  1. Now that Remington has just about ruined the Marlin name I have noticed the demand for the older Marlins has increased quite a bit. IMO nice early model Marlins are a good investment.
  2. What Dolomite said. You wont be able to buy the paint for what they will charge to do the whole job. If your prep work is good it will come out fine. If your prep work isn't right it doesn't matter who paints it, it wont be right.
  3. Wonder how long it will take before your creation shows up on a Mosin forum. It seems to be a game of one upmanship for the purists to find a gun like yours and then for the rest of the Mosin eliteist  to pile on how you have ruined a classic.
  4. Unless the market is once again flooded with cheap parts kits I would not expect the price of even the cheap AK's to be under $700. Yes, panic buying has driven up the AK prices some but that has seemed to pass. IMO it has more to do with the lack of parts kits being imported and the barrel ban. In todays worldwide political climate don't expect the importers to go out on a limb and make the necessary investments to once again flood the market with cheap parts kits when the fear is always present that they could banned with the next mass shooting and they get left holding the bag with unsellable product.
  5. I had an 88 Chevy pickup years ago that I would wait until it started knocking, then pour 4 quarts in. I sold it with 200,000 miles on it and last I saw guy who bought it had put close to another 75,000 on it with no problems.
  6. Parts kits from overseas, which is what they all to start with, are few and far between. They used to be in the $100 range and come with a barrel, so add in the cost of a cheap receiver and labor to put one together and $300-400 is what you could get into one for. Now expect to pay $400 for a parts kit, if you can find one, and most likely it also will not include a barrel as they can no longer be imported. Add $100-150 for the barrel and another $100 for a receiver plus labor and it is not hard to see why $800 and up is the new norm.
  7. You truly got lucky, I cant say I have ever seen a Garand as nice as the one I got for less than I paid CMP. And the few I have seen cheaper were either shot out or junk.
  8. The ammo that I have plenty of "set back" was bought when it was plentiful and cheap. If anybody is buying it all up now when prices are high just to have it "set back" they are just compounding the problem and extending the shortage and high prices. My guess is if everybody would buy only what they need instead of stockpiling when prices are high the ammo shotage would be over in a week. If the OP  bought this ammo because he has a match to train for or it is his normal montly shooting supply then good for him. If it sits in his cabinet for the next year, he may not feel so lucky everytime he sees the price stickers on the boxes and realizes the same ammo is then for sale at a lower price when this madness has finally passed.
  9. I went this morning. In and out in 10 minutes. Save your $8. Open your own safe and storage cabinet at home and you will see a bigger and better gun show.
  10. IMO your use of the phrases "wiped them out" and the fact that you circumvented the 10 box limit by having your wife  go in and buy as well is what is rubbing a lot of us the wrong way. Congrats on your ammo score, but in times like these bragging about the fact that you left none for anybody else by abusing store policy is not going to make you a lot of friends.
  11. Remington has a decent 11-87 youth model with a synthetic stock and interchangeable chokes. We have 2 for our SCTP program and work great for the small kids as they have virtually no recoil. Should be in the $500-600 range.
  12. The CZ527 is the one to get. Even over on the Ruger forum the 77 does not high praise in the 22 Hornet unless it has had the K modification. I was torn betwwen the 77 and the 527 but after research soon found out that you are correct, the CZ527 is the "gold standard". The single set trigger alone is worth the price of admission. Only problem your going to have is locating one to buy.
  13. Everybody and their brother owns something in 223. There is just a coolness factor in owning an "oddball" caliber that does not show up at the range at every other bench.
  14. I love my CZ527 in 22 Hornet.
  15. I mig weld mine in. Just plug weld them. Weld, then as fast as you can, or even have someone else help, take an air nozzle from a compressor and blow cool air on the weld to cool it. You can actually watch the high spot from your weld shrink right back into place. Grind your welds smooth and then just a little body filler over the pits and grind marks. Of course I am a body man by trade so it comes easy to me. Also a mig does a nice job with the plug welds. I think flux core wire doesnt quite make as nice of welds. Also make sure you get plenty of penetration into the rails. Can be kind of tricky through small plug weld. Get you some sheet metal scraps and practice some and see if you can get it work.
  16. It could be worse, you could have just bought a new 22.
  17. Bought one used few years back and could not get it to cycle. Could never really figure out what was wrong with it. I like the 742's and would buy another if it was priced right but will make sure to fire it first. Traded an Norinco SKS for it and traded it off for an 870 so I am figuring it was about $275 gun two years ago.
  18. One of, if not the best when it comes to lever action guns.
  19. Dont think just a primer going off would be anywhere near enough to cycle the gun and bring up the next cartridge in a rapid fire situation. If he was slow firing and had a squib load, racked the slide and shot without checking for barrel obstruction that could happen.
  20. Unfortunately this is the only way that the ammo hoarding will stop. It takes this kind of shock to the system to get people to stop buying every bullet they can get their hands on.
  21. I knew I was saving them for a reason. Ive got an 8lb powder jug almost full. Actually, I think when it gets to this point I am gonna start doing a lot more fishing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0jxpLH8FtY&feature=player_detailpage
  22. I work for a Hot Rod Shop, unfortunately we have no mill or lathe. Have also looked at websites for TNTech and Pellisipsi. Dont find any mention of evening classes. perhaps I am not looking at right places on webisites. Guess I will have to call and ask.
  23. Are you trying to start a career or just learn some basic skills for personal use?
  24. Any place in or around Knoxville where a person could take some basic adult ed style machine shop classes. Would love to take a 6-8 week course on how lathes and mills work, basic set up etc. Have been looking online and cant seem to find anything. I kinda thought a lot of high schools offered adult night classes for a fee for such things but cant find anything on Knox County Schools website either.
