Boxer and 3 day old baby.

Recommended Posts

My boxer, Lucky, is the same way with my daughter when we first brought her home. I have a picture of him staring in and standing guard over her crib. She is almost 5 now (in February) and he is almost 8 (in March) and they have been inseparable the entire duration of her life. The mushy sweet talk that comes out of her mouth when talking about, or to, him is so sugary it'll give you a toothache.

Sounds like my Pit and daughter. When the wife was pregnant, Roxy would lay her head on her stomach all the time. When the baby arrived, any little whimper and Roxy was right there. She is very protective of our daughter (now 1) and will jump in between her and anyone she does not know well. She even knocked my brother down one time because he jumped off the couch and quickly sat down on the floor to play with the baby.

Roxy has a big cage in our living room and daughter will climb in there all the time and play with dog toys or lean back and fall asleep on the dog. And she shares every bit of food she gets with Roxy - drops on the floor or walks over to her cage and gives her a bite.

Several family members where concerned at first, a 70# Pit was not a good family dog with a new baby in their mind. But they have all came around and realize those two love each other and that dog is not going to hurt her.

Pits get a bad rep when its not deserved. They make great family dogs and I've seen Rotts be the same way. Collies are awesome dogs for kids, too and there just about ain't nothin' friendlier than a Boxer. I've heard of more bad deals happen with Shepards than any of the other.

Gotta love how protective and nurturing dogs can be.

My 105# American Bulldog, Lucy, used to sleep with my daughter and protect her. My wife peeked in on her one night when we were going to bed. Lucy only saw the silhouette in the door and the growl was ferocious. It actually scared my wife pretty bad. As soon as she spoke and the dog knew who she was, she was back to tail wagging and friendly.
