I hate shipping based on price, not weight or size.

Considering a knife for my father-in-law.  Actually I was considering several from http://www.smkw.com.

However what I am looking at is in the 130 range, so 1 of these would be at the 3rd tier and a second one would take it to the highest tier of pricing.

I know that makes it easy on the web guys to setup static pricing, but just doesn't feel a bit right.

Shipping and Handling Charges Merchandise Total Standard UPS Ground UPS 2nd Day Next Day $0.01 - $50.00 $7.99 $12.99 $17.99 $29.99 $50.01 - $100.00 $10.99 $15.99 $20.99 $34.99 $100.01 - $200.00 $13.99 $19.99 $24.99 $39.99 $200.01 + $17.99 $23.99 $28.99 $42.99

I personally would think the more you spend the cheaper the shipping especially for a small item like a knife. Oh well.

Well in this case it cost them.  I shopped around a bit more and found the same knife 10 dollars cheaper with free shipping on Ebay.  (new in box).

There is a point when labor & overhead become the major part of the cost of shipping, and that figures into your minimum shipping charge.  And then, if you can ship something that weighs 10 lb for $5 postage, it doesn't follow that you can ship something that weighs 1 lb for 50 cents.

You can't base shipping costs on weight for many reasons, not the least of which are that the Post Office and UPS charge based partially on weight and partially on package size.

A shipping cost schedule, when done honestly, represent a coarse filtering of all possible shipping costs into several categories.  The shipper makes money on some shipments, loses on others, and hopes he comes out even in the long run.

I really like spending my money locally, but I also have a limit to my budget, I can't write bad checks like the gubermint. I always shop around a bit and most times I end up saving money. I understand a business needs to make a profit to stay in business, but they don't need to get rich off of me.
