  1. There us some sage advice and solid information in this post. Take heed of what Randy is saying here. At 65 years of age and in very particular circumstances I may well be viewed differently in my use of an impact tool. Be that's a definite maybe... the context of the particular circumstances, the evident nature of the events, disparity of force, my articulation of the event...many aspects come into play. I carry an impact tool for very specific circumstances and use. At this time in my life I could only envision that use being in a lethal force encounter where the access, if available, of another more effective tool is not an option. I am a civilian and an old geezer... I would probably be judged less harshly if I used a firearm in a lethal force encounter. I hope I never find out. Randy, CHL, and I also took one of the only classes (2 that I know of) that Craig Douglas (SouthNarc) ever taught called "Blackjacks & Saps". Craig's background is as a life long student of martial arts (not Do Jo based BS) and as an LEO with several years either undercover or "on top" running undercover narcotic agents. The focus of the class was on impact tool capabilities and the lethal force implications were clearly demonstrated and discussed. Their use cannot be taken lightly imho. Excellent post Randy!
  2. Bumping this thread back to life as there are so many incredible book recommendations. Thanks to @hipower I have been on a D.J.Molles trek for some time now. He's a really solid author with an entertaining and easily read style. Hipower , being a great guy, did a bit of "horse-trading" with me and I started with "The Remaining" series. https://www.amazon.com/Remaining-D-J-Molles-author/dp/0356503453/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0356503453&pd_rd_r=be47db81-f945-11e8-9ac6-bf091afce61c&pd_rd_w=sGN9q&pd_rd_wg=iRdzf&pf_rd_p=6725dbd6-9917-451d-beba-16af7874e407&pf_rd_r=PBPAG2P2B7ZSFJDA2V22&psc=1&refRID=PBPAG2P2B7ZSFJDA2V22 I've also read "Wolves" and the series "A Grower's War". I guess I am a bonifide D.J.Molles fan. I've also recently read Volume 10 of the A. American Going Home survivalist series "Home Coming". It's a bit formulaic but still entertaining. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0996696059/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Please don't let this thread die my friends. Share what you've been reading. It doesn't have to be "Survival" oriented you know.
  3. I actually picked up 2 of these from the Surefire website on the 26th. Surefire was selling them for $19.95 each. I didn't know I would like them so much or I would have purchased several.
  4. I'm not familiar with Double Dogs. Was this in Knoxville @Erik88 ? Disclaimer: I don't drink, but I don't fiddle with my damn gun either. Good grief... Do we know if this tool even had a permit? I did a quick search and didn't see this incident pop up. Maybe that's good as this would indeed be fodder for the anti-gun side.
  5. Great point. I have several kerosene lanterns and spare wicks set aside. We've used them after hurricanes in the past. They give off reliable, decent light but it's remarkable the amount of heat they generate. It's quite noticeable when the temp is 90+ degrees with matching humidity LOL. Having options is good though. Have you tried one of the ThorFire's? If so, what's your opinion of their functionality? Brightness, etc? And Thanks for the link.
  6. Well that works out pretty well. I have my library card laying out and planned to stop by Thursday to renew it. Thank you.
  7. This. I think my expectations were set too high for One Year After. Still I feel kinda obligated to complete the series...so maybe I'll throw it in my Prime basket.
  8. How is The Final Day Garufa? Thought about picking it up...
  9. Welcome to TGO and TN! I'm babysitting (safety officer) at the indoor range at ORSA as I type this. Beautiful day and everyone is shooting outdoors. I already did some rifle and handgun. PM me if you want to come out to ORSA (know you're a member). Meeting & greeting should land you a sponsor. Jamie
  10. Well I'm not exactly encouraging anyone to be a "prepper"... I thought it was interesting to see that even .gov and our Military recognize the EMP potential still exists and really haven't taken many, or any, steps to protect our infrastructure. At least to my knowledge. And...I like having lights inside when it's dark outside LOL
  11. While a low probability it's still a high impact event. My wife and I both read this article yesterday. We hadn't mentioned it to each other until we lost power last evening for a few hours. We just kind of looked at each other and said..".Hey, did you see that EMP article linked off of Drudge today?" Just food for thought. As I mentioned, very low probability. But it still makes me happy we've altered our lifestyles just a bit in so far as (and the term is becoming a bit antiquated) prepping has become a normal facet of our general way of life. I'm not talking a "bunker mentality", just making certain events would have less of a negative impact on our lives than would would have 15 years ago. btw...we recently picked up 2 more Streamlight Siege Lanterns. That brought us up to 4 of them. They are 540 lumen D cell battery operated little lanterns and are a far cry better than the older Coleman lanterns we used post-Katrina. Having light is kinda nice. Article: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/military-warns-emp-attack-could-wipe-out-america-democracy-world-order Streamlight Siege lanterns: https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-44931-Compact-Alkaline-Batteries/dp/B00DII7CTI One Second After... surely you've read it. Just in case... https://www.amazon.com/Second-After-John-Matherson-Novel/dp/0765356864/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1543742705&sr=1-1&keywords=one+second+after Jamie
  12. Thank you Legion. Sadly logic and rational thinking is sorely lacking among elected officials and the general populace...
  13. I received the below link from MidwayUSA this morning. It's a good value for Wise foods. It lists as 21 packets per bucket. I've tried Wise foods when they first came out (they used to send out samples). It's pretty darn good for LTS foods, but the servings usually seem small to most folks. I view them as strictly supplemental and only a portion of your food storage plan. $99.00 for a bucket this size is pretty decent pricing imho. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/725839/wise-company-160-serving-essential-preparedness-freeze-dried-food-kit?utm_source=hot-buy&utm_medium=email&utm_content=main-image-link&utm_campaign=wise-food Package Includes: Creamy Pasta and Vegetable Rotini (4 Total Servings) Savory Stroganoff (4 Total Servings) Cheesy Mac (4 Total Servings) Hearty Tortilla Soup (4 Total Servings) Pasta Alfredo (4 Total Servings) Chicken Flavored Noodle Soup (4 Total Servings) Southwest Beans & Rice (4 Total Servings) Teriyaki & Rice (8 Total Servings) Loaded Baked Potato (4 Total Servings) Rice Pilaf (16 Total Servings) Brown Sugar & Maple Multi-Grain (4 Total Servings) Powdered Eggs (24 Total Servings) Chocolate Pudding (8 Total Servings) Yogurt (8 Total Servings) Freeze Dried Strawberries (8 Total Servings) Freeze Dried Corn (8 Total Servings) Orange Delight Drink (16 Total Servings) Whey Milk Alternative (28 Total Servings)
  14. Sleep is highly overrated...apparently. I suffer the same malady so I'm glad to have company. I enjoy these posts GT. Thank you!
  15. Welcome aboard. Knoxville is a good area... growing as Bersa mentioned, but there's lots of good folks around here. I'm an ORSA member and jpx is 100% correct on his assessment of the range and members. The Action Pistol side is exceptionally good imho. The range north of Knoxville (Oliver Springs) is Windrock and it's run by a solid guy. Link: http://www.windrockshootingrange.com/ Conservative gun owners are always welcome @innocent bystander Jamie
  16. I am not LEO nor do I pretend to be so. I like a climate controlled work environment and the illusion of control over my day to day life. Working in an ER, I assure you it's an illusion... Several years ago (2006 as I just checked), operating under this condition in TN law, we hosted a Manadnock class using a local LEO trainer for certification. I've carried a variety of impact tools since (actually I carried them long before, but back in MS &LA). I keep a copy of the law, laminated, in my wallet...the issue has never arisen in any case. I take that you are a former, or current, LEO @ChanceMcCall . Therefore I assume you've been credentialed in impact tool use and application. You should be good to go. I have certs in OC/ Chemical agents (DTI and others) and carry OC, but the certs aren't required (to the best of my knowledge) in TN. Knives? again GTG. Knives are as ubiquitous as friggin' cell phones...almost Great advice and info in this thread by knowledgeable folks already. Welcome to TGO. Jamie
  17. If we didn't cast and PC bullets that $.14/rd is about the cost of quality handloads. That's a great price and the work is done for you LOL. This is definitely a time to "buy it cheap and stack it deep" as the saying goes. Tempting...
  18. @Shorty I've found the greatest benefit of something like MRE's is that if/when an event occurs that disrupts food supply or requires your time, energy, and immediate attention then minimal prep foods like MRE's frees you from more time consuming meal preps. My personal experience and first hand benefit has been post hurricane cleanup. But there are countless examples that can come from our Pre-incident Assessment Needs. Just my ever devaluing $.02 worth...
  19. No Sir. The last time I ordered some MRE's it was from MREDepot. https://www.mredepot.com/ The missus and I actually ate a couple of MRE's from 2005 last week. The still in surprisingly good shape. The water activated heaters had died, but after that length of time I'm not surprised.
  20. In the vein of Black Friday sales and in order to not clutter Black Friday listings for guns & ammo etc, I thought I'd post this in the Survival and Preparedness subsection. I received this link in an e-mail from The Ready Store. I've done business with them for several years now and have always been pleased with the products they carry. I've tried the Chicken & Rice (#10 can) and the pancake mix. While not exactly homemade, they are pretty darn good. We garden, freeze, can, dehydrate and store bulk purchase foods (repackage and seal in Mylar etc,) even have some MRE's on hand. These are simply additional options to consider for supplemental and emergency use. Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone has an interest or see the need. https://www.thereadystore.com/on-sale/sale-4?utm_campaign=20181113a+(H4Sxw9)&utm_medium=email&_ke=eyJrbF9lbWFpbCI6ICJqYWNrc29uLmphbWllQGdtYWlsLmNvbSIsICJrbF9jb21wYW55X2lkIjogIk1OS1lpeiJ9&utm_source=Sales+%26+Promotions+Subscribers+Tier+3
  21. Happy 242nd Marines!
  22. Welcome Gregory. I don't believe ORSA will allow 50 BMG... 'cause fudds... I'm a member and there's some great folks there, especially on the Action Pistol side of things. But I do believe Windrock Range in Oliver Springs will welcome you. But I don't believe Windrock has the land to really let you stretch your legs with your 50. Having your own piece of property would be ideal. Best of luck and glad to have you aboard.
  23. I am so sorry to hear about this Greg. My Sister had a cat she gave insulin injections to for several years. I believe that the 10 milliliter bottles of insulin contain 1000 units. So if the dose is 18 units per day that'd be 55 or so days worth. A quick Google search shows insulin to run about $275.00 for the 10 ml bottle. I didn't realize it was so expensive. Prayers out for you guys. Jamie sorry to crosspost Shorty.
  24. Excellent point peejman! I don't chamber the same round more than twice, 3 times at most, because of the potential of bullet setback or nose damage that potentially occurs when chambering. I just toss that/those round(s) in a ziplock back for later range use. As I shoot/practice/train with my Glocks or Shield that yields me about at least 100 rounds per year. I make it a habit to shoot empty my carry mag at least once a year to ensure fresh functional ammo in the mag. I also I use these "recycled" rounds to ensure POA = POI and reliable functioning in my carry guns. This is the primary reason I've purchased the 50 round boxes, and generally multiples in the same lot, in the past. Doubling the price, as with restricting the 50 round box sales is gonna hurt...
  25. I agree on concept Omega. But a free market (more or less) will drive this. The manufacturers are contractually bound to the Law Enforcement organizations, but from what I read see an opportunity to sell ammo to civilians (I do know cops are civilians LOL) at twice the price. I won't pay that and I do "roll my own" for carry time to time. My carry handloads are primarily wadcutters for my .38 spl handguns. I have some Gold Dot, XTP, and Golden Saber bullets I could load and may well consider that down the road. I have no issue with doing so for SD for the same reasons previously mentioned. @Gotthegoods I hadn't seen that article my friend. Heck that'll drive the buying market right there! I still have a couple of 50 rd boxes of Black Hills 124 gr +P I purchased as a 1000 lot back when they loaded using 124 gr Gold Dots. My RMR'd 17 loves 'em. @Ronald_55 Sorry buddy, got my shipping notice today.
