Conceal Carry vs Open Carry
MiddTennTaco replied to MiddTennTaco's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I would like to thank those who have devolved this thread with silly talk about glock vs.1911s. Also with regards to carry, nobody needs to be bashing one group or the other considering this was originally just a poll. Lets keep it civil. "Will Carry" - I completely agree. As former law enforcement, Ive had many hours of training on this alone. Weapons retention training is absolutely necessary and often overlooked. You learn about firearms safety before you get a gun, you learn weapons retention before you carry whether OPEN or CONCEALED. Carry responsibly, folks. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2 -

I do not comprehend -
I am at the Winchester Speedway right now and I got to wondering - how does everyone prefer to carry? Personally, I almost always open carry and no one has ever given me grief or ever appeared to be frightened. I have found that almost no one even notices. The ones that do notice received me extremely positively. About 10% of the time I conceal carry when I anticipate more people especially children present and/or around particularly sheepish crowds. Sometimes I conceal carry at first until Im more comfortable and discreetly switch. I take an OWB and IWB with me wherever I go in case I want switch.

Im in the market for a gun right now and i havent even thought about visiting then even to check on prices. Not out of spite, rather out of fear. Especially since i dont know the first thing about bolt actions. Maybe if enough people bitch at me about supporting local business I might make a visit. Sent from my HTC Inspire using Tapatalk 2

Don't You Just Love The TSA???
MiddTennTaco replied to E4 No More's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
"TSA Guy: You can't take those on the plane. Soldier: What? I've had them since we left country. TSA Guy: You're not suppose to have them. Soldier: Why? TSA Guy: They can be used as a weapon. Soldier: [touches butt stock of the rifle] But this actually is a weapon. And I'm allowed to take it on. TSA Guy: Yeah but you can't use it to take over the plane. You don't have bullets. Soldier: And I can take over the plane with nail clippers? TSA Guy: [awkward silence] Me: Dude, just give him your damn nail clippers so we can get the f--k out of here. I'll buy you a new set. Soldier: [hands nail clippers to TSA guy, makes it through security] This might be a good time to remind everyone that approximately 233 people re-boarded that plane with assault rifles, pistols, and machine guns -- but nothing that could have been used as a weapon. Trust me, I know all about buying local. That being said: Not out of spite but out of fear. That being said, why spend more? Sent from my HTC Inspire using Tapatalk 2

Thanks for the responses so far folks. This decision is getting harder and harder by the day. It is killing me. I'd really just like to pull the trigger on one already. Recently I've done a little bit of reading on the T/C Venture. It sounds interesting, I again just haven't heard much about it. It is a lot like the Ruger American in that way. What befuddles me is the price on the Remington 700 package at Walmart. I cannot find any Remington 700 for less than $500 let alone scoped for that price. Is it a crappy Walmart Model 700? lol Right now, in order it is down to: 1. Savage Model 110 FXP .270 scoped for $447 2. Ruger American Rifle .270 or .308 for $400 3. T/C Venture for $??? (I haven't seen one in person yet) 3. Remington 700 ?SPS? .270 scoped for $420 Being that all of these come scoped and not scoped I am starting to wonder. What I found was a Bushnell 6-18 x 50 scope for $135 (less than $150 is my price range). Is this a decent scope? I like the fact that it is more than the average 3-9 x 40. That being said, I am wondering if I should just buy THAT scope and throw it on my AR-15 and see if I like long distance shooting and THEN decide on a rifle. These two rifles I listed pre-scoped kind of leave a bad taste in my mouth. I'm sure they are of sickening quality. Opinions and advice appreciated! Thanks!

From my experience with photography, orange might not be a good idea. Think of colors at sunrise and sunset. This color is cast on everything, even a potential target. Florescent green seems like a great choice. If I ever have to shoot something that color.... Lol, well that will be interesting. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2

Nicely Done Survival Bracelet
MiddTennTaco replied to Defender's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
No reason for handcuff keys and no need for the bracelet in a BOB in my opinion. Id rather throw in an entire bundle of paracord. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2 -
I was wondering if anyone knew of any knife sharpening services located in Murfreesboro. I've got a buddy who wants to re-bevel a kabar and I don't have the patience to do it myself. Thanks

Wow I definitely wasn't expecting so many responses. Thank you all. Just to clarify on some things - Broylz, as much as I appreciated your dissertation - yes, I definitely DO want a sub $500 gun. The Colt 6940 was my first gun and I haven't wanted to get rid of it. I had a lot of money at the time and it was an approved weapon on the departments list. Now I'm just a poor college student, haha! I have looked at a lot of surplus rifles but I'd really like something that will happily take a scope. Right now I'm hoping to buy something locally. I am definitely leaning towards a Savage as everyone I've ever asked says it is a lot better for the money. That being said, it will help me afford better optics. I still need to head down to Walmart sometime and see what they have. I know I've seen either a Nikon or Burris scope or both at Walmart for something like $150. It can't be too bad. Today I DID go and see a Ruger American rifle and found it for $379. They had it in .270 and 30-06. To me it just doesn't seem like it has been proven yet and I haven't heard much about it. I've heard that it's "good" and that's about it. Come to think of it, I suppose I really should ask what caliber would be recommended. I don't plan on reloading but who knows, maybe I'll get brave sometime in the future. Walmart's always had a decent selection of ammo at the best prices. I'm thinking .308 is the best all around choice. I heard it is more accurate than 30-06 and it is a lot more common than .243, .270, .300, etc - at least from my understanding. Any thoughts on this? Right now it's down to: Remington 700 rifle w/ or w/o scope package that walmart carries Savage besides their bottom line AXIS series ( I think I may have to go look at Dicks) Ruger All-American

I'd love to hear what yall think as far as picking a bolt gun. Let me start off by saying I've never had one before. I already have a pistol and an assault rifle. My rifle is a Colt 6940 which I have zeroed for 100 yards with an Aimpoint. I've had no problem hitting (100% of the time) a head sized steel target at 200 yards from a bench before. I can't see what I'm hitting of course, but I love hearing the metal sing to me. I'm sure 200 yards is nothing though. More recently I've started to fancy after bolt action rifles. I really know nothing about any real long range shooting other than the fact that I would like to start learning. Fortunately, yall don't have to worry about that, I'm not asking to be taught (I'm not asking those questions yet, at least). I will do my own research and learn that way although I wouldn't mind any guidance if anybody so chooses to offer any. Usage: 95% chance it will only for target shooting at the Woodbury range (I believe it goes out to 400 yards or something?) 5% chance I might take up hunting some day Price range: $300-$500 (maybe a little more if I have to buy a separate scope - I know its important) Accuracy Expectations: You tell me Most importantly - as a STARTING rifle, what would give me the most bang for my buck? Remember... Accuracy. You might cringe when I say this but I did see a Rem 700 (not 770) at Walmart (M'boro) already scoped for I think about or less than $400. I don't recall what caliber, but I'm pretty sure it was .243 or .270. SPS or something? I would have to go back and see. On the other hand, I've been to Dicks before and I recall them having a lot of bolt actions for sale but I wasn't interested in them at the time. I would have to check up on them, too. I have heard that Savage offers some good rifles that are even better for the money than a Remington 700. I'm kind of wary of going too cheap though. Should I stay away from their AXIS series and look towards the Stevens models? And what's the deal with this "Accu-trigger" I keep reading about? Is it really any good? To me it sounds like an extremely light trigger that is so light that they put a Glock trigger safety on it, lol. Anyway, opinions will be greatly appreciated. Not really interested in looking at used bolt guns at this time but heck, give me reasons to think otherwise.

Going Camping in Kentucky
MiddTennTaco replied to MiddTennTaco's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Well I read all the content I could find on both links and I believe I found the answers to 1-4. I'm still unclear about #5. I still can't figure out whether or not I can carry. Here is another link. http://www.lbl.org/lei_orders/Order60-09-08.pdf -
Hey folks, this is going to be the first time I will be carrying out of state. I am planning on doing some camping on the Kentucky side of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. From what I understand, Kentucky has a reciprocity agreement with Tennessee which means - I believe - that I can carry a concealed handgun in that state. Is there anything I should know before I make this trip? Specifically.... 1. Does it have to remain concealed? 2. Does it have to be in a certain place in the car? 3. Am I required to inform a police officer that I am carrying? 4. Being that it is the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, is it considered a national park? a. If it is a national park, can I carry with my TN handgun carry permit (HCP)? b. Does it have to be concealed?

My CZ-75 D PCR definitely does not have it.

I've never had a gun with a magazine that did not drop free nor will I ever want one.

I am fortunate enough to conceal carry everyday as my employer allows it. I have a very heavy gun and the crossbreed carries it very well even on the hottest of days where I am dripping in sweat. I would only recommend treating the black leather side with mink oil every once in a while and the plain leather side with water repellent spray you can get at Walmart. It is an extremely comfortable holster and I've had mine for several months.

I've never felt that commentary hurt. One would think that people coming to a forum probably expect a forum. They don't expect having to learn how to use some new, strange system. With this new system, items are now listed for sale and then lost into the hundreds of pages of mixed sold and unsold merchandise amongst sellers who frequent the forums and those who throw up an ad and disappear for a month having sold their items long ago. I would think, if anything, that public conversation helped the benefactor community getthings sold. It kept the classifieds posts relevant, up to date, gauged interest, and showed potential buyers a progress of sale. I do have to give credit where credit is due when I say that the new classifieds system is definitely much more appealing and easier to navigate for a buyer. However, I don't believe it helps paid benefactors sell anything. In fact, I'm starting to feel that paid benefactor membership is losing its value with this new system. That's just my $0.02 and I understand that it's not going to change anytime soon. I'm just voicing my opinion on the matter. I want the old system back.
