  1. I renewed mine just a few months ago. It took four months for me to receive my new permit. The letter they send you is good only for three months, even though it doesn't say that anywhere on the letter, and they will not send you a second rewnewal letter, so if your renewal takes more than 3 months, you can't legally carry until the permit comes. I would suggest you go ahead and renew as soon as possible. They don't send a sticker. They send you a new permit using your on file picture.
  2. Agreed there, generally speaking, but trying pass a background check and being denied is not illegal (unless you are a prohibited person) and certainly, not illegal if the only problem is a glitch in the system. Knowing you can't pass one and having your cousin do the paperwork for you is illegal and carries pretty stiff penalties if you're caught doing it, for all three parties involved.
  3. When I was shooting regularly, I shot more than that. This past year with ammo prices going up and my change in work shedule, I shoot a couple of thousand rounds a month on average, but I don't get to shoot every week. I also haven't competed in but a few matches this year. Before this year, I shot a match of some kind at least twice a week in addition to practice time. back to the OP: My EDC is a Sig P229 in .40 (most of the time) or Sig P226 in 9mm. Right now, I'm shooting a few times a month, but not every week. My plans are, by the end of the year or the first of the new year, to be back actively shooting matches, but unfortunately, for the time being, I won't be able to make as many matches as I used to due to my work schedule.
  4. For the most part, I don't think brick and mortar stores will go way. To use the music store comparison, there is a music store local to me that has ridiculously high prices, sometimes as much as literally double or triple what you can get items for elsewhere, but they still have a huge volume of business. Internet sales may hurt or put out of business some stores, but in general, some people will still buy locally. While some people care only about lowest price, some people would rather support local business, and then there are some people that won't go to the trouble of shopping around and will just buy at whatever location is most convenient to them.
  5. From a standpoint of the dealer, if you have any reason to believe the person cannot legally buy the gun, and that whoever is buying the gun may be buying it for the other person, you're not supposed to complete the transaction.
  6. Or robbing the place where they currently work without wearing a disguise. LOVE that one. Darwin at his best right there. As to the OP: I wear gun-related shirts regularly. I go somewhere several nights a week right after work and I wear whatever I have on. Very rarely does anyone ever seem to notice. I also have had one gun related sticker (although not an NRA sticker, but there is a picture of a gun on it) on my car from some years now and it's never been a problem.
  7. I know a few people that have permits but don't own guns. This is the main reason I have heard, basically they may one day decide to get a gun so they went ahead and got the permit. The other reason I have heard a few times is that they have the permit so there won't be any trouble if they get pulled over while transporting guns (regarding people that own guns only for target shooting purposes). The main reason (that I have heard) for owning guns, having a permit, but never carrying I stated in a previous email: "I have a permit so I can carry a gun if I'm going somewhere I think I'll need it." Based on many conversations I have had when I was actively instructing, some people just don't ever go anywhere where they think they could ever encounter a problem. Clearly, crime only happens in certain neighborhoods.
  8. I suppose it depends on what we're referring to. A person who has a gun permit who never carries a gun...I don't see that as any different than not having a permit and never carrying a gun. Never having a gun is never having a gun, regardless of what piece of paper you have in your wallet. I know quite a few people that have permits but literally never carry, by their own admission, because they never go anywhere they think they will need it. I have had someone once say to me that they had a permit but it had been so long since they had even taken the gun out to clean it they weren't sure where the gun was. And yes, I understand there are people who can't or won't carry because of circumstances. In my opinion, the possibility of losing your livelihood or going to jail is a pretty decent reason for not carrying. Because it's too much trouble to carry except on a day where I think I'll need to stay alive...not so much, just my opinion, which is worth everything you paid for it.
  9. It's amazing, however, the number of sheeple that are convinced that this is completely wrong. One of the most common things I heard when I was actively instructing was something along the lines of: "Oh, but I live in (insert city here). We don't have crime there. But, I come to Memphis every now and then and I need a gun for that."
  10. I'm pretty sure a large majority of permit holders get a permit so they can carry a gun when they are going somewhere they think they need it and no other time. When I was an active instructor, I heard this literally hundreds and hundreds of times.
  11. I worked for Chrysler for 8 years. Man...I never got the pot smoking break memo.
  12. I use a concealement vest from Smith and Alexander. They are reasonably cheap, and made of light nylon or some other sort of fabric and are just a generic vest and are available in 2 or 3 different colors. They do not look like a tactical vest. If I recall correctly, if it's for IDPA, you get a 5% discount.
  13. I always liked the phrase "play stupid games, win stupid prizes."
  14. 5.7 seconds...big deal, I'll bet I can do it in 20. I'm going to try this this week and see what I can do. It looks like a pretty good drill.
  15. Some or maybe most of the reasons to get on the sex offenders list are in fact felonies, but some states, you can be put on the list for something like soliciting prostitution, which, I'm reasonably sure is not a felony.
  16. I'm reasonably sure the flying spaghetti monster is real. For proof, I submit the following: Yummy Link: Edible Flying Spaghetti Monster
  17. I thought that was beer. Beer AND Salma Hayek, now THAT'S proof.
  18. There's no rule (in IDPA) about how many stages can include one handed shots. There are rules that state the maximum allowed distance for 1 handed shots; 10 yards for strong hand, 7 yards for weak hand. Also, there are no rules against allowing one handed shots in scenario stages.
  19. Mine was a Lorcin .25 that someone gave to me when I was still an active shooting instructor. One night, I decided to shoot it. It took several minutes before I could get the first round to fire, due to various issues. The safety was very difficult to work and it would not chamber a round if you filled the magazine to capacity. After firing a few rounds at 7 yards, I brought the target in and couldn't find any holes. I brought the target in to about 3 yards. While firing at the center chest area of an IALEFI Q target at 2 yards, the bullets were impacting above the head circle a couple of inches.
  20. As already stated, you can use any handgun for the class or to qualify, however, the state syllabus specifically allows instructors to limit the caliber if they choose to. So, if you're going to take the class somewhere, you may want to ask. Most instructors don't, but I know several that do.
  21. Who owns Autozone park? Is it owned by a private coroporation or is it owned by the city? If it's owned by the city, I'd think it would fall under this: §39-17-1311 It is an offense for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, with the intent to go armed, any weapon prohibited by § 39-17-1302(a), not used solely for instructional, display or sanctioned ceremonial purposes, in or on the grounds of any public park, playground, civic center or other building facility, area or property owned, used or operated by any municipal, county or state government, or instrumentality thereof, for recreational purposes.
  22. But keep in mind that we are gun people and we look for it more than other people do. The average person walking around in the world has absolutely no idea what is going on around them in general, much less what other people are doing and I would venture a guess that the average person doesn't go around thinking, "hmm, I wonder who's wearing a gun?" If I had ever had a problem, especially in certain places where I'm basically certain that I would have been asked to leave if anyone thought I had a gun, I would agree, but seeing as how it's never been an issue, I just don't think people notice.
  23. The first 3 or 4 years, I used a Domke (spelling?) photo type vest because back then, that's about all I could find. Even when I wore that, I never had a problem, even at Wolfchase, even though I had been told numerous times that I would be asked to leave if I went to Wolfchase mall wearing a vest. Since then, I've worn plain black vests that I get from Smith and Alexander.
  24. I believe that to be mostly urban legend. I wear a vest all the time, and I carry my gun everywhere (and I mean EVERYWHERE. If I'm outside of my house, I wear a gun, period) and I've never run into a single problem. I've been carrying for over 15 years and always used a vest, so it's not something I started last week or anything. The only unwanted attention a vest has ever brought me is, when I go into Kroger, someone ALWAYS thinks I work there and asks me a question, and then they get mad when I don't know the answer.
