Good job, Memphis! You made it into the FBI's Top 5.

Probably because so many TGOers act like they live in utopia, when in fact the crime rates in most Memphis communities are quite average for the state. Many on TGO act like Memphis is Somalia and quite frankly, for those of us who live here and spent our lives living in many other places, it's actually comical seeing all the fear-based posts.

So much for the internet tough-guys, I guess.

Take a chill pill. It's called humor. Something Memphians apparently don't have from living in Mogadishu.

I've assumed it was in the top 5 for the last 50 years. Always had the reputation, but having only been there

a handful of times in my life, I wouldn't know. There are parts of Clarksville that are pretty bad and shouldn't be

wandered through after dark.

Damn! This was a post about a statistic reported by someone. Where's all that fear based crap by the internet

tough guys? Derail another one.

I lived in a good area of Memphis (in Parkway Village when it was still a "good neighborhood" and Germantown Extended and Winchester-when the Hickory Ridge area was still a "good neighborhood") for 7 years. My wife lived in Bartlett for 11 years. I had cars vandalized, was burglarized, had a kid light a fire in my yard (and told me he would sue me if I touched him while I was putting it out) and my wife was attacked twice, once at knifepoint. Who knows what would have happened if the police had not come by when they did.

I constantly felt and saw the racial tension that permeates the city (that is not felt in other parts of the state).

But it really isn't that bad…

Memphis is like most other big cities with crime problems. I try to avoid big cities when possible, so that is why I live in a town outside Memphis. If I could, I'd live far away from any big cities in the hills somewhere.

Yes, the racial problems are the worst of any place I have ever lived. It is like stepping back in time 50-60 years. The place can never move forward from all the race stuff of the 60's has been my impression. It is strange and backward.

It could be a lot worse. In 1991, DC had a whopping 481 homicides with a population slightly smaller than Memphis. I was living up there at the time and knew what areas to stay out of, and what lifestyle choices to avoid. Probably just like Memphis. The problem is with so much crime, there is always the potential for spill-over.

Of all the homicides last year in Memphis I'd be curious how many we're random. I'm betting the majority of the murders were gang on gang with domestic related homicides taking up the rest.

If the homicide number is related to a lifestyle then it would seem the law abiding folk are alright.
