Fitty%'s Army Stories: A.I.T. part-1 (trailer)

I was not Aircrew but did have more than my fair share of riding in the back and minimal stick time, I was a maintainer not a flyer. The only time I actually worried about crashing, I caught a ride on a 46 leaving the HMCS Vancouver trying to get back to my home ship, the USS Carl Vinson. We were dodging a typhoon in the South China Sea and the 46 started having issues. I wasn't on ICS so I didn't hear what was going on. But the crewman all of a sudden started running back and forth, removing panels, grabbing tools, etc. I knew we were on the high side of their flight leg before bingo fuel and the winds were not helping. It was a long tense flight home. LOL

Yeah, what makes the Army different from Navy & Airforce is that the maintainers are the crew chiefs.

I retired in 05. The Navy has restructured the helo community since then, but back then we had HS (carrier helo squadrons with 60 F and H), HSL (small boy, aka surface ship helos squadrons with 60B) and HC (supply ship helos with 46's) The 46 crewman were crew chief and maintainers. Since I retired the have done away with that command structure and I haven't cared enough to learn what they did. My DD-214 and retirement cert that came in the mail on 7 Dec 16 which was with the orders stating I was transferred to the retired list on 1 July 05.
