  1. My father has a model 52. It looks like the 39, but that's where the similarity ends! That gun will shoot!!!!!!!
  2. 1) A German Luger, dated 1940, Mauser MFG., 9mm 2) A pristine Smith and Wesson 39-2, 9mm. 3) A Rock Island Armory 1911 A-1 Commander, 45ACP. My two sons, ages 8 and 13, and myself all shot till our hearts were content. All guns quite accurate. They are quality firearms in good condition. The Rock Island by far being the least expensive. Here's what I learned: The Luger jammed several times with my youngest son shooting it, but was reliable when my oldest and when i shot it. The Smith and Wesson jammed every shot with my youngest son, and a couple of times when my oldest son shot. It was reliable for me. The Rock Island was the only one of the lot that was 100% reliable with all three of us. It was also the most accurate of the lot. I believe that the Luger and the Smith are sensitive to limp wristing. I further believe that the old adage "You get what you pay for" doesn't always hold true. We all three had a great time. I still prefer revolvers.
  3. Evan Williams black label is o.k., especially for the price. Heaven Hill is the nastiest available, and should not be on liquor store shelves.
  4. Makes me feel a bit better about my job.
  5. Thanks. I did carve it. I'm not all that great at it, but a piece of scrap makes for good practice. That design is over 100 years old, and I've yet to hear of a negligent discharge because of it. Were I concerned about it, however, I would suggest only buying holsters that cover the triggerguard. Not sure how familiar you are with a revolver, but it takes a pretty good tug on the trigger to discharge it. I can dig up many photos on the web of famous FBI agents, peace officers, Texas Rangers, etc. who carried a similar style as a duty holster.
  6. Now you're talking! My wife dosen't know that you can get "blue guns"; they are the polymer training guns you can also use for molds. So every now and then, I'll "need" to buy another handgun. Sell a few, and you can help fund the new gun. I just finished up one this evening. I found a gun I didn't have leather for, and I happened to find a piece of scrap big enough.
  7. There is a tool called a skiver that is used to thin leather. If you can't borrow one, and you only need it once, you may want to sand it. I'd advise you to wet it first.
  8. Liberal logic.....always funny!!!!
  9. UPDATE: I've field dressed 5 deer with it this season, and skinned and deboned three of them. I've only lightly touched it up on a stone a couple of times, and it'll still shave my arm. I am pleased with the quality of the steel. I'll probably order another one before winter's over and try some bone or stag handles, and perhaps some liners as well. I'd recommend the kit. I'd also like to see anything else you guys have been working on.
  10. I think I found your problem. Get a Weaver mount and rings, and a REAL scope and see what it'll do. I'll bet you'd be surprised. The only other thing I can think of is that I have seen a rifle barrel in the past someone had put in a vice and squeezed it hard enough that the bore in that spot was no longer round. It didn't shoot very good. I can't imagine, however, why someone would fell the need to do that to a single shot.
  11. When is the next Knoxville show? I'd drive that far for a decent show, although I don't care for Knoxville.
  12. Sure wish I was closer, as I would like to see and shoot the rifle in person.
  13. Yeah, I have an opinion. I went to their last Lebanon show, and I had about as may guns in my truck as there was at the show. I would really like my money, gas, and time refunded. I'll not go to another one.
  14. What kind of scope? Are the mount screws tight?
  15. My doctor told me to quit drinking. I thought "I know more old drunks than old doctors, so I went home and had a drink." Hope they cure you up in no time!
  16. Perhaps I'm just ignorant, but if one is attacked by a bear, how many rounds should he expect to get off before being mauled to the point of submission? I'd be surprised if I were able to get a handgun out of my holster and shoot at all. If six won't do it, I'm sure the end would be near.
  17. I'd watch the guns for sale section here, as well as ###.com. I've seen some good prices lately on used privately owned firearms since it's close to Christmas and money is tight. I can't give you any advice on the Glock.
  18. Here are my 44 mags. My preference of these to take on a bear hunt would be the Marlin! If you need to defend yourself against a bear, I believe a rifle is one's best bet. Do you mean you will be hunting with the 44, or just carrying it along?
  19. I'd recommend a pre lock Smith and Wesson model 29 or 629. Tough to find one for $600, but you won't need to add too much more for a serviceable one. A Ruger Super Blackhawk is a trustworthy gun that can be had for far less than your budget. I would personally avoid the Taurus.
  20. ...then you have to pee. The key to deer hunting, at least stand hunting, is to be still.
  21. Same here! I was much more pleased with mine than I'd have ever guessed.
  22. They were just in the way. They blocked roads, took up space in vacant buildings people could have used for other things, etc. I think it would be prudent for them to no longer exist. As I said in an earlier post, there are plenty of local agencies more than capable of handling such a situation.
  23. I can give a report after Christmas. My oldest boy is getting an Umerex/Walther/Colt M4 22lr for a present. It sure looks to be of good quality. So do the Smith and Wesson models. Mossberg makes a less expensive version.
