As far as caliber, I HIGHLY recommend the 260 Rem. It is a 308 necked down to 6.5mm. Even my recoil sensitive 5'2" wife likes shooting her Ruger compact in 260. Plus it's a FLAT shooting round making it a very capable 300 yard round for deer. However, rifles are a little hard to find in this caliber. I did buy a Savage Edge in 243 for my shy (read VERY recoil sensitive) Godson and it puts three rounds well under half an inch and I think I paid $250 new for the rifle and put a $50 scope on it. Hell, now I want it back..........

Ok...I was going to quote certain people and extole the virtues of why a sidearm is a neccessity........but I won't.......let me just say this, you have no idea of the "pucker factor" until you have cleared an Iraqi building at 3 AM and have to search the tight little closets with NOTHING but a pistol! In such instances, it is not a buckup weapon but a PRIMARY.....even if you carry a total of 4 weapon systems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like I said, the 1911 is not the bees knees, but it is a damned good platform, and if you keep it clean, it will work for you damned near as good, if not AS good as any system on the planet. And Pooley...........shut the F**K up, you don't have ANY basis to speak on ANY thing Marine Corps until you earn that Eagle Globe and Anchor....and then you are only a speak of dust on other's boots........Speak up only whe you have SEVERAL combat tours to lovely places like Iraq, Africa and Afghanistan.... Seals love their 226's.....I've WORKED with them. Force Recon loves their 1911's.....I've WORKED with them. SF loves their 1911's and G19's and several other pistols....I've WORKED with them......Delta loves their 1911's and anything else they chose to carry......I've WORKED with them!!!! My point in this is that every specialized unit has the descretion to choose pretty much what they want...........However, MOST of the operators who have that CHOICE chose a 1911............not necessarily because it is sexy, or cool, but because it WORKS, and works well!!! Yes it is true the 1911 requires more cleaning than some other pistols, but ask any Marine (The service of topic here) how much weapon's maintenance is bashed into their heads....... I KNOW again....because I have BEEN there!!! IDPA, etc is a game, so while it can provide a decent idea of a weapon's serviceablilty, nothing like the moon dust of Iraq or the mountains of the 'stan can fully villify or verify the ultimate success of a service pistol. And, to those of you who don't know, The Marine Corps is one of the most stringent services when it comes to testing a weapon before adopting it. Why do you think the Corps passed on the M4 in favor of the M16A4...........because they found out the damned M4 didn't work. Yes, they are beginning to adopt it, in limited numbers, but not until we let the Army and everyone else figure out that it didn't work, and until Colt started making them correctly!

Final thought, if someone could produce a 45 caliber Browning Highpower upper, with a singlestack non pivoting lower without a mag safety I would be in hog heaven and I would deam that the ultimate combat handgun. trigger

Your Remington Rand was shot out by that point in time and I wouldn't have wanted it either. However, I unfortunately have had to use the 9mm NATO round in combat and have been less than impressed. For civilian carry, I love the 9mm round, but in 9mm NATO loading, it is way too hot and doesn't have enough of that fabled "knock down power" that a 45 or even i believe a 40 would have in a military FMJ configuration.

I was referring to all polymer frame pistols, when I used the glock as a generic example. The 1911 is an archaic design, however it is well known and easy to shoot. Now, if someone would come up with a metal framed, single action, single stack 40 or 45 that had a low bore axis (lower than the sig 220) then I would be all over it. Smith almost had it with the 645, but it had too many problems.

I have an SR9, SR9c and an SR40. I love all of them. But, I think the 9c is an easier shooting gun than the fullsize gun. You chose wisely!

The one and only Taurus revolver I ever had was a great gun. I bought a used M85 a few years ago and it had a great trigger and shot like a dream, for a snub. Wish I still had it, but I loaned it to my mother-in-law and she ended up having it stolen out of her car. Many people derride Taurus, and it's true that they do put out a greater than average number of lemons, but they always fix or replace them. As to an even swap for a Glock, you might be a little on the shy side on this trade, but if you are cool wih it, as you say you are because he has been good to you, then by all means, be happy and shoot it often.

I actually have a hankerin to get one of the 325 Nightguards. Dunno why, and have no need for it, but I think it would be a cool revolver to have in the "armory"

Have you ever seen how hard Marines are on their gear. My last M9 that I was issued looked like it had been washed with a bunch of rocks and then trown down a hill. I love Glocks, I have carried a G19 for years, but I just really wonder how well a polymer pistol would hold up that well. Now, before all the nay sayers come out, I know very well that Austria and quite a few other countries issue the Glock, but the Marine Corps is the bastard stepchild when it comes to the armed forces, and generally has to "make do" with weapons that are WAY past their service life. Plus, a single stack 1911, or similar style 45 would be more "universal" amongst troops. A perfect example is my wife. She is 5'2". She is a medic in the Army, on her way to Iraq as we speak, and while she is a gun person, has a very difficult time finding a handgun that fits her hand. She has gone through Glocks, Sigs and a few others, but finally settled on, guess what, a fulll size 1911 as her civilian carry gun, because as she puts it "It fits my hand better than anything else, and I can hit whatever I'm aiming at...repeatedly!!"

I've been wanting one for awhile. I have an encore rifle and love it, but still want a pistol version too.

As a Marine Sniper, I wish they would look at this for general issue, or at least as a supplimental issue sidearm....

I believe putting a forward grip on it would make it an AOW

I have 2 GP-100's. One stainless 4" fixed sight DOA and one 4" blued adjustable sight one. They are hell for stout guns!! The one piece of advice I have is to pull the screw out of the cylinder release and apply some lock-tite to it because they like to back out under recoil. Other than that, you can't destroy them!!

I have a 45/70 Handi Rifle that I've used for deer down in Mississippi. Definately does the job. Fun little gun, and a damned good deal too.

I bought a WASR about two and a half years ago, and it has surprised me by how "accurate" it is. It runs with a variety of magazines and at 100 yards actually keeps a decent 3-4 inch group.

I've always kinda wanted a hi-cap 1911 like the 2011..............I'm weird I guess.

It looks great. But I'll have to bust Mark's balls about the picture. They have a 'dillo bushing wrench shown, but no bushing on the gun...........

I had a 213 many moons ago. It did what it was supposed to which was put bullets down range. It wasn't particularly accurate, and would only reliably feed ball ammo, but it was a fun little pistol. I regret getting rid of it now.

Also, I've put about a thousand rounds through my SR40 and it runs like a champ. Truly is the smoothest shooting 40 cal I've shot

I can easily put my SR40 in the blackhawk serpa made for the SR9. The slide is wider, but not too much.

Hey Joe, I like the Army too, hell my wife is in the Army, so I guess I have too...lol and as for me, because my dumbass didn't say in the original post USMC 1999-Present 0261, 0311, 0317, 0369, 8531, 8541 and 09something or other (whatever the hell my MOS is for CMC, can't remember right now, too much beer) and too damned many units to recall.
