What licence do I need?

This year looks to be my first year to hunt and fish in TN. I am not going to go back home to MI this year to hunt. My kids are finally interested in fishing. I have put off fishing because of my kids, I would rather spend time with my kids than fish by myself. I was looking at the website and was confused by the terminology of small game, does that include deer.

No, you will need a hunt/fish and a big game gun, that is if you plan on hunting with a rifle and not archery or muzzle loader. If you plan on taking does or hunting on public land you will most likely need a type 94 as well.

Thanks, the first price list I saw did not have the deer licence as an add on and I thought $34 to hunt and fish was awful cheap. I am used to paying a lot more to hunt. $68 is cheap, I might have to stay in state more often.

What he said. Welcome to the joys of TN hunting/fishing licenses. The easiest (and most expensive) solution is to get the Sportsmans license. But if you don't want to spend that much, the small game / fishing combo is the best route for now.

From there you can add the big game gun, muzzleloader, archery, water fowl, trout, WMA, ....

Having hunted and fished in several states, including Meechigan, license fees are all over the place.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason.  Tennessee experienced a 22% increase this year.  Here is an article that came out about the time the increase if you want to know the details.  They even compare Tennessee fees to Michigan's.

I have been paying around $200 a year for a non resident hunter in MI. I think when I lived there I think I paid around $50, but that was 8 years ago. I have been going up mainly to hunt with family and up there I am basically guaranteed at least 1 a year. I also have hunted that land my whole life and to me that was all worth the $200. It is going to be totally different here.

You need the Type 001 for $34 which is the combo fishing and small game hunting. That's for squirrels and such.

 

For deer and turkey you then need to add on the supplemental licenses 009 (Big Game Gun), 010 (Big Game Archery), and/or 011 (Big Game Muzzleloader) for $34 each. You'll need one for each of your hunting tools of choice, but you only have to get the ones you're using.

 

If you'll be on WMA land for deer you need a 094 permit for $25

If you'll be on WMA land for small game you need a 091 permit for $25 or a single-day 092 for $12.50

 

For migratory birds, you'll need more permits/licenses and pay more fees.

 

 

Once you hit 65, you can get the Annual Sr. Citizen Hunt/Trap/Fish for $5 and can take deer with that but you can't hunt on WMA without the 094, 091, or 092 or for $50 you can make that a lifetime Hunt/Trap/Fish license.

Or you can get the Annual Sr. Citizen Sportsman for $50 and don't have to pay for the WMA permits, or make that a Lifetime Sportsman license for $329

 

Additional rules may apply for migratory birds.

If your kids are young enough and plan to hunt regularly when they get older, it may well be worth it to get them the lifetime licenses. If they are just going to fish there's no point.

I will be getting them all lifetime licences. Even if I take them hunting once it would almost pay for it. I have 3 that are under 3. The other 2 have already shown interest in hunting and fishing so I will have to get them a lifetime as well.

I just recently picked up the 2 lifetimes for the under 3's. The third under 3 will be born in June and I will be getting his then. I will wait on the older 2 until they show more interest because they have a few years until the lifetime price changes.

Looks like you found plenty information. I don't know a lot about hunting or license requirements. I was researching use of TWRA areas (mostly for MC Riding) and found these web sites. Maybe some help to some folks. I do have Lifetime (Senior) Hunt and Fish and just bought the 093 Small Game for WMA Areas which allows me to ride MC off the main roads in  Catoosa area (that I use for ride thru). So, guess if I want to hunt small game in TWRA can do.
