.

You need to add a "Furminator" to your readiness plan if you don't already have one. It is by far *the* best brush for eliminating excess fur on our four-legged friends. Furminator + quality food makes a huge difference. The amount of hair that comes off in one session of brushing with the Furminator is almost scary.

I used to have a husky/malamute mix. He only shed once a year, but in that month he was losing fur, you could fill a king-sized mattress with what he lost.

Oh, and even if you throw the dog outside, you'll still need to brush him to help get the loose fur off and not have it mat up and cause problems.

Not a chance. I love this little dog. She has been the easiest dog I have ever trained. She will do anything for a treat and picks up on what you want in just a few tries. She is very smart and extremely alert. I can tell she is gonna be a fantastic dog for years to come.

Also I basically have what would have been a really nice 1911 invested in this dog by now. I also shudder to think what would happen to me if my wife got home from work and this dog wasn't greeting her at the door.

You need a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner as well. After going through three other vacuums in a year with our black lab, the Dyson is amazing. Since the container on the vacuum is clear, it looks like you've sucked up a whole dog every time you vacuum - which is multiple times a week in our case.

I'd be glad to have a Shepard that sheds. Right now we have a Maine Coon that's starting to shed. Love him anyway. When the time is right, I'll have one. Maybe yours will do this:

A man walks into a bar with a small dog under his arm and sits down at the counter, placing the dog on the stool next to him. The bartender says, "Sorry, pal. No dogs allowed."

The man says, "But this is a special dog -- he talks!"

"Yeah, right," says the bartender. "Now get out of here before I throw you out."

"No, wait," says the man. "I'll prove it." He turns to the dog and asks, "What do you normally find on top of a house?"

"Roof!" says the dog, wagging his tail.

"Listen, pal..." says the bartender.

"Wait," says the man, "I'll ask another question." He turns to the dog again and asks, "What's the opposite of soft?"

"Ruff!" exclaims the dog.

"Quit wasting my time and get out of here," says the bartender.

"One more chance," pleads the man. Turning to the dog again, he asks, "Who was the greatest baseball player that ever lived?"

"Ruth!" barked the dog.

"Okay, that's it!" says the bartender, and physically throws both man and dog out the door and onto the street.

Turning to the man, the dogs shrugs and says, "Maybe I should have said Joe Dimaggio?"

Sounds like I need to look into a furminator and a Dyson. My wife will be ecstatic, she has wanted a Dyson for awhile and I wouldn't cave. We have some kind of a brush for fur that she got from somewhere, it may be a furminator I don't know. When we use it on the Golden it works great. The GSD won't be still long enough to be brushed. Thanks for the tips guys.

I'm waiting for the time I'll have time to properly own/take care of a dog. Had one - crappy story and always think of the day I'll be able to get another. I commend you on sticking with it and loving your best friend.

Well after checking with my wife when she got home it turns out we do have a furminator. We just don't find the time to use it. Now off to find a good deal on that Dyson vac.

A vac. recommendation...ORECK XL with hypoalergenic(sp) bag...works like a charm
