  1. Saw one Sunday on the Movie Channel called "Pontypool". Set in Canada, so you know it was a little off. Takes place entirely in a radio station. For the absolutely ridiculous premise on what makes the zombies, they played by the rules and I watched the whole thing.
  2. S&W got into it because Taurus is selling a ton of them. It's all about the money.
  3. Sixths. TCGD was also the cheapest I found. Just make sure the seller is an FFL. No one in the area wants to accept from a non-FFL. Can't say I blame them as one problem can take a lot of time to clear up.
  4. Maybe I answered my own question above with if there was one "best" OAL, everyone would use it. I started using factory ammo that cycled cleanly. Most reload data was close to that length. Then I found Remington which was a lot shorter. I wound up picking the longer length since I knew it fed well and was closer to the rest of the reloading data. I am working up from minimum load for several different powders. I could insert the bullet deeper without compressing the powder. I was just wondering if there was some rule of thumb based on caliber, bullet, type, etc. If not, I'll keep going this way as that seems to be the consensus. Rightwinger, by OAL I meant the tested load, not the SAAMI spec. That is the same across manuals. The test loads length vary quite a bit. I at first thought about loading to either the lands or just chamber, but I got different results when I measured across different pistols. I decided to pick something that fed in all of them and see how the loads work out across pistols. So far, I am within a few grains for each to cycle reliably. I load at the lightest that will cycle everything. Oh, and Lester, there is less Rainier data available now. I am using their bullets and a load manual from 2005, averaged with other information from other manuals.
  5. I am using published information. My question started because I measured different OALs from factory ammo. There are even differences in tested OALs between manuals. If there was one "best" OAL, I would think everyone would use it. I guess what I am asking is whether there is a minimum length that needs to be within the case in order to ensure consistent reloads.
  6. Is there a rule of thumb on how deep to set the bullet into a case? For example, a 9mm bullet is about 0.5" long, with about 0.25" straight sided before you get to the curvature. How deep should this be inset into the case? Factory rounds seem to be anywhere from a little less than 0.1" up to about 0.2". Maybe a percentage of the straight side? Does this apply to all bullet calibers?
  7. Depends on what you want to do with it. Without the original mag, you lose out on the originality. If you're just going to shoot it, I would go for a Chinese version as those had a chrome lined barrel. The Yugos are fine weapons, but unless you are collecting, the Chinese versions are cheaper.
  8. To me, kydex is better for IWB because it holds the shape. Once you get that adjusted, it won't change. My personal favorite is Kholster, but the others listed are also good.
  9. Ballistics played a part in my decision to get the 40. They also had the 45 for $20 more and the 9mm for $20 less. These are the new TS style stocks. They even had the old style (Planet of the Apes gun) for under $200. I figured the 45 would still be slow, even from a 16" barrel. Between the 9mm and 40, the 40 should pack a lot more punch. OK, so maybe I didn't plan on it being anything more than a plaything, I can't wait to get out and shoot it again. I wonder what it would do at 100 yards?
  10. I held off posting this becasue I didn't want to get shunned. I picked up a Hi Point carbine last week. I don't know why, but I couldn't stop myself. I liked the looks, in a weird retro mall tactical 70's futuristic apocalypse movie sort of way. I even got a cheap laser for it. I took it to the range and had a blast. I only put 80 rounds through it, but couldn't stop smiling. Recoil is almost non-existent, cycling is flawless. The only complaint is the 10 round mag. After sighting in the iron sights, I was hitting 2" groups at 50 yards. And for the price, I would do it again.
  11. Looks nice. I have wanted one of these for some time. Finding a good deal before someone else gets it has been my problem. Does this carry better in the front or back pocket in terms of printing?
  12. I think it depends on your local environment. In many places out west, OC is much more common than here. There, people are more used to seeinhg people carrying guns, and therefore less likely to freak. It's just not that way here. I think if people really want to make a change where OC is not common, it should be a mass effort. If everyone from Knoxville or Nashville or wherever with an HCP picked a day to OC, it might go over better. Sort of like people who were meeting at Starbucks. When sheeple see other people who look "normal" carrying, it might start turning their minds to think that not everyone with a gun is a nut or a criminal. I just don't see one or two people every once in awhile OCing making a real change in perception.
  13. In that case, try Thinsulate gloves. I think you can get them from JCPenney. They are really thin, but in all honesty, I don't think they keep you all that warm. They are also a little slick. Personally, I would stick with the Mechanix gloves. They will give you some warmth and you can pick a style to work for you.
  14. OK, I need some help from you guys. How do I rationally tell the wife I need to get a hog and bear pistol? We off road Jeeps, and have seen three bears (one single and then a mama and her cub). Both times they were ahead on the trail and we just left them alone. They hardly even looked at us. Never seen any hogs, but they can usually hear us coming, so maybe that's why they stay away. So, 44 mag revolver?
  15. My wife has problems with her hands, so she got a pair of PAST recoil protection gloves. Maybe not what you were looking for since they do not have finger tips. They are thin and padded in the palm with a thick nylon mesh on the back. I tried them and they felt pretty good. I think they were only $20. Another throught is to use Mechanix work gloves. There are a huge number of types, so you can find something you like. They are also $20, but on sale for $15 or so all the time.
  16. I had a very good experience at Shooters Depot. I was looking for a holster foir an FNP-45. Other than Bladetech, no one else makes one. I was not ready to spend that much, and had heard holsters for the HK full size might work. Chris tried every full size holster they had (which was 5-6) to see what would work. Nothing did. I wound up making a deal on another purchase, and as part of the deal Chris said he would look for another holster for the FNP-45. He could not find anything after a couple weeks, so refunded our agreed difference. I cannot say how pleased I was, not only in the service, but in the followup. And the thing is, I live three hours away. They knew this and still treated me very well. I don't get to Chattanooga often, but I will go to Shooters Depot whenever I do.
  17. Good choice. I carried an SR9c until my wife took it. The CW40 was a little too strong for her. The Ruger has been nothing but reliable no matter the ammo.
  18. If it has foam padding, you might be able to gain a little interior room by going to thinner foam, or even an adhesive felt. If the metal frame is too thin, then I don't know. I guess you could try to pound out the area where the laser would sit, but it might be better to take the laser off if you are goinhg to have the gun in the case.
  19. Welcome. I also work at a nuclear facility, only I am in the lab. I also have an SR9c, which I really like.
  20. I have a coworker who is planning to take the permit class to learn more about handling a handgun and the laws associated with carrying. He has no intention of carrying.
  21. Those were final bid prices. Most starting bids were reasonable, or at least about what I would expect they were worth. Then the bidding took over and people went crazy.
  22. I went to an estate auction yesterday. They had several guns listed. All were used and complete. I was looking at a couple, but when the bidding started, I think they went way high. Springfield 9mm subcompact for 650 H&K 45 tactical with red laser for 950 Ruger 357 Security six for 400 Colt 223 AR-15 with red dot for 1550 Is this still due to the Obama scare? One guy was asking about whether they had to register what they bought. Apparently he didn't remember giving his name, address, phone number and driver's license number to get his bid number. Several guns didn't get picked up when the high bidder would not sign a form stating they were a TN resident and not a felon. What are these people thinking?
  23. OK, try hiking your pants up a bit and tighten your belt one notch. That should pull the grip in closer to your body. You might also try moving the carry location closer to the 4:30-5:00 position. What holster are you using? I have had great luck with the Kholster, and others like the Crossbreed a lot. You can adjust the cant on them to rotate the grip up more, which also effectively shortens it.
  24. 357 and a couple speed loaders. The 45 is not a bad choice either. If they seem equal to you, carry the one that is the most comfortable.
  25. I have a 45 USG. It is extremely accurate and shoots soft. I think it is big for a carry, but great for a shooter. I also had a 9, which is a sweet pistol.
